cassius clay vs henry cooper

Post by L.A. kidd »

what happened? cooper got robbed by Dundee. clay [ he was clay then] goes back to his corner after the knockdown and

Dundee slits his fighters glove, then tells the ref he need a new glove, all the time clay is shaking off the left hook. I don't know how much time went by until the start of the 6th but, I know it was much longer than a minute.

how could Dundee get away with that? he must have learned that from an old time trainer. I doubt if he could have got away
with that in the states. but he did in England. it should never have been allowed.

what do you think?

Now how about Cooper v Carl Thompson. That could have been a fun up and downer. Thompson gets off the canvas to win in 5.

yeah, the revisionist got their way with that one(finally)
Regarding the amount of time between the rounds.
I dont wanna go into it again,
however I do still think that Ali would have won it anyhow,
even if he came out groggy after the usual 30 seconds of rest instead
of the(almost) two minutes.

Ive always been led to believe it was only seconds rather than minutes plus i dont think Dundee slit the glove, there was already a small tear which Angelo made bigger

Yep this topic gets lots of mileage. I never tire of telling the truth about this.

Fact is, Clay was given the night off, while they sent out for new gloves. While poor Henry was left to wait all night. Clay got rested up at the 5 star hotel, took in breakfast and a shower, headed back to the ring, and finished the fight in winning form.

Honestly, much poo about zip. A few seconds at the most of confusion. And back Clay went to rescue his pride from a very lucky and very happy Henry Cooper. Perhaps H'nry's hammer's finest hour, but the timing was on Clay's side as he was able to regain his wits, and continue with the Halloween style slashing.

Cooper made himself a legend off a lucky shot in a losing effort. He also served to educate Clay in a way that Clay seemed to parlay to his advantage as he grew wiser from it.

I'm inclined to believe the bbc on this one.

I've always thought that Angelo Dundee was one of the most prolific self publicists in boxing.
He's a great storyteller, but the story always seems to centre on his own contribution.

I'll probably catch hell for this, and I'm not disrespecting the guy, but if Angelo was unleashed on our internet age, he might remind me of Alex Ariza.

time....it can be measured.....It was NOT minutes. Except perhaps in an alternate dimension.

On earth it was about 5 or 6 seconds. Nothing all that critical.

The 2012 bbc report which mentioned the investigation involving analysis of the radio broadcast, maybe I should have been less ambiguous.

I don't see what the bbc's latest blunder in political correctness has to do with the topic, assuming that's what you refer to?

So they(the BBC) have the entire BBC radio broadcast of it uninterrupted in their"Archives" do they?
where is it then,I would like to hear it on-line,
and who originally called the BBC radio broadcast of the fight?
BTW was this mysterious Mr. Steve Bunce(if thats his real name) even born before 1962?
What makes him such and expert on it?

The article I posted a link to actually mentions the audio recording, which I assumed to be the recording of the radio broadcast.

But Harry Carpenters commentary is quoted as a reference, so now I'm not sure. Was the fight only broadcast on TV? Was Carpenter commentating for both radio and tv?

Either way, why would anyone bother to use such a recording to investigate the interval if it wasn't uninterrupted?

Im not really sure but but I think it may have been shown live closed-circuit in selected cities in Britain.
and then replayed a week later on the telly.

BTW when this topic comes up every year or so,
I notice no one has gone to the various London or other English newspapers
that certainly would have sent a member of the press to attend it.
If you can find at least several different reporters accounts
of the fight and not one mentions any delay,
then maybe I will come around to believe it,
but no one has gone to the archives to scan
any English newspaper articles from the following day.
Although I do remember a poster here
tried to pull a hoax with a phoney newspaper cover story and then deleted it.

I mean I wasnt there at the event,so whom I to judge?
My view on the fight isnt exactly set in stone.

The Facts

It was actually 45 minutes. I should know as I overheard two suspicious looking men of middle-eastern extraction on a bus outside Upper Tittingdon mention their Uncles's wife knew an old donkey trainer from Darn Sarf who always said "remember the '45" after he'd been drinking Cripplecock cider.

You shouldn't be surprised that this particular poster holds this view.

Like I say, time is measureable. There are uninterrupted audio and visuals of this....it was seconds.

nearly a minute is Cooper's corners fantasy, Minutes is the "urban myth".....Hours is Cooper's dream, and days are the distinct memories of Cooper's Fans.

In a nearby "alternate universe" H'nry is still waiting for Ali's return to the ring from an ongoing glove repair.

While many might scoff, I believe this revelation.
Several investigators have linked these 2 swarthy individuals to the Kennedy assassination that took place just five months after Clay-Cooper.
The Middle-Easterners quickly left England after the fight debacle and sailed to the U.S. where they scouted Dallas' Grassy Knoll for several months.
True story.
