Neither Weaver or Cooney were in Holmes' class, but they both gave him tough fights; tougher than he usually had.
Cooney vs Weaver is very unpredictable. At times Weaver looked pretty good; at times awful, and that could be in the same fight.
The problem with Cooney is that there is so little to go on. Holmes is the only fight where he fought a credible opponent when he himself was at his best.
How much do the crushing ko's over washed up fighters mean? How much does his crushing losses to old Foreman and Spinks mean? They have to count for something, but how much?

Weaver was one of the few Heavyweights from the 80's to get the most out of his abilities. He was pretty limited but did what he coukd with what he had & had a decent career.
I was shocked when I saw Holmes / Cooney a few years ago at his well Gerry fought. I'd seen him against Spinks & Foreman so I didn't have much regard for his abilities. He fought a good fight.
Cooney probably jumps on Weaver & gets him out inside 2. Weaver wasn't going to make him miss & take him into the later rounds. His only chance would be to land a big shot. Cooney hadn't tasted losing yet so I think he wins this.

Pretty much my thoughts as well. For all his strengths, Mike Weaver sometimes started off slow and that's not a good thing against a quick starting puncher. In addition, Gerry had a significant size advantage in both height and weight. I would never completely count out a man with the fighting heart of Mike Weaver, but on the surface this doesn't bode well for Mike in my eyes.wvboxer wrote:Weaver was one of the few Heavyweights from the 80's to get the most out of his abilities. Cooney's fight with Spinks really sucked, however IMOP Cooney's fight with Big George Foreman was pretty good(while it lasted anyway).wvboxer wrote:
