Lonsdale Belt for sale on Ebay

Highest Bid is 10 grand and at a buy it now price of 50 grand!

The second photo shows whos selling it I think or who won it anyway.

The Lonsdale is the best looking belt out there, it really does put all the other world title belts to shame.

Who would meet the £50k+? for that type of money it would have to have originally belonged to a real British great...and there just aren`t many of them.

I don`t know if its a good thing or bad thing the belts are capable of such prices, I mean in one way its good that a boxer can get a bit of a pension for it, but on the other hand is it a good thing he needs to sell a thing that took so much to win...except if its Junior Witters. 8)

agree totaly.its a shame if it really is a boxer who has to sell it but maybe its a belt that had been passed to someone and they just dont see the beauty of it

If i had the money i would certainly go for it, would look smashing on mantle piece above the fire.

I know what your saying, it is a real class belt and a beauty to look at.

Its just I`d feel like a thief to have it

If it is passed down through the family then fair enough but to buy it would..for me anyway, devalue it in some way...don`t really know if you understand what I mean but I just think the belts should stay with the person who won it or stay in that persons family because they will get the most from the great belt.

About 2 years ago, i e-mailed a company advertising in Boxing Monthly and asked how much it would be for replica belts. I had WBC or WBA in mind.

The reply came back '£800 but i can do u a deal if you purchase others'. I didn't bother replying.

Just a couple of things i've noticed, the seller has zero feedback, so that means that they have never sold or brought anything on e-bay, and the belt worn by the boxer in the photo isn't the one that is for sale.

I'd be a bit careful of this item.

I agree with tonyevs 100% on this one.

It would be like buying an old soldiers war medals, they would be nice to look at etc but would never really feel like mine. But if my Grandfather passed his war medals on to my, that would feel very different.

The only way I would want a Lonsdale belt was if I had won it in the ring.

think the origanal solid gold belt was in some kind of a museum I think there was a discussion on this forum about it.

The belt is one of a kind, made of solid gold and each disk is engreved with the outright winners. The belt from 1936-1993 was first won by Jackie patterson back in the 1930's and last won by lennox Lewis 1990's.

How did Lewis win his outright when he only defended it twice? Do they count winning it first then 2 defences as outright? Williams and Francis have won theirs outright too though so his list might need updating.

I think when Lewis won the lonsdale belt outright you only had to have 3 fights involving the British title (winning it and 2 defences) but they are very costly to make so for financial reasons they upped it to winning the title with 3 defences, one being a mandatory. I think thats right anyway. Anyone ?

I wouldn't pay out the amounts for either to be honest, but if pushed i would have to go for the replica alphabet title because even though its not genuine it looks like it and also it would be alot cheaper then the 10-50 grand i don't have. Sure would be nice to own a lonsdale belt though.

I have e-mailed the seller to find out the history of the belt he has for sale, have not received an answer yet.

You think at this price it would be the real thing!, as anyone handing over that kind of money would surely check what they are buying

This loks very dodgy. Anyone selling something at these prices would tend to do it through Sothebys or Christies because anyone prepared to spend that amount of money on an antique will want to audit it first or buy in the knowledge that a reputable auction house have done the diligence.

Low five figures for a genuine Lonsdale it quite tempting though, not sure how I could get that one past the Missus...

Bombardier" Billy Wells won a lonsdale belt outright, that was made out of gold, but that one is held at Woolwich Barracks.

What are they usually made out of? Why use gold just for his?

there were 22 original belts that were made with Gold, these were issued by the National Sporting Club between 1909-1935 .
The belts changed i think somewhen around 1920 , with the creation of the British Board of Control.

If there's no proof of who's belt it was they'll never get big money for it. Randy Turpin's lonsdale belt went for £23,000 at auction and he's one of the biggest boxing legends Britain has.
