William Fernando Souza Bezerra - Brazilian Cruiserweight

Post by Gnome »

Is this guy legit? He has a 38(37)-0 record, ranked 18th in Boxrec's Cruiserweight list, but he seems to fight exclusively in Brazil against (I am assuming) local opponents. He appears to fight the same boxers over and over again (he has fought one Ricardo Augusto Souza four times, knocking him each time in a total of eight rounds and a Ernesto Carnesse Gonzalez three times).

Anyone know of him? Is he the real deal? It seems a bit dodgy to me.

His record may be real, but he isn't a legit contender. A lot of Brazilians have these type of built up records against domestic competition, but rarely succeed when traveling (ie. Raphael Zumbano Love has a similar looking record domestically, but loses whenever he travels).
Here's a vid of him knocking over some fat guy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YmZtvU9rQA
He has something Raymi-like to his style- coming forward with his hands low and chin high, winging bodyshots. But we don't hear of his world title aspirations the same way we do with the uranium-powered Yemeni. Maybe he just intends to stay in Brazil and be a club fighter, but is slowly working his way onto the computerized rankings. It's a little impressive that his team has found so many opponents in Brazil with decent W-L records that he can beat.

Thanks, chucktaylor. It's a hell of a record, and as you mention some of his opponents W-L ratios are pretty decent. It appears he needs to sort out whether he is ambitious on the world level, as you point out.
