This guy has replaced Mckrackon http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... &cat=boxer
I hope Soi wins it, but he looks chubby and hasn't fought for nearly a year, he hasn't made cruiserweight for years.

Re: NZ Super 8 cruiserweight tournament
Hopefully this time, unlike heavyweight tourney, winners of eliminator 1 & 2 get to trade punches in semi 1 and 2 & 3 in semi 2, AND it doesn't take a year & a day to add-up 3 round scores ;;-)
Re: NZ Super 8 cruiserweight tournament
Yep they certainly had a few teething problems last time. The one that most annoyed me was getting there for the first undercard fight at 7pm only to find out it happened at 6.30, I then had to sit around til half seven for the next fight. Crazy.
Have you heard anything about Kali Meehan son turning pro on this card as well?
Not sure if they've found an opponent or if its even happening.

Re: NZ Super 8 cruiserweight tournament
Very interesting 8 man in my opinion for various reasons......
Brad Pitt & Daniel Ammann are both serious contenders with Pitt having the type of Power that can finish the fight with on punch and Ammann the awkwardness and style to outbox guys over 3 also. However how will both adjust back to the shorter sprint format?
Bryant, Filimaea and Emmerson the Kiwi hopes all pose threats of there own with Bryant being a former amateur star with heavy hands hes a dark horse Filimaea has improved alot over recent years under the guidance of Tua, his fitness in my opinion is his key asset and Emmerson a tough hearty type who's long and rangy.
Vaitele Soi is experienced and has won this type of tounry previously albeit against a less dangerous field of opponents having said that he had to take the toughest route through some decent fighters including former world title challeneger Mohammed Azzaoui. Question marks remain over his conditioning and ring readiness after a long time out of the ring.
Israel Adesanya is a real wild card here and experienced kick boxer and recent winner of the kickboxing version of this tourny called King of the Ring here in NZ. He's also competed in MMA and the Glory promotion. Over 3 rounds he possess the ability to give everyone in this tounry a real hard time, fast hands, a good eye, slick movement, unorthodox everything which makes fighitng someone like him over 3 rounds a difficult proposition.
One further international wild card to be added will be interesting

A NZ 'champion' fighter - Maori or Pakeha are as rare as hens teeth. I don'tthecrab wrote:A Maori champion fighter is as rare as a hens tooth
Sure ther'es been plenty of contenders..

Re: NZ Super 8 cruiserweight tournament
Sadly, for a fight fan like me the above statement is true. There's, simply put just no money in boxing here. Sports fans are mad on rugby and taught it from a very young age. There's also a lot more money in league, it's a shame really because the sheer size of the nz'ders would make for some great heavyweight boxers. I think that's why the boxing fans here are getting behind Joseph Parker, a big lad who can certainly box. Along way to go with him though.
Even football/soccer is bigger here and with players like Ryan Nelson and now Winston Reid, it's only going to get bigger. Even netball is shown on television probably 10 times more often than boxing. Throw cricket into the mix and little old NZ is simply not big enough to accomodate so many sports.
It's such a shame David Tua didn't become world champion, then who knows how it could of changed the sporting landscape?

Re: NZ Super 8 cruiserweight tournament
I see Fiji based boxer Joseph Kwadjo has been added to the cruiserweight list for Saturday night.
Interesting that Kwadjo was pencilled in to fight Damian Hooper [at light heavy] in Brisbane on 8/11/14 but dropped out late
and was replaced by WA's Rob Powdrill [and we all know how that panned out]
Around the same time last year Kwadjo was also to fight in Brisbane when he dropped off the card claiming an injury
and turned up a couple of weeks later in Sydney on the Mundine V mosley debacle on 27/11/13.
He fought Renold Quinlin over 8rds losing by UD pts
He hasn't fought since and has obviously stacked on the KG's and couldn't make weight for the Hooper fight.
Doesn't seem like a very reliable character.
Imagine there would be some Aussie promoters wouldn't touch Kwadjo with a barge pole.

Re: NZ Super 8 cruiserweight tournament
Not about to get involved in a race debate here but we do have some very good boxers of Pakeha decent
Nik Charalamapus
Anthony Taylor
Ricky Murphy
Jo Blackbourn
Robbie Berridge
Along with some very good Maori boxers or at leats have maori in them
Gunnar Jackson
Reece Papuni
Sam Rapira
Dave Aloua
And of Course we have Shane Cameron still fighting of Pakeha/Maori decent
End of the day theres not the $$$ in the sport here which has already been mentioned but I think for a nation of roughly 4mil we dont do to badly!

Apparently Visa was the reason he didn't meet Hooper. Perhaps he overstayed his last welcome? The Raw Prawn wrote:I see Fiji based boxer Joseph Kwadjo has been added to the cruiserweight list for Saturday night.

Sure hope Pitt doesn't get KOed again. It would probably be the final straw for him.

He is 40-2 at kickboxing but has never had a pro boxing fight. Big call to expect much from him here I'd suggest.smith-striker wrote:I reckon adesanya will make things interesting

I reckon this is one of the best boxing cards put on in NZ boxing history.
Re: NZ Super 8 cruiserweight tournament
Over 3x3 Adesanya will be a handful!! Surprise package and if he draws one of the lesser guys first up and wins he'll only grow in confidence as is his nature.
Lance Bryant is a live underdog for me also.
Meehan/Cameron is hard to pick although im leaning towards Meehan
Aloua/McCracken is a better fight than Baff in my opinion.
The super 8 is anyones to win !!

Re: NZ Super 8 cruiserweight tournament
Hope it turns out that way. Meehan vs Cameron could be an interesting fight. But equally could result in a huge fizzer. It will depend a lot on how well Kali has prepared and how much he has left in the tank.tsmithy50 wrote:I reckon this is one of the best boxing cards put on in NZ boxing history.
Re: NZ Super 8 cruiserweight tournament
should be a good card, I think Pitt will take out the torney.
Alhoua needs to rematch Ammann in my opinion.
Cameron should KO Meehan. Meehan has always been highly overrated since his SD loss to Brewster, imo.

Re: NZ Super 8 cruiserweight tournament
When you fight in the pecking order and who you fight can play a big part in shaping the result of these tournaments. Ideally you want to be fighting the weakest opponent in the very fight fight of the program.tsmithy50 wrote:The draw for the super 8 is at city boxing gym at 11.30 tomorrow, if i'm not working I might take a look.
Re: NZ Super 8 cruiserweight tournament
Meehan KO Cameron Ammann to win CW tourney(by decision obviously).
Re: NZ Super 8 cruiserweight tournament
I took a stroll down today, quite a good crowd.
It was like a who's who of Australasian boxing, Danny Green whose going to commentate was on the mic asking the questions, David Tua was there.
The draw for the super 8 was,
Pitt v.s Kwadjo (who didn't turn up for the weigh in)
Ammann v.s Adesanya
Filimaea v.s Emmerson
And the one I'm looking forward to most
Soi v.s Bryant.
Gonna be a cracking night.

Re: NZ Super 8 cruiserweight tournament
Apparently his flight was delayed, but visa problems would make more sense. I wonder who the reserve is? On a seperate note if any of the fights are a draw there's going to be a fourth deciding round which is a good idea.
