Great question. Wimpy was nuts - they did a KO feature on him years ago.

I always quite liked Buck Smith and he actually scored some world class wins.

Check his record. Some legendary other journeyman including Reegie Strickland, Rob Calloway, Rocky Berg.

But he ko'd Kirkland Laing and Robert Wangila

it's tough it pick just one, but I like these guys:

Travis Walker
Darnell 'the ding-a-ling man :OhYes: ' Wilson
Kevin Johnson- I might catch a little flak for this choice, but whatever. I like is ultimate lazy man style.
Max Maxwell
Emanuel Augustus- He was revered when he used to fight on ESPN & is probably the most popular journeyman with fans.

Sugar Gibiliru.....got matched remoselessly hard throughout his 55 fight career and against a procession of British, Commonwealth, European champs and world title contenders. Ross Hale, Pat Barett x 2, Floyd Harvard x 2, Mark Reefer, Andy Holligan, Mike Ayers and a whole load more. Shook up the scene by unexpectedly beating Robert Dickie to win the British SF title and there is a draw in there with Pat Barett as well. Final record W16, D7, L32.

Maybe Jesse Feliciano. I realize that he did fight for a world title, but he was still really just a journeyman with a few really good wins. I loved his heart and his all-action style, and he seemed like a really cool guy in his interviews.

Jesse Burnett

Though he's a journeyman by record only. Far outside of the league of an Augustus in talent, but terribly mismanaged.

I hate that bastard (smiley face - which I can't do anymore)

Laing one of my favourite fighters & that one hurt. Saying that, it was typical Laing to get kaoyed when he was rising up the rankings.

Back to the subject, does Steve Robinson count? Are you a journeyman if you win, and defend, a title? Comes in on 24 hours notice as a 13-9-1 fighter, beats the favourite in his hometown & then makes SEVEN defences - four of which were against British fighters who would have been favourites over him. Then a certain boxing promoter stitched him right up and cheated him out of a well deserved big payday by getting Naz made mandatory after some contract & ratings shenanigans.

Saoul Mamby is another. Had six losses before 1975 and was still beating undefeated prospects in the 1990's*

* - ok I am stretching things a bit there....

@Taansend: I think you can rise out of journeyman beginnings to win a title yes & then sink back into it. It's more a description of momentum & what you're undergoing than a nomenclature that clings to you forever, imo.

Steve Robinson was definitely a journeyman, won a title, then went back to being one at the end. James J. Braddock, for a more famous & accomplished example.

I fvcking loved Emanuel Augustus (keep fighting mush, please keep fighting), but Freddie Pendleton (similar trajectory to Robinson but a much better fighter, matched much much much much harder) will always be my favourite.

Fearless Freddie fvcking rocked.
