Cleverly Vs. Bellew II - £16.95 on SKY Sports Box Office
Re: Cleverly Vs. Bellew II - £16.95 on SKY Sports Box Office
Team Stream all the way, this is not worth £17 + sky subscription
Re: Cleverly Vs. Bellew II - £16.95 on SKY Sports Box Office
So, does anyone know roughly how many buys Sky would be happy with? What is the minimum amount that this show could do to be deemed a success? £17 is steep considering the one sided nature of most of the card. If anyone thinks the Groves, Joshua and McDonnell fights are anyhting other than gimmee's they are dreaming.
I'm interested to know how much Sky will make from this and how much Eddie Hearn Presents will? Given that Hearn said there will be over £1m in purses for the whole card (not as much as I would have thought), there is probably lots of money to be made even with an average buy rate.

Re: Cleverly Vs. Bellew II - £16.95 on SKY Sports Box Office
The problem with putting such a meaningless top of the bill and poor undercard on PPV is that you devalue the concept of PPV and people who regularly buy it and decide to swerve this one and either not watch it at all or go with other methods especially will then more than likely do that to future PPV cards. So for short term greed you damage the concept of PPV, you pee off your regular SKY Sports boxing subscribers and in the end you won't make much out of it money wise anyway.
At 17 quid a pop can you really see thousands and thousands buying this on PPV ?

Come the night of the fight, you will have plenty of people scrabbling around on here begging for a link to the stream.
People will buy it.
It won't exactly be a big seller

Re: Cleverly Vs. Bellew II - £16.95 on SKY Sports Box Office
As others have mentioned, despite my misgivings & criticisms, if it was a more sensible price I'd probably be tempted to buy on the night - but £9.99 is the absolute maximum I'd pay for this card. Absolutely no chance I'd spend £16.95 on this PPV.
I wouldn't even have the option of inviting a few mates who are casual fans over to chip in, as they're not interested in paying to see a domestic clash & probably don't even know this fight is happening. Usually they ask me if I'm planning on buying a PPV (like Haye vs Klitschko or Froch vs Groves 2); not one person has even mentioned this fight to me (outside of a few hardcore fans I know who are refusing to buy anyway).

does it actuallay make any Difference to sky financially to put it as PPV ????
by that i mean by would it cost them any more to put it PPV than it would to show on Sky sports???
or is anything that gets bought a bonus?
is it skys money thats put up to pay for better opponents ect ???

I think your missing the point mate, it couldn't in a million years be made without box office, Hearn has openly said that this bill is costing over a million in wages for the fighters. Sky give £120,000 for a big fight so as u can see the numbers don't add up,
It's left to a simple choice make it Ppv or don't have it at all,
Eddie Hearn should have made the under card 5/6 50-50 fights then everyone would have been happy to pay the £17 but as it stands there are only 2/3 good fights in the card so far
Re: Cleverly Vs. Bellew II - £16.95 on SKY Sports Box Office
Eddie himself confirmed in an interview with Kugan a few weeks ago Cleverly Vs. Bellew II could have been on SKY Sports, but he wanted to make the event a special night for boxing. As a result of Eddie "stacking" the card, the show has to be PPV to cover the costs. So it was never really a case of "make it PPV or don't have it at all" as Eddie could have easily put the main event fight on SKY Sports with a select handful of undercard fights.righthook wrote:Gazmac81 wrote:does it actuallay make any Difference to sky financially to put it as PPV ????

I doubt it is the boxers purses that make it imperative that the show is PPV; most likely is the expected cut that the promoter wants to make.
I'm sure I've seen decent shows with similarly rated boxers shown on SKY sports.
I've said I won't buy this PPV and to be honest I may start getting into MMA as the writing seems to be on the wall for boxing. We're shown less respect as a group than any other sport enthusiasts and it takes the piss.

Aren't the majority of MMA cards PPV? In the states at least? I remember when UFC first started it was purely PPV.
It also appeals to non niche fans. It's a bit of a paradox.

Adam Booth had it right; he said this was not a PPV night, it was 4 or 5 regular Saturday fight nights all on the same night, and that boxing fans would have preferred this to be spread out over 4 or 5 weeks but that wouldn't make it PPV...
Never PPV in a million years.

Numbered cards are PPV in US but Fight Nights and Fox shows are free. All free on BT Sport for UK viewers though.orbtastic wrote:Aren't the majority of MMA cards PPV? In the states at least? I remember when UFC first started it was purely PPV.

Pretty much every WWE and MMA big card is ppv in the states, but given the population in the states anything over 600k buy is probably deemed a success.

