Box Rec forum. Before and after?

Post by NYDominican »

The Box Rec forum has a monumental wealth of information about many, many top boxers. Many very knowledgeable posters. Box Rec is like a Bible of boxing.

1. Before you joined Box Rec, who you thought of certain heavyweight boxers as being in the top 10.

But, upon you joining and seeing posts by other posters. Did this make you change your opinion about certain heavyweight boxers?

If so, why?

Please explain.

2. Before you joined the Box Rec forum, who you thought of certain boxers who you felt should rank in the top 10 for boxings "Pound for Pound" category.

But, upon you joining and seeing posts by other posters. Did this make you change your opinion about certain boxers who have been in contention for top ranking in the Pound for Pound category?

If so, why?

Please explain.

A major this has been the internet. Boxrec means we all know everyone's record or at least a decent portion of it.

So we can truly see the career scope of Ezzard Charles, Harry Greb, Sam Langford...

We can also see more footage of fighters than before. Read more articles. So we should be more informed.

On the other hand the internet has made everyone think their opinion is worthwhile...it's not... It gets tiring reading the views of internet muppets disregarding expertise.

My HW top 10?

Hard to say what the differences would be.

I think the bias towards fighters from more recent times is very strong. I guess the old size issue does come into play with HWs. I'm not sure how much my top 10 has changed though.

In the p4p category I'd say it's changed a lot with Greb and Langford being automatic top 5 guys.

Other guys outside the top 10 also have had their reps enhanced... Barney Ross, Kid Chocolate, Jimmy Bivins...

One guy who was always a dead cert top 10 and who seems to get overlooked these days is Bob Fitzsimmons. He must be one of the hardest, if not the hardest, p4p puncher in the history of the sport.

As I've said before, my list of top ten heavyweights has changed so much over the years. When I first came to BoxRec I was in Junior High, over fifteen years ago. Before then I visited CBZ (Cyber Boxing Zone) quite alot. Now that I am approaching 30 years of age, I can say I've got a more relaxed view--- that no matter the division, or mythical ranking system you wish to use, anyone in the top 20 on any given night could beat anyone else in the top twenty. The real issue, then is who could win the most matches in a series? That's when it gets real interesting.

Before coming to this forum, I used to think that the great heavyweight, Muhammad Ali s top 3 p4p alltime great fighter. And the great Joe Louis at number 4 atg p4p. But it has changed through the years when recently, we were discussing about the great Ezzard Charles. I believe now that p4p, Charles was better than Ali and Louis, not by far, but he is better than both of them in my view. But, I still have Ali ranked in the top ten, at number 8 and number 1 at heavyweight, and Louis at #2 @ heavyweight and #10 p4p.

I also had high regards about the great Jack Johnson in the top ten. But, I see now that he is not a top ten p4p. It is hard to rank heavyweights with other fighters. It really is.

I also used to believe that the great Sugar Ray Robinson, was the most complete fighter ever, but I have realized that there are at least ten boxers more complete than he. I believe that the greats Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran were more complete fighters than Robinson. Also, Charles was more complete fighter in my opinion than he.

I've had my opinions altered and sometimes changed dramatically; there are some really good and deeply informed posters and they far outweigh the odd crank or troll. Some of the posters on 'Boxers of the Past' are very idiosyncratic and I've read posts that could be published in book form.

I've 'been' on the site around 4-5 years and it is excellent and I still find it fun; some of the posters I imagine would be really decent company in real life though one or two should maybe see a doctor.

I like elmersalsa posts. I learn a lot though him. The guy knows his stuff, some of the others not so much. But because I like what he says and the way he says it, it has made me think again about some of the old timers.

Some of the other guys though are just so sarcastic and dismissive if you dare to disagree with them, and that just gets your back up and makes you look for reasons to disagree with them instead of trying to understand what they are saying.

That Il Duce character was complicated; he had some fantastic threads and put some really thought provoking stuff on - the other side of him though was plain barmy.

Klompton was good, a very knowledgable poster but he was too precious - threatening people with his lawyer every 10 minutes.
