Gout
Bit of an odd subject this, but bear with me....
....I've had a really painful foot over Xmas and thought I'd broken something so went to the hospital today. Turns out I have gout. Now, I don't know about youse, but when I think of gout I think of fat old men.
Anyway, turns out that the reason I have gout (which by the way anti-inflammation drugs can handle) is that I've been getting myself fitter and eating healthier over the last couple of months and lost a stone and a half. This has caused my body to produce more uric acid than it can handle and this has led to gout!
Anyway, this made me wonder - anybody ever heard of boxers getting gout?

Only the old ones...who have hit the booze hard
Jokes aside, a friend of mine has gout, and he is no big drinker( he too is Welsh so that may make a difference when I say he is no big drinker)...but he is old ..60+....how old are you?
He too was keen to explain it is not just the boozers who get it, he said that eating too rich a food can have a similar affect.
Carrot juice is said to help, and is it a coincidence its xmas? 8)

33....a bit too young for gout I thought.
The irony is I've been on nights over Xmas and haven't had a drop of booze nor any rich food. I'm sure the quack thought I'd been caning the booze and eating loads, but there you go. In fact, the really ironic thing is that for the last 2 months I've been eating probably the healthiest ever!

The gout's in the joint of the big toe (on my right foot). Wonder if Vitali Klitschko has had any similar problems having lost weight (see James's post).
Could be all sorts of things causing pain in toes. Thinking about it people tend to eat richer food and more food anyway as well as drinking more at Xmas, so I bet a lot of people develop aches and pains at this time of year as a result of this which then disappear in January when normality resumes.
Still, I'd go and see a quack. You might as well get something back for all the taxes/national insurance you pay!!!

Don't do any exercise myself, so I've nothing to worry about. I used to do a bit of pole vaulting when I was younger, but I soon got over that.

A week on anti-inflammatories and my gout seems to be clearing up - I can actually put full weight on my foot today (first time since Xmas Eve). Other side of my foot hurts from limping though ha ha. Interestingly yesterday I felt the effects of the anti-inflammatories had plateaued but I drank a lot of water (4-5 litres) at work and today there's a marked improvement. I noticed a lot of info on the internet suggested drinking more water. Probably a coincidence though.

Just checking in from Andalucia where a surfeit of fine rioja and Carlos Primera led to a raging gout attack :x over the holidays
Fortunately, this not being the first such attack, I had plenty of medication which, with drinking 3-4 ltrs of water a day did the trick
for a more natural remedy, I make celery juice and eat lots of cherries both of which break down uric acid crystals and help the body process purines and cleanse the body of uric acid.
I also use this
