George Groves is becoming more deluded by the minute
George Groves is becoming more deluded by the minute
Did anyone see his latest IFL interview? Kugan usually does a good job of staying neutral (E.g. Hearn and Warren) but even he looked awkward as Groves was babbling about Froch. He genuinely believes he was in complete control of the second fight and sees the first fight as his win just because it was stopped early. In reality he was in trouble in the first fight but never admits it and the second fight was even until that KO, no way was he in complete control.
I still believe he's a talented boxer and can win a world title but his role as the goody in Degale and Froch fights seems a bit false now. He was good at winding both up but seems an odd character who's had problems with Hearn, Booth, Degale and Froch recently. All of whom aren't exactly known for having problems with others in the industry.(E.g. They're not controversial Tyson fury type characters) I really hope he stops moaning and concentrates on fulfilling his potential.

Re: George Groves is becoming more deluded by the minute
I think he's going to struggle going forward unless he admits what happened in those fights. He did better than expected in the first fight as most thought he was well out of his depth (i definitely did) but he didn't have the stamina and would've been dropped and stopped if it had gone on for another minute. In the second, his vulnerabilities were again exposed by Froch and he was given a highlight reel defeat.
I also think he's going to struggle with not being the 'superstar' he thinks he is. The people i know who wanted him to beat Froch in the 2nd fight have little interest in him now. I wouldn't say he's anyone's favourite fighter either

Re: George Groves is becoming more deluded by the minute
Groves is very talented and hard hitting but has to stop going on about Froch as it's boring. There's no need for a third bout and he ought to be looking at making his way to another championship fight. Froch is going off into the sunset, Groves may have another 5 or more years to go.
Re: George Groves is becoming more deluded by the minute
He is deluded, but his line about Degale's only fight in a decent venue lately being on "my undercard", as he put it, made me chuckle.
Re: George Groves is becoming more deluded by the minute
His role has changed over the past few years. He was "the goodie" in the build up to the DeGale fight, whereas James liked to try and play on the whole; "I'm just a kid who came from the streets and won a gold medal for my country". On that bout DeGale was very disrespectful toward George and tried to present George as the loser and himself as the winner.danamba7 wrote:I still believe he's a talented boxer and can win a world title but his role as the goody in Degale and Froch fights seems a bit false now.
After that fight George was on a bit of a campaign of wearing suits and being eloquent and polite with people and trying to build up this "Gentleman George" persona. Some people like Spencer Olivier called him "a good kid and a gentleman" on Ringside. George furthered this when he fought Glen Johnson were he spoke respectfully about his opponent.
But he changed it all when going in to the first Carl Froch fight were he refused to acknowledge Froch's record and kept repeating that he knew he could beat Carl and said "technically Carl is a not a good boxer", etc...
It's just not true or consistent that Groves has maintained himself as one way or the other and it makes me wonder what his true nature is. Is he the polite kid from London? Or is the this poor trash-talker with an overinflated view of himself.

Agreed. In many ways, Froch is Groves' worst nightmare. This is a guy who is stronger than him, is tougher, has a better chin and has better stamina.palooka wrote:Groves is very talented and hard hitting but has to stop going on about Froch as it's boring. There's no need for a third bout

Re: George Groves is becoming more deluded by the minute
I'm going to defend GG here...
The first fight GG was schooling Froch....it is that simple. Yes he was in a bit of trouble but it's clear the fight was stopped prematurely. All this "another minute he would of been KO" is just assumptions and nobody actually knows. I'm sure any fighter would rather go out flat on there back than be head locked into a submission by the ref.
The second fight was closer and pretty even and GG has to hold his hands up and say he got "knocked the f**k out" It happens but it no way suggests that Froch is technically better because he isn't. quite simple. Ward and Taylor absolutely toyed with Froch (despite the 12th rd ko of taylor) and anyone else Froch has fought has just stood in front of him and been far too easy to hit.
GG is spot on when he says Froch has terrible footwork and technically brings nothing to the ring.

Gg got his ass handed to him twice
Re: George Groves is becoming more deluded by the minute
Froch is better than Groves though, it's as simple as that. Groves might be the more gifted athlete or whatever but overall as a fighter Froch is just the better man.jaymitch81 wrote:I'm going to defend GG here...

I don't think he's particularly one way or the other, just recognises what role he needs to play for each fight.Crease wrote:

Probably because he had a heavy knockdown in the 1st and was still recovering for a more than a few rounds after that punch, most boxers would have been knock completely out with that shot! when he did though look what happened, Stopping GG early or not still stopped! Then waited for that right hand in the second fight and Boom! Froch don't need good foot work or as many skills with that chin and stamina. Which in professional boxing is the main thing you need to be great?

Re: George Groves is becoming more deluded by the minute
Groves seems really bratty. Goes on about his victory vs degale, never once mentioning how razor thin it was. As for this third froch fight 'everyone is talking about', who exactly?

