Sergey Kovalev Top 5 P4P, Give Sergey the credit he deserves
Re: Sergey Kovalev Top P4P (No ones ever beat Bernard that b
He's certainly up there ... although Horse will have him number 34 or something daft. The likes of Golovkin, Mayweather, Ward, Klitschko and Rigondeaux take a bit of shifting but Kovalev is certainly among them.
Just to make a point didn't Horse have Hopkins at number 9 before the Kovalev fight? Well Horse, Kovalev didn't just beat Hopkins he completely dominated him so if you don't rate Kovalev accordingly you're making yourself look a bit silly.

Hopkins dropped hard, beat up, and didn't win a single round.
In over 20 years in boxing, fighting the best, no one has ever beat Hopkins this completely.
Where does this put Sergey P4P?
I'd definitely say he's top-5 P4P after this. 120-107 UD over Hopkins is seriously impressive.
Yes he is.

I made a thread asking about it on two sites, both have the overwhelming majority of people ranking him in the top 10:fergusg wrote:You're getting a little carried away. For sure, Kovalev fought well, but he's not a top 10 pound-for-pounder.

It doesn't surprise me that you will keep him off your top 10. But thankfully, it looks like most people will be fair.
Re: Sergey Kovalev Top P4P (No ones ever beat Bernard that b
Definitely an argument for top 10. The rated P4P fighters near his weight have a good chance of being KO'd if they ever fought, so there's plenty of room.
P4P lists are a joke though, so it doesn't matter either way.

He won't have a proper opponent? He has just completely dominated hopkins, a world champion that the majority (box rec poll) said would win the fight.
Some people are in serious denial.
What is it?
Russians can't be P4P champs?
Non black Americans can't be P4P champs?
Europeans can't be P4P champs?
I'm clutching at straws here, what is it?
to emphasize once more, unless i'm mistaken, horse had hopkins number 9 P4P, and Kovalev has just pissed all over hopkins.

He's not top 10.
He's probably top 5.

I think he's got a strong argument for a top 10 placing.

Please educate yourself and perform some self study.
What part of my post do you disagree with?
Apart from Stevenson who at his weight do you want Kovalev to destroy?
Re: Sergey Kovalev Top P4P (No ones ever beat Bernard that b
I disagreed with your notion about the availability of opponents that could elevate Kovalev as being regarded as a genuine top ten pound for pounder. The 175lb division had a lot of fighters affiliated to either Showtime or Al Haymon.
Kovalev victory over Hopkins has too many question marks over it that would be criticises by the boxing media.
You can question ANY fight. If Mayweather beat Pacquiao you could argue that Manny was past his best. At the end of the day you go by what is laid in front of you.

Kind of like what you said about Rocky Marciano not deserving any recognition or respect, right?fergusg wrote:I agree that Kovalev won't have a good enough opponent to warrant him being classed amongst the top ten pound-for-pounders
So now you'll start saying "the division is weak" won't you?

Marciano was another legend. He beat no-one;
Archie Moore
Jersey Joe Walcott x2
Ezzard Charles x2
Roland De Starza x2
Joe Louis
There is too much politics and bullshit involved in boxing sometimes.

Very true.Ian1973 wrote:There is too much politics and bullshit involved in boxing sometimes.
But it was good to hear Lampley and Kellerman put prejudice and politics aside, and recognize Kovalev as the best light heavyweight in the world (after the fight tonight).

Definitely throw Kovalev up there, who cares where. He's clearly one of the best in the world, and Ward is retired until proven otherwise so take him out.

The professor was taken to school last night. Prone bully and racist got his rear nod kicked.
Kovalev showed skills and smarts last night. Huge punchers are often shunned on pound for pound lists. But Kovalev is more than just a puncher. As such he should rate in the top 15 p4p

Re: Sergey Kovalev Top P4P (No ones ever beat Bernard that b
Kovalev has to be in that discussion now I would think. If you take Hopkins age out of the equation I think his performances have been a little bit overrated in recent years. He's been winning but hasn't looked that good for a long time now. That said, even after last night he is clearly one of the better fighters campaigning at 175 and Kovalev beat him with absolute ease. Its hard to really criticise Kovalev right now, he is doing the job and doing it well. I don't think it matters too much where he ranks or if he's just inside or just outside the top 10 at this point. He's clearly one of the best fighters in the world.
Re: Sergey Kovalev Top P4P (No ones ever beat Bernard that b
That's due to the fact that nobody else has ever been in the ring with the almost 50 year old version of Hopkins.Leather Daddy wrote:Sergey was sensational in thoroughly beating the veteran Hopkins tonight.

