What's next for Miguel Cotto?
What's next for Miguel Cotto?
Personally i think Cotto will move away from Middleweight, he's far too small and even though Roach recognised Martinez as a "safe bet" (in the same way he has done with De La Hoya & Margarito for Pacquiao), GGG almost makes it impossible for Cotto to stick around at 160, because there is simply no other Middleweight match-ups that make sense.
I think Cotto will hijack Cinco De Mayo and make a mega-fight PPV with Alvarez. After he knocks him out, he'll look to finish his career off with a Mayweather rematch at 154, which Floyd will have no part in, and Cotto bids the sport fair well with a razor-tight 12 round fight with Timothy Bradley.

I would go for Jermaine Taylor.Easy win and a unification bout. Then Alverez.
Retire after Alverez with a nice fat paycheck.

I think you are right. Cotto's options are limited at 160, as they are at 154. I actually think there are more at 154 he would lose to. (Charlo bros, Andrade, Trout, Lara)tiny_acres wrote:I would go for Jermaine Taylor.Easy win and a unification bout. Then Alverez.

Because it's a great 50/50 fight between 2 top 10 p4p fighters. Who wouldn't want to see it? I think i'd probably lean towards Bradley nicking a split if he can avoid windmilling on the ropes.
Re: What's next for Miguel Cotto?
I think Canelo destroys Cotto. I've always been a fan of Cotto but his time is up. The win over Martinez flatters him. I hope they can make the Canelo fight though. It will be a great event.

Canelo will be eating left hooks on his way to the canvas. Cotto's brother nearly knocked him out, Miguel will finish the job, he's a class apart from Canelo technically.

Catchweight? Both men fit naturally into the light middleweight division. No way Cotto would be a big favourite, Pacquiao wasn't even a 'big' favourite against Bradley.
Re: What's next for Miguel Cotto?
I for one have zero interest in cotto-bradley.

Ofcourse he's top 10 P4P, what's really funny is people ranking 14-fight Rigondeux over a 4-weight world champion like Cotto because he snuck a points win over Donaire while being put on his ass, what's not funny is ranking Walters or Mikey Garcia over Cotto, that's beyond a joke.
I'm glad that you find Cotto KO'ing Canelo amusing, he did after all just KO Sergio Martinez, a better fighter in the weight class above, meanwhile Cotto's wee had Canelo chicken dancing across the ring.
Re: What's next for Miguel Cotto?
What Cotto achieved at lower weights is ancient history and doesn't matter for his current p4p rating. He hasn't had much success at LMW, and his win over a shot Martinez isn't worth much.Ricky_ wrote:ikorolev wrote:Somebody seems to be a big fan of Cotto putting him into top 10 p4p and thinking that he is capable of KOing CaneloRicky_ wrote: Canelo will be eating left hooks on his way to the canvas. Re: What's next for Miguel Cotto?
His win over Martinez is worth more than Walters over Donaire, Floyd over Maidana, Pacquiao over Rios, Marquez over Alvarado, etc.
Re: What's next for Miguel Cotto?
No. Very few fighters at 147 can beat Maidana but quite a few middleweights and light middleweights would beat the shot version of Martinez which was stopped by Cotto.Ricky_ wrote:His win over Martinez is worth more than Walters over Donaire, Floyd over Maidana, Pacquiao over Rios, Marquez over Alvarado, etc.

Re: What's next for Miguel Cotto?
He should just sit on ice until May. Why risk losing a mega-fight showdown with Canelo???

No. Martinez lost once at middleweight, a majority decision to PWill which he avenged with a brutal 1pko.
Who are the few welters btw? Devon Alexander & Amir Khan?

Calzaghe didn't lose at all, but it doesn't mean that a bunch of SMWs won't beat him if he fought today.Ricky_ wrote:ikorolev wrote:No.

