Does Lee Selby beat Walters?

Post by WelshJack »

As impressive as Walters was I found him to be very basic and relied on his power, which made me think Lee Selby could beat him. I want to see who agrees or if i'm biased.

Selby would be knocked unconscious within 4 rounds. A total and utter mismatch

I posted this in the thread where you said that Selby would beat Walters, Lomachenko, Gonzalez, Mares, and Rigo:

While Selby could possibly beat Walters you're sounding an awful lot like you did for Kovalev-Clev, even down to the 'come back when' bit. I know one should adress the content of an argument and not its source, but I suspect that your lofty and confident predictions have something to do with factors other than how good the boxers are and how their styles mesh.

Walters is fairly basic, but his jab is good, he's tenacious, and he's quite a good puncher even when not optimally positioned. Selby tends to lay back and be overly passive, and I could easily see Walters putting him into a shell and gradually busting him up. Selby is a skillful fighter who has impressed me thus far, but he needs to show me that he can win impressively at a higher level before I pick him over Walters, let alone every fighter in the division.

I find it hard to gauge Selby because upto now he's been matched with guys that are very limited. Tend to be come forward fighters with average power who dont hit hard enough to possibly knock him out and at the same time arent skilled enough to outbox him. I wouldnt completely classify Walters as a come forward fighter either. He's aggressive but there tends to be a decent amount of intelligence with it which I like.

Selby would really struggle with Walters pressure and power.

Walters wins by stoppage.

I'm a big Selby fan but this wouldn't end well for him.. Did someone really say he would be Lomochenko ha.. Selby will be pushed to the easier fight. Will be world champion and swiftly move to super feather.. No chance against Loma or Walters

Walters would put Selby to sleep early, absolutely no question.

This would go similar to GGG vs Geal. Selby running through few rounds. Then waking up with massive head ache.

Selby seems quite capable of outboxing Walters but I'm not sure he could avoid getting caught for twelve rounds.
A likely outcome would be Selby getting stopped late in a fight he was winning by a wide margin.
But if Selby can stay disciplined for twelve rounds who knows?

Genuine question, but what's the evidence for suggesting he could outbox Walters so comprehensively given the likes of Donnaire haven't been able to?

I'd agree with all of the above. Of the title holders I can only see Selby beating Gradovich (and that's no certainty), he's got an outside shot against Walters, but that's all it is. The style matchup isn't all bad as Walters would come to him but I don't think he's got the power to keep Walters off and he'd be massively out-strengthed.

It's difficult to know how good Selby is. This potential match up reminds me of Porter vs Brook. I'd make Walters favourite but it wouldn't shock me if Selby beat him.

Crikey. Levels, lads. Walters just banjoed a dude who's been p4p top 10 for the last 5 years.

selby banjoed brit level guys and Aussie bantams.

only one way i could rationally put my money, there. Emphasis on rationally.

Also, Selby rarely banjos and more often than not labours to a points win over said opposition.

Selby really struggled against Simion & Walsh, he's wide open defensively & levels below Walters. Surprised the poll isn't 100% for Selby getting schooled/ko'd.

Donnaire and Darcynian are both natural bantamweights whose best days are long behind them, and Walters didn't outbox them, he pressured them and used his strength and power to blow them out.
Selby on the other hand will have a height and reach advantage and has also got pretty quick hands.
I just think that with the right game plan he can outbox Walters for a period. Though, as I said in my post, Im not convinced he could win as Walters would land something big, sooner or later.
It's a moot point anyway, Hearn won't throw him in that deep when he has a much more winnable fight on the horizon.

Thanks for the response - was just genuinely curious as I haven't seen Walters fight yet.

People need to stop getting carried away.
Donaire was a world class Bantam, a very good super bantam and an average feather.
Looking at Walters record, he's not fought anybody where i'd say wow, you're world class just yet.
Neither has Selby and yes has fought a lower level than walters no doubt. Selby hasn't had his chin tested so all these people saying he would be KO'd early have no idea as we dont know what he can and cant take.

He's beaten Donaire and Darchinyan who admittedly were better as flyweights but they're still leagues above anyone Selby has faced.

"Not fought anyone that says you're world class" - who exactly does one need to beat in the featherweight division to be deemed world class?

At the moment it's a weak division; Donaire was right up there with the current best featherweights IMO.

Marvin Sonsona is the joker of the division; if he pulls it together he could be a real threat. Great talent.

After Walters just KO'd Donaire, I'd say, that his confidence will go up another 25%. I'd seriously doubt Selby over Donaire to be fair.

Selby hasn't got the power to keep off the big punchers. The pitter-patter combinations won't work at the top level without the power. Things are going to get real, soon enough for him.

Walters would have Selby going backwards and under serious pressure if he managed to get to the halfway stage, before the stoppage ultimately comes. Walter KO inside 8, earlier if Selby wanted to make a fight of it. A different level to any that Lee has fought at yet as a pro.

I agree with you in parts I thought Cleverly would have enough if he stuck to a gameplan of boxing (which he didn't) and nobody knew how good Kovalev actually was/could be. I think Walters is just too basic that Selby would do a Brook v Porter job on him.
