Guys that moved up to Heavyweight for title

Post by JDT »

Floyd Patterson
Micheal Spinks
Roy Jones Jr.

Floyd Patterson won the title, except Sonny Liston was too much for him. He later got beat by Muhammed Ali.

Micheal Spinks won the title, except couldn't handle Mike Tyson.

Roy Jones Jr. beat John Ruiz.

Let's mix-and-match them a bit.

Floyd Patterson vs. Mike Tyson
Floyd Patterson vs. John Ruiz

Micheal Spinks vs. Sonny Liston
Micheal Spinks vs. Muhammed Ali
Micheal Spinks vs. John Ruiz

Roy Jones Jr. vs. Sonny Liston
Roy Jones Jr. vs. Mike Tyson
Roy Jones Jr. vs. Muhammed Ali

Who wins?

Ali TKO 6 Jones

Speaking of light heavyweights moving up to heavy...how bout Billy Conn? He didn't win the title but he was about 2 rounds from winning it and the only reason he didn't was a tactical error. I think a guy who was clearly outpointing Joe Louis could easily hold his own with Liston and Tyson, provided he didn't attempt to trade blows. Ali would have beat him easily, by UD or late KO, but Conn handled smothering opponents like Tyson and Liston exceptionally well for light heavy

BUT LOUIS WAS HORRIBLY DEHYDRATED and that was a big reason why he had such an off night vs conn not to mention conn was a great fighter

There are so many....

Gene Tunney...

Right up to Michael Moorer or Chris Byrd...however your feeling

The modern weights make it harder but given the incentive the big boys are willing to join the fat boys

What could Tyson have made if he really boiled down like some of the guys??

The way Tyson was built...he probably could have gone down to Cruiser but I doubt he could get much lower than 185

...billy conn was not clearly outpointing louis in that fight. it's one of boxing's most enduring myths. i'll give the scoring of the fight is nobody else does....too much into the 12 days of christmas now to do it.

it was a very close fight, in fact one of the judges had the fight even entering the 13th. if louis won the last 3 rounds, he would have won a majority decision.

louis-conn rates up there marciano-walcott as one of the biggest myths when it comes to how far in front they were. people think conn and walcott were giving them boxing lessons and dominating them, when in fact entering the 13th walcott and conn were only winning the fight by a 7 rounds to 5 round margin.

..the walker/sharkey fight wasn't for the heavyweight title.....walker also fought schmeling and got stopped... beaten so bad that schmeling asked the ref to stop it....which he finally did...walker just wouldn't stay down.

remarkable though.... this short stocky middle...and former welter....fighting two heavyweight champions. he also fought maxie rosenbloom (light heavy title) and other heavyweights.
