superfeather curse

Post by littlepug »

Anyone remember the superfeather curse that hung over the British title in the early 90s ? can remember lads winning it but seemed like ages before anyone made a successful defence of the title, can recall John Docherty being involved in this merrygoround does anyone remember any of the other holders of that time ?

take a look at my user name :P
pat and john fought for the vacant title the strange thing is john's real name is pat but as my brother was already fighting under that name he used his middle name instead it was in the guinness book of record a long time ago as the only time to guys with the same name fought for a major title .

yeah great night that was at the york hall vs mo hussein , pat wasn't even a light weight but he got the chance so moved up for the fight he got a little bit of luck as mo got a cut and it was stopped but that had happened to pat a few times so i guess he was due a bit of luck himself . he defened against dajib daho who he beat the year before in a real hard fight , it was the chief support to mcgugain vs jim mcdonell and was another great fight with pat in the lead after decking daho only for daho to rally back and stop pat on a cut , speaking with pat later he said all he only ever wanted was to win a title british/commonwealth or european and once he had a bit fire left him and that daho wanted the second fight more than him at that time .

a little he didn't become a trainer but he would still train himself a bit and go to shows ,he actually took me training with him when i was 21 and that was pretty cool training with some decent pros before i'd had an amateur fight. now he goes to a few queensbury shows and i think he's even reffed a few fights . he's a fireman now and short fat bastard as well that would struggle to make cruiser weight now :P

there was some nice boxers then at the weight like robert dickie and cowdell and to be honest pat was better vs brawlers than boxers and he could be outboxed but few could out fight him.

he went through a few rocky moments after he retired got divorced started to use bouncers as punching practice but he's never been a drinker and is quite settled now , some of the guys he fought had some bad luck daho died in a car accident and mo hussien killed a guy with a punch if i remember right the strangest one was paul huggins who was a complete nutter in and out of nick all the time then found god and is now a pastor of a church in hastings there's a great clip of him on youtube talking about it he's very blunt in it personly i skipped the first 10 minutes that's all about god to where huggins talks about his boxing and life of crime .

did you ever put the gloves on yourself or just a fan mate

I used to follow a guy called Floyd Havard who looked very, very decent for a while and actually got a crack at John John Molina for the world title. Seem to remember that Floyd had a lot of tools at his disposal and was a very tidy domestic level boss. When I looked back at his record on Boxrec it made for reasonably impressive reading as well.

@littlepug....thanks for the update and the explanation.

Can certainly recall Floyd being mentioned a great deal at the time and fairly sure I watched some of his fights (well past my bedtime) as a kid on ITV's Central Sports which was a great boxing outlet.

They had their favourite fighters on Central back then like Wally Swift Jr who seemed to be always boxing Andy Till and some great fights from overseas with the Hiltons etc. What a great, VIP service Gary Newbon gave Midlands boxing fans!!!

In my head, Jon Davison fought Fabrice Benichou about twenty times & that Thai lad a dozen, & faced no-one else at all throughout his entire career.

I realised he'd lost to Steve Robinson the other day, fair shattered my memories of the 90s that did. & I actually watched that fight live, come to think of it.

Also on-topic: fvcking loved the merry-go-round at super-feather for the British title.

However, my memories are slightly tainted by the distasteful revelation that if only they'd all been born about five years later then they could all have fought for some bullshit InterGalacticPentaCostalContinental title instead, & if born five years after that then there'd be like three ex-"world" champions amongst their number.

........................

@littlepug.....long time ago, but it was usually midweek and just after the 10.30 local news. My parents were cool about it during the holidays but tried to enforce a curfew during school term....how are you going to pass your exams if you are watching all these boxing and football programmes in the middle of the night??

Heaps of good fights back then and from the UK, Asia, Australia, Canada, Europe and the US. I think Gary Newbon had a hell of alot to do with it...he was a boxing nut and also head of Central Sports as well, so he spent a big old chunk of the budget on stuff he wanted to watch himself which was footie and boxing!!

I can remember seeing Bobby Czyz at LHW, Troy Dorsey, most of the Hiltons, some early Lalonde fights and as mentioned previously a whole pile of Swift-Till. Also some early Fenech as well.

They also showed guys like Jorge Paez and some Asian fighters I've now forgotten.

Jim Watt and Gutteridge would have got the biggest Air Miles accounts in history if the scheme had been around then.....they were often at the fights, rather than just commentating from a studio back in the UK. As I said, amazing service from your local ITV station!
