Amateur Boxer Beats Referee

Post by Lenny Cravats »

I was going to post this in the am section, but I'm not sure anyone has posted there this year.

Crazy stuff. Peculiar decision from the ref, he probably did deserve a smack about the back of the head but this fella got himself a lifetime ban.

Don't know if the decision was all that peculiar considering it was an amateur contest, where stoppages are often enacted in that manner.
Aghast that you would believe the referee deserved to be assaulted. It's not the WWE , you know.
Interesting that the boxer didn't react immediately to the stoppage but instead went calmly back to his corner. The sucker punch came out of the blue.
Shades of the notorious Harlem Hammer, James Butler. Both deserved to be arrested. Hopefully, the kid will serve a long stretch behind bars.

The ref's decision looks poor on the videos that have been widely circulated, but I've read that in the round of the stoppage Loncar was dropped and given two standing counts. I haven't seen many amateur bouts recently, but when I watched them regularly it would be rare for a boxer to be allowed to continue after getting dropped and getting a count in the same round.

The boxer's coaches have been banned for life too, though I think that's harsh if it's simply because they reacted slowly.

Unless the fighter's corner told him to attack the referee, I don't see why they should be punished.

Personally I find corrupt boxing officials destroying the dreams and earning potential of kids or young pros with no other career prospects worse than a smack in the mouth.

Was anyone else shocked, that the man who had just won a fight with him, instantly ran out of the ring when it got ugly.

It's difficult to tell in the one full video I've seen because the picture is really sped up, but it looks like a bad stoppage. The knockdown appears to be a flash knockdown, and both standing 8 counts appear to be quick.

With that being said, there is obviously no excuse for what the boxer did and the lifetime ban is more than appropriate. I'm a little confused as to why his coaches are also banned though--it isn't their fault.

This is boxing, where the victorious fighter spends sometimes as much as 36 minutes fleeing from the loser who is supposedly inferior at fighting and less of a man. It is a very logical system without flaws.

I can't blame him really. If he had jumped in and joined the brawl, he may have been suspended or banned as well. He shouldn't have been, but AIBA is goofy.

He obviously wanted no part in fighting that guy anymore lol.

Shame though cause it looked like the ref helped him out, but he wasn't going to return the favor :box:

I can't believe the justifications on here . . . you never sucker punch an old man, I don't care what poor decision the ref made; the kid deserves not only a lifetime ban but a beating as well. Total punk scumbag.

If they did their ban is understandable. There should be no room for encouraging BS like that.

Jail time would be appropriate.

Certainly he should do some time for that. It's way out of line to hit the ref and really despicable if it's an old man.

As for the stoppage, anyone that wanted to win would have been frustrated with that, but that was typical for amateur boxing. I go to amateur shows pretty frequently and the refs can be quick to issue standing counts and they'll usually stop the fight if someone gets 3 counts against them, even if they weren't all in the same round.

Ya, quick stoppages are standard in the amateurs, or at least they were from 2007-2012 when I followed the amateurs closely. I haven't seen the complete footage, but based on the reports of him being dropped and given two counts in the round I'd be surprised if the stoppage was particularly quick, and thus particularly unfair, by amateur standards.

It seems like over the past few years the AIBA is trying to shift towards the standards of conventional pro boxing (e.g. the removal of headgear, WSB, and the pro league) so perhaps officiating will become more lenient, although I'm not sure this will occur in the juniors.

The stoppage was probably unusually unfair or something else (like some connection between the ref and the winning side) was going on which would explain the winner running away so quickly.

These were experienced boxers, so one wouldn't do something like that without serious provocation. Of course, the guy should be sentenced to some jail time for that.

Reminds me of when that psychopath who killed Max Kellerman's brother, hit that man after the contest was over.

He was banned for a year and fined and went to jail.

in the amateurs any combination of kd's and standing 8's adding to 3 in a round, and i think
4 or 5 in a fight, is automatic stoppage. the guy had an obligation to punch back if he already
had 2 ref counts that round and in that video he wasn't throwing back.
i have no problem with that stoppage in the amateurs. in the pros yeah i would be pissed
and the crowd would be throwing things at the ref if it was the home town fighter stopped
in that fashion. the other official who grabbed the boxer's foot and yanked him out of the ring
like a doll was pretty quick seeing how sudden the attack was. a lot of the officials are former
fighters themselves, and i've seen lots of old guys who can still fight.

i think this guy is supposed to be almost 80

I heard that he's in jail and was banned for life. That would be the correct thing too.

I hope the offending boxer does jail time too, this was disgusting behaviour and he certainly deserves the life ban. In isolation the stoppage looks bad, but I assume it was following other counts and/or KDs. Not unusual for amateur boxing. I'm not saying it's right, but those who say that the ref deserved it need to re-evaluate their outlook - the only time a boxer should ever use his fists outside of a sporting contest or training, is in self-defense and even then, only as an absolute last resort.

The other boxer fleeing the ring while the ref continued to get pummeled looks bad though, you'd have thought he'd have tried to restrain the guy.

Lewis - Bowe stoppage was worse, and it was in the fight for Olympic Gold! Nothing can justify such behavior, life ban is correct punishment from AIBA.

The attack was wrong, and he should rightly be punished.

But at the same time, would it have happened if the field wasn't rife with corruption ?

Vasiliy Lepikhin ( light heavyweight amateur champion)
I participated in Russian championships, but there was no sense, because it’s too much corruption and politics. We decided to turn professional. Here, it’s far more fair. There is no fans in the halls, because of the corruption. It’s very bad for the boxers, because many of them leave the sport.
Let's not kid ourselves....