Totally agree lefty. Groves looked so good in the first fight because Froch was walking through treacle as he was so badly hurt. Froch can win a fight almost out on his feet, Groves can't. Groves was out of it in the first fight too and Carl has shown he can finish George off, utterly, with just one punch. Anyone who thinks Froch wasn't going to knock George out, badly, in the first fight needs to remove their head from George's bum. It was an early stoppage but the ref seen Groves dramatically sag and turn his back, Froch could have hit him with an arsehole winder and put him out for days. He got saved.
Re: George Groves is becoming more deluded by the minute
I agree with some of your post but I do think that Froch's technique is slightly underrated, he has a good jab and knows when to sustain attacks although his footwork is quite poor at times. But look at it the other way, his technique might not be elite class, but he's still won the commonwealth, British outright and 4 time world champion all with limited natural ability. He's done it mostly on a toughness and determination unparalleled in British boxing. He is an example to all young boxers on how to make the best of your ability. And as far as GG goes, he's been stopped twice by someone who "technically brings nothing to the ring".......jaymitch81 wrote:I'm going to defend GG here...

Spot on mate, it must hard to swallow being so close yet so far but if he wants to be the best in his weight then he really does need to put it behind him and use the defeats to spur him on instead of dragging them up all the time and boring everyone.palooka wrote:Groves is very talented and hard hitting but has to stop going on about Froch as it's boring. He'd probably get knocked out by Anthony Dirrell aswell.Lion-Heart wrote:Spot on mate, it must hard to swallow being so close yet so far but if he wants to be the best in his weight then he really does need to put it behind him and use the defeats to spur him on instead of dragging them up all the time and boring everyone.palooka wrote:Groves is very talented and hard hitting but has to stop going on about Froch as it's boring. He didnt school anyone, he did well, he landed some hard punches but he was taking punches too. Why people are still convinced he was good to carry on in that fight i have no idea. He was out on his legs and lucky the ref stepped in early so that he could blag to the blind that he was ok to carry on and would have won.jaymitch81 wrote:I'm going to defend GG here...

If he really believed he was winning the first fight, he wouldn't have changed his tactics in the second fight. Yeah it was an even second fight UNTIL he looked like he had been hit by a looney toons hammer.
The Haye v Chisora fight was fairly even until Haye smashed Chisora to bits - i dont hear anyone claiming Chisora was winning and just got unlucky.

Re: George Groves is becoming more deluded by the minute
Groves is normal, 95% of boxers talk loads of shit and will always manipulate any situation to their advantage. They pretty much have to do it and when they stop doing it, I'm not sure it helps them as they just become regular humans. There are a few that break the norm but there aren't too many, even fewer at the elite level.
I still like groves and appreciate that he has to do this in order to move fwd. Froch is no different and isn't in the few that break the norm! You still have to love froch.

I don't love Froch; he is a really good fighter and a very tough competitor but I can't warm to him.

As a fighter I mean, I don't warm to him either. However I love boxing and wouldn't want to miss a froch fight. His entertainment value in the ring is great.

Re: George Groves is becoming more deluded by the minute
Can anyone point me in the direction of a tough GG fight that goes twelve rounds and where he gets stronger and clearly gets the better of the last 2/3 rounds?
I cant, and that's why I find no evidence why he would have won the first Froch fight. At best, he'd have lost a disputed close decision.
Anyway, irrelevant. It took less than 3/4 of the next fight for Froch, again ahead on the scorecards, to knock him the fornicate out.
I like watching groves fight. But the way he's conducting himself just now is just shite.
God bless the likes of frampton and Joshua when there are such utter tossers like eubank, groves, bellew, fury etc. behaving like total twats.

Re: George Groves is becoming more deluded by the minute
I say this with no malice, but he is clearly deeply affected after his two meetings with Froch - both physically and mentally.
He had a gruelling first fight, that ended prematurely. Then he got completely poleaxed in front of an absolutely gigantic live and TV audience, in a fight he completely believed he'd win.
I don't know if it's the fights, the camps, TV commitments and press tours - more likely it was all of it - especially the KO loss... But Groves looked a shadow of himself against rebrasse.
I said it before he stepped in the ring, but he's slightly damaged goods now. And his slow, laboured performance backed up my forecast. He had no explosiveness, no snap, his legs looked laden and he shipped punches that he'd normally evade.
Also maybe Fitzpatrick isn't the task master that booth was.
To keep rattling on about Froch after Wembley, shows he is out-of-touch with the public's opinion of him. He's known by casuals as the guy who was cocksure of himself who got pancaked.

He wanted the fame and adulation that Haye got in his pomp and it is never going to happen in my view.
Re: George Groves is becoming more deluded by the minute
At all seems so forced. The entrance to the Rebrasse fight and having the band on the pay-roll. He wants what Hatton had without actually earning it in the ring. At least when David Price got creamed he went away and tried to re-build slightly out of the limelight.
