World titles on the line for Mayweather-Maidana II

Post by Pigeons »

Floyd Mayweather stated that he was only defending the WBC/WBA WELTERWEIGHT titles in the rematch, contrary to what was publicized in the build up to the fight.

WBC prez confirmed this in another article.

There's much more important things in the grand scheme of life, but can anyone help me figure out which titles were on the line for Mayweather-Maidana II?

Initially it was believed the WBA/WBC welterweight and WBC light middleweight titles were on the line.

This was disputed by Mayweather and (seemingly) WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman a week before the fight. I posted those links in my original post in this thread.

As well all saw during the fight on SHO PPV's broadcast, the banner at the bottom of the screen billed the fight being for the "Welterweight & Junior Middleweight Titles". And after winning the fight, Mayweather sported 2 green belts and one black belt (WBC welterweight and light middleweight + WBA welterweight?).

Then several days after the fight, the same website that initially reported that Mayweather intended to only defend his WW belts, quoted Mayweather as saying all 4 of his belts were on the line in the Maidana II fight.

BT: There's also been some rumors regarding Leonard Ellerbe and Mayweather Promotions...

FM: (Cutting in) Leonard, I think we're just getting to a point where we're outgrowing each other. I think I just see things my way and I think he sees things in another way. For example, this time around when I went out and fought, my WBC and WBA titles in both weight classes were on the line and I didn't approve of that at all. That's something I didn't approve of.
This is the first time I even heard of the possibility of the WBA 154 title being on the line as well.

This is the first time I have ever experienced so much confusion regarding what titles were on the line.

Is there anyway to find a definitive answer?

According to the WBC's October 2014 ratings, Mayweather defended both the 154 and 147 belts on September 13, 2014 vs. Maidana. Will you please update this on the main page?

Regarding the WBA belts, it appears only the WBA 147 was on the line as their Results page only lists the WBA 147 title.

This should put this issue to rest.
