Mercer had a great chin, but was painfully slow and had a very porous defense, while Baer was a monster puncher. Mercer stands up to a beating for a few rounds, but when Baer goes wild in the 3rd, he gets caught and dropped early in the round. He rises and continues pounding Mercer before Mercer drops at the end of the round and is counted out. Baer KO3

Mercer did take everything Holyfield could throw at him. He went down once got up and made it a close fight. He also gave Lennox Lewis an even harder fight.
Ray Mercer could easily be outboxed. Just show him a jab and some lateral movement and he'd be lost. Max Baer would play right into Mercer's hands though, he wouldn't stick and move, instead he'd be thinking knockout all the way, and in a battle of toughness, a prime Mercer wins every time. Mercer was a poor boxer, but he was incredibly tough and could hit. Baer always looked great when he had things his own way, but he couldn't deal with adversity. After Mercer took everything he could throw at him, Baer wouldn't have a Plan B.

Baer had a great chin, as did Ray. There wouldn't be a knockout in this fight. Who wins the decision? I see Baer landing some good shots early but Ray winning most of the early rounds with the jab. By the 6th, Ray would start tiring and Baer would come on with hard hooks to the body and head. By the 11th, Ray would find a 2nd wind and come on strong to sweep a few rounds, but the conditioning of Max prevails and he wins a very close 15 round decision.
In summary, I view Baer was the harder hitter but Ray was faster and a much better boxer. The only reason he loses this fight is Ray always faded over the 2nd half of fights and over 15 rounds against the superbly conditioned Baer I see him tiring out from Baer's body attack and letting the fight slip away.