woohoo.................a natural light heavyweight dominated a 50 year old blown up middleweight.
Forget everything else, enshrine him in the hall of fame tomorrow.
Re: Sergey Kovalev Top P4P (No ones ever beat Bernard that b
yes another white guy beat the great Obamacan racist... I just wish he would have been from Arkansas like JT was.
"I will never lose to a white boy"
-Bernard Hopkins-
"I will never lose to somebody from Arkansas"
-Bernard Hopkins-
Now of course keep in mind he said all these terrible things before he started cheating full time lol. scumbag 27 time convicted felon lol
It's good to see a good guy beat the bad guy.
Too bad we don't got any video on cops and when they arrested Bernard Hopkins for selling drugs to kids or robbing somebody lol
-DOC-

Re: Sergey Kovalev Top P4P (No ones ever beat Bernard that b
just because you beat a p4p rated fighter doesn't mean you replace him in the rankings, if madaina had beat mayweather would that have made him p4p no1 ? of course not you have to earn a p4p ranking its not just based on one win, this is exactly what I hate about p4p stuff people start talking about it like its an official status when its merely a matter of opinion.
Re: Give Sergey Kovalev the credit he deserves
I think Kovalev is getting plenty of credit for beating a 49 year old man. Dawson was out of the P4P mix when he lost Pascal, but prior to that yes Chad Dawson was recognized as a P4P player. Kovalev fought a smart fight, showed some good skills and proved he's more than just a flat footed, come forward brawler like a lot of people claimed he was.Leather Daddy wrote:Sergey should be a top-5 P4P fighter.
He just dominated Bernard Hopkins in literally every single round and came frighteningly close to knocking him out.
Bernard has been around boxing 30 years and never was beaten up this completely despite fighting elite guys even into his 40 ' s (Dawson, Pascal, Shumenov, Cloud, Calzaghe, Jones Jr, Tarver).
When Dawson beat BHOP people were mentioning Dawson as being a top P4P fighter and he beat BHOP way less one - side day than Kovalev.
Kovalev completely outclassed Bernard and it seems to me Americans just refuse to give him any credit (Ps often the same idiots who predicted a Hopkins win).
Are all Americans anti-Russian?
There's giving him credit and there's giving him more credit than he deserves. I think Kovalev deserves to be in the P4P discussion, a win over old man Hopkins shouldn't put him in the top 5 though because the rest of his record is lacking. I mean lets be serious here lol, Kovalev did after all beat a 49 year old man who's prime was at 160 lbs 10 + years ago. That's just the nature of the situation. The fact that a 49 year old Hopkins is now Kovalevs best win is the reason he doesn't deserve a top 5 spot. Not because I don't want to give him credit, it's because he really hasn't earned the spot lol, it's not like Hopkins was on a 10 year win streak, we already saw Dawson dismantle Hopkins years ago in a lot of the same ways Kovalev last night. The only difference is Kovalev posses more power than Dawson, but Dawson also "easily" beat Hopkins (despite that bullshit judge that scored it a draw).
Re: Sergey Kovalev Top P4P (No ones ever beat Bernard that b
yeah because of course he would never beat Floyd Mayweather lol

Kovalev does deserve credit, and my hat goes off to him. Great win. FYI, starting multiple threads saying the same thing won't help get him more praise.

What is the point in starting different threads with different titles basically saying the same thing?
Re: Sergey Kovalev Top P4P (No ones ever beat Bernard that b
P4P is who is the best regardless of weight. If someone beats the man widely considered to be P4P #1, then they should take their place at number 1. What I hate about P4P is when people start banging on about resume, it's about ability not what a piece of paper says.littlepug wrote:just because you beat a p4p rated fighter doesn't mean you replace him in the rankings, if madaina had beat mayweather would that have made him p4p no1 ? of course not you have to earn a p4p ranking its not just based on one win, this is exactly what I hate about p4p stuff people start talking about it like its an official status when its merely a matter of opinion.