Is Alvarez much bigger than Cotto though? Im not convinced. Cotto looked pretty similar in size to martinez when they fought and I think Alvarez would be much bigger than Sergio to be honest.fergusg wrote:Cotto is likely to face Canelo in May… and assuming he emerges victorious, which is no sure thing, then he either has to fight the winner of the Heiland-Macklin world title eliminator or alternatively be involved in a unification bout, otherwise he’d be stripped of his WBC belt.
Personally-speaking, if Cotto somehow defies the odds and defeats the much bigger Canelo Alvarez, then I feel he’s unlikely to fight Gennady Golovkin, simply because of the size disparity… unless GGG would agree to some sort of catch-weight stipulation (i.e. “officially” weighing 155lbs but only being allowed to gain 5lbs or so after the weigh-in).
Technically-speaking, Cotto is a free agent, but he has tied his loyalty to Top Rank and HBO, which means that fights against the likes of Jermain Taylor, Peter Quillin and Daniel Jacobs are unlikely, as they’re Al Haymon fighters.
I actually believe that Cotto’s options are rather limited at 154lbs also, because of the amount of fighters in that weight division affiliated to Al Haymon, which means that he won't be able to fight these guys either:
• Austin Trout
• Jermell Charlo
• Jermall Charlo
• Erislandy Lara
• Alfredo Angulo
• Demetrius Andrade
• Vanes Martirosyan
• Carlos Molina
• Floyd Mayweather Jr.
• Ishe Smith (by proxy of being a Mayweather fighter)
So unless Miguel breaks ties with HBO & Top Rank, which he seems reluctant to do (even though he’s able to do this very easily), then I’m not sure who he’ll face after Canelo.
Cotto obviously has a lot riding on his May bout against Alvarez, but if he does somehow win that fight, then I reckon that it may be worth his while financially to “cross the street” for a one-off rematch against Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Miguel Cotto is in the twilight of his career… and he should only be looking to engage in high-profile big-money fights from this point onwards. So it would be really surprising to see Cotto extending his career by facing lightly-regarded fighters like Rubio, Soliman, Murray, Macklin etc.I’ve read about this too… I’m not sure if I see the point in this fight, even though Bob Arum seems interested.Ricky_ wrote:Cotto bids the sport fair well with a razor-tight 12 round fight with Timothy Bradley.

Cotto fans are most delusional fans in the world
GGG would Dice him up within 4 rounds
I'm pretty sure Canelo finishes him inside 8
Hell I'd even favor Angulo to send him to sleep

Re: What's next for Miguel Cotto?
I clearly favor GGG to stop Cotto if they fight at middleweight.
I clearly favor Cotto over Canelo. It is amazing that some people want to dismiss what Cotto has done in the present and in the past. People were saying that Cotto did not have a chance against Maravilla even if Maravilla was not 100%. Some people were saying that Cotto did not have the power to hurt Sergio. Blah, blah, blah....
Now they are trying to say that it was the knee. The knee was not a problem it was the hook to the head that made the damage. Even Sergio did not use that as an excuse because he knew the truth. Cotto hurt him and hurt him bad. Even doctors after the fight examined Sergio's knee and they said nothing was wrong with the knew. But some people here want to pretend to be doctors and use that as an excuse. Sergio was the clear favorite going into the fight. Cotto showed he was the better fighter.
As for Canelo, please people get an ounce of reality. Canelo was being outboxed by The Gomez. Canelo does not know how to lead and has very poor footwork. I'm sure after Cotto beats Canelo I will hear a million excuses of how he was green or he was hurt, blah, blah, blah...
Angulo sending Cotto to sleep? You are truly a boxing historian. Please don't give up your day job.
Talk about delusional.

1 thing this thread has uncovered is how underrated Miguel Cotto is, and how far off people are when it comes to size.
Cotto is one of the sports truly elite operators. and yes, Martinez has been shot for a while but he still ground out wins against opponents such as Macklin & Murray. Cotto blitzed him inside a round with his unbelievable left hook.
As for the poster who thought Cotto was about the same size as Martinez....
Martinez is much bigger, he looks 2 divisions apart.

Re: What's next for Miguel Cotto?
Canelo or Trout, i truly don't see any point in Cotto fighting anyone else. His fake title at 160 is BS, if he doesn't plan n fighting GGG go back to 154.
Re: What's next for Miguel Cotto?
A lot of stupid posts in this thread, but there were a few good ones near the beginning that mentioned Taylor as an opponent. Taylor is one of the best risk-reward propositions for Cotto, Cotto is the best risk-reward proposition for Taylor, and there are no major promoter politics standing in the way. It would also be a title unification fight. It is basically the perfect business fight for both fighters.
Cotto's dominant and somewhat brutal loss to Austin Trout implies that he would also probably lose pretty clearly to Alvarez and Lara, amongst others. I don't think Cotto has any reason to take a fight that he would lose unless the money is right, and I think Alvarez is the only potential opponent who could make the money right.
So Taylor if he wants to get paid fairly for a probable win, and Alvarez if he wants to get paid handsomely for a probable loss.

Re: What's next for Miguel Cotto?
The question is if Haymon will want Taylor to lose the belt to somebody else's fighter even for great money. He would probably prefer Taylor to lose to Quillin or Jackobs.
