He's looking very good so far, but there's tests to come.

Cotto, as shopworn as he is, would be by far the biggest scalp to date, and Floyd already handled a younger version of Cotto with relative ease.

Rating GGG above Mayweather is ludicrous, when you compare their careers.

That's the problem it's all because of the name. Mayweather could beat a five years past his best Pacquiao and that name would look great on his resume still whereas Golovkin could beat someone with a lesser reputation but at his peak and in terms of merit both wins could be just as equal. Nothing is an exact science in boxing.

ikorolev is right, if you base it on who beats who if they were same size and weight then Golovkin is number one P4P for me but if you judge it on resume then Mayweather is number one. That pretty much sums up why this P4P stuff is largely rubbish.
The whole bloody point of P4P is that you judge them as if they were men of equal stature, it's about skills, resume and achievement, not 'who would beat who.'

So you think that if Mayweather was weighing around 170+ on fightnight that GGG would beat him!? I don't.

it has always been about who beat who. you think years ago people had floyd at #1 because he beat oscar or marquez. no they had him at #1 because he looked like the boxer nobody could beat. so down the line what realy matter, can boxer a beat boxer b c d e.....etc

all the p4p kings were considered the best, considered the boxer nobody could beat.

no matter if it was prime jones, prime mosley, prime trinidad, prime pacquiao, when they were #1 p4p, people would say "nobody regardless of weight classes beats this guy right now!" thats p4p!!!

Oh yea because Maidana isn't a better fighter at his class
than Marco Rubio or Dan Geale or anything.

GGG takes down maidana inside 5 rounds

He hasn't even been tested by any of these journeymen he has faced, lol at today's so called boxing fans.

geale beat sturm and mundine

curtis is ko powerhouse

macklin is tough and considered one of the best md

proksza knocked champion sylvester out in 3 rounds

i mean they arent big as names as cotto or martinez, but they are far from average joe

Basically, there are that many people who dislike Floyd Mayweather Jr., that they could have substituted Golovkin’s name with a cab driver like Dashon Johnson… and expect the very same results.

Therefore, this poll is meaningless.

Most polls are meaningless unless they indicate the result of some referendum or other so I'd tend to agree with you in that respect.

the fans voice is never meaningless

and some time ago polls about who is #1 boxer, who always floyd leading the poll and weeks ago there were the same amount of floyd dislikers than now.

people just changed their minds, because one barely beats a guy and holds and crabs for life and than wins by MD and the other makes boxing look like a walk in the park and finishes always with a KO.

and dont come with oppostiion, macklin is as good of a boxer as guerrero and floyd needed 12 boring rounds for guerraro and ggg wrecked mack inside 8

If only there were a Maidana to scrape past or a Bika to clinch with at 160. By the time he wins a superfight he'll probably be on the slide with a new kid on the up & you'll forever be behind the times because you can't recognise boxing genius unless its on display against another great. But 2 prime greats is a rarity, especially now.
I see that you think Maidana and Bika are the best opponents Mayweather and Ward have defeated. You must be a very informed boxing pundit.
Or maybe it's because the Floyd that slapped around Gatti doesn't exist anymore. The Ward that neutralised Froch doesn't box anymore, and the Pacquiao that bludgeoned Cotto doesn't exist anymore.

Who was better p4p in 2000, Floyd or Barerra?

P4p is alot simpler than you realise, it's simply who is currently the best, not some points system based upon legacy wins, that's ludicrous. Golovkin is in a league of his own.

That is the part some people really don't get. Having top names on your record from five years ago doesn't make you the best NOW.

Floyd is NOT P4P the best fighter on the planet NOW, 2014.

The other part that some people really don't get is the fact that pfp status is very simply an opinion of who is best.

Boxing fans have proven to be pretty stupid regularly, especially on this forum. Doesn't surprise me one bit they'd rank someone who hasn't even come close to beating a top fighter in boxing over the best fighter in the past 30 + years who's beat a who's who of opponents. lol

Floyds worst opponent in the past 6 years (Victor Ortiz) is better than anyone GGG has stepped in the ring with as a pro.

 I see what you did there, Floyd has been at the top since he was 7 years old, that is really quite something. TBE.

Why would you call the poll meaningless. There are about 186 comments already written. If you call those post's or polls meaningless then the post and polls on Box Rec must be meaningless because YOU don't like the outcome, SO FAR.

The title of that poll should clearly "who fans prefer watching" hence why GGG is coming out on top.

LOL couldnt have anything to do with the fact that Maidana is a welterweight and Golovkin is a middleweight.

Some of the Golovkin fans seem to be coming to the conclusion that Golovkin is better based on the fact he knocks guys out in quick fashion. Just because you're beating a guy in that kind of fashion versus outboxing him on points doesnt automatically determine that the knockout artist is better...

What even though maidana has never been knocked out? Cmon, not saying Golovkin wouldnt knock him out but that is purely conjecture at this point.

Gaele had never been stopped either, so it was conjecture by the bookies when he was favoured to stop him inside 3 rounds.

That's all these GGG fans can base their claims on, their opinions. It's hard to take them that serious when GGG has done nothing as a pro up to this point to prove any of their claims to even been remotely accurate. I think GGG is a wonderful fighter to watch and shows to have the goods, but there's really no substance when it comes to calling him the best fighter in the world considering the weak opposition he's faced up to this point.

Rubio wasn't even knocked down by Pavlik, JCCJ, Lemieux or anybody else in the last 10 years, but Golovkin KO'ed him in 4 minutes.

Both statements in bold are extremes. GGG may be the best fighter in the world, but he needs to beat Ward to prove that. Based on what he has already done and HOW he has done it, he is definitely in top 10 p4p. I would say that he is somewhere between 3rd and 7th positions.

Roach and DLH will do their best to keep Cotto and Canelo away from GGG. I expect that Roach will suceed. Not sure if DLH will be able to hold Canelo from fighting GGG if Saul beats Cotto. In any case, I don't expect any serious challenge from Canelo.

Ward is a key to greatness for GGG.