True, but the WWE have recently launched the 'WWE Network', a subscription service similar to the allegedly channel - $9.99 a month but all shows & PPVs are free, with hours of historic content also available.Glass Joe wrote:Pretty much every WWE and MMA big card is ppv in the states, but given the population in the states anything over 600k buy is probably deemed a success.
I'd much rather see that type of business model succeed than the type Sky Sports & Matchroom are perpetuating.

The business model SKY and Matchroom are perpetuating could be called 'double dipping'.

Re: Cleverly Vs. Bellew II - £16.95 on SKY Sports Box Office
I believe that the normal way for these type of events to be resourced is as follows.
The live gate on the night plus sponsorship should pay all the purses and costs for the hall and security etc.
The promoter will be on a contract with Sky and will receive a fee for each show plus possible bonuses.
Sky get their money from our routine sports package subscriptions plus adverts.
Somebody somewhere is simply being greedy and I don't believe the purses come to over a million.
Hope it's a complete disaster .

One poor card on the 15th this month on SKY as all the matches are on the PPV, we're getting ripped off by SKY and HearnMarkMcBurney wrote:Adam Booth had it right; he said this was not a PPV night, it was 4 or 5 regular Saturday fight nights all on the same night, and that boxing fans would have preferred this to be spread out over 4 or 5 weeks but that wouldn't make it PPV...

Not being funny mate but it sounds like u don't really know what your talking about!
First of all I'm not defending this card as I expected allot more from it but at the end of the day your statement is well off.
Sky give between £100,000-£120,000 for a boxing show. Then if you look at gate receipts for this fight you are looking at anywhere from £300,000 to 500,000 (max)
Then if you add advertising at a push maybe £100,000
So if u add all that up and I'm talking the top end of all them figures your looking at £520,000
That's not even half the wages! Eddie has come out and said the wages alone for this show are around the million mark, then u have to hire the arena hire the security hire the staff to host it pay the police as there must be one police guard per 100 crowed, then there are obviously all sorts of other costs.
This event could never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever be made without pay per view!
People live in a fairytale world,
As I said earlier I am not saying this is an amazing event and it's great for everyone but I am a realist and I know it couldn't be made without Ppv,
Another point people need to wake up and realise is that sky pay buttons for boxing. Everyone says oh my skysports subscription should pay for this, we'll probably less than 2% of your sky money goes towards boxing 90%+ will go to football then the rest will go to golf cricket rugby etc before it goes to boxing.
Re: Cleverly Vs. Bellew II - £16.95 on SKY Sports Box Office
If the card couldn't be put on without PPV because of the purses, then split it into two or three shows on Sky Sports and make the money from that.righthook wrote:dalcumly wrote:I believe that the normal way for these type of events to be resourced is as follows.

When 10k tickets have been sold and the cheapest ticket is £40, then the absolute minimum they will make on the gate is £400k and as the ticket prices rise to £150 and £300 for VIP, it will certainly be more than the £500k max you state. And if you're adding up the top end of the figures you've quoted, it's £720k not £520k and it will be well more than that. There doesn't need to be one policeman for every hundred people in the venue, there would be 100 police in the venue at that rate and if that applied to boxing, the same would apply to football, so there would be hundreds of officers at each game.
The numbers can be made to add up without PPV, but Eddie chose to go overboard in a failed attempt to justify ripping people off. There's no need for George Groves to be on the bill for example, Hearn has no contract with him and he will be on a hefty purse, but they stuck him on there anyway, after the arena had sold out in a fight that doesn't add anything to the PPV value of the show, in fact I'd say it detracts from it as it's a complete mismatch.
Re: Cleverly Vs. Bellew II - £16.95 on SKY Sports Box Office
Matchroom's boxing contract will be a yearly affair - When they first started, they were contracted to provide X amount of shows, I think it was something like 22?
Obviously Matchroom also provide darts and other sports for SKY but that will be a separate contract.
A lot of people questioned did MR have the stable of fighters available to provide that many dates, with many people speculating that the Prizefighter nights would make up the majority of shows but he's got his cheque book out and signed some names and he's gone back to promoting fighters in their home town and obvious touches like that.
I thought it might be headed the way of "sports entertainment" with the appeal to the average punter, they certainly seemed to be headed that way with the Prizefighter format and the latest PPV stuff may well signal the way forward.

This is exactly the point - there's no reason to keep saying "oh, this card could never be made without PPV", because frankly no-one gives a fvck.expe wrote:If the card couldn't be put on without PPV because of the purses, then split it into two or three shows on Sky Sports and make the money from that.righthook wrote:

No-one was calling for this card to be made apart from Sky & Matchroom. The rest of us didn't ask for it, don't want it & won't pay for it.
