Ward v. Burton

Post by iceman21287 »

I was living in a rural part of Washington (Roy for those of you who know the state well enough) from 1999-2001 and didn't have access to cable. No ESPN 2 and no friday night fights. So, it goes without saying, I wasn't able to watch this fight when it aired. I always heard it was an amazing fight, yet I never got around to watching it. I finally got the tape of it a couple of days ago, and after watching it, let me just say...holy shit!

The only fights, in my eyes, of the last 20 years that even rival Ward v. Burton are Gatti v. Ward I and Corrales v. Castillo I. People that say boxing sucks right now obviously don't watch anything other than the heavyweight division. Three of the greatest fights of all-time have occured within the last 5 years or so. I just stopped scoring after the third round or so...it was just plain amazing.

What did you guys think when you saw this fight for the first time?

Oh, and after watching the fight about 10 times in the last couple of days, I'm of the opinion that Burton got screwed out of a decision...although the fight was close so it could have gone either way...but one of the judges scored it 98-91 for Ward...I guess that's how hometown decisions work :-?

I watched this fight for the first time about a month ago. What a fight.

I agree that the scoring of the fight was a joke 91-98 is ridiculous.
