You never seen a parry defense, no? TBF the guy has a point, Pulev has fought his way to a heavy weight world title shot and you've never seen him? Poor indeed.

How on earth did he trouble Wlad by getting thumped to the Canvas repeatedly - all he did was maul, hold and wrestle.

Of course I woudldn't last a round with Pulev, I'm not a professional fighter am I? What relevance does that have, you moron! This is the style is it? Well, Wlad doesn't fight like that does he? The new style is to have no defence, and paw with the jab, no head movement, and get chinned repeatedly - that's not a style that is going to catch on. Pulev didn't parry shite.

I'm sorry, but in this day and age, you can get to fight for a world title without being much cop in the heavyweight division, as the talent pool is paper thin - the standard is very very poor - it has to be if someone as bad as Tyson Fury is a top contender.

The heavyweights of the 80's were far more skilled than these guys, - everyone bangs on about Olympic boxing - but the fact is amateur boxing sucks these days, has done for a long time now - a lot of successful amateurs don't cut the mustard at professional level - Audley Harrison ring any bells?

It's just that Dr Steelhammer wrecked him with such ease that made him look so poor.

Pulev decisioned Thompson, the man who knocked out Price twice, handed Solis his first loss and also put his own wife in a wheelchair just with his cock.
WTF!!! Hahaha.

In seriousness, I'm going to watch some more of Pulev's fights, and see what I think - it is possibly that the gap has grown so big between Wlad and everyone else that they just fall apart when they face him, however, if that is so, that still means the current crop are pretty poor. The fact is, I don't follow the sport as avidly as I once did, as I've become very jaded over the last couple of years. The really big fights never seem to happen - to the point where I resent paying for fights any more - I did my time following the sport, spent years of several hours a day researching, writing and watching fights - so you'll all have to excuse me if I don't seem like a fan to you - perhaps I'm not anymore, but I sure as hell still love a really good fight when it happens. I'd give my right nut to see Froch v GGG for instance, and maybe my left for Froch v Hopkins, for the intrigue of it.

It's not like wlad has taken boxing skills to a new planet, and is vastly superior to everyone who came before him - far from it - for a man of his size, he has good skills, coordination, and an excellent fighting brain, but this is aided by the fact that the rest of the pack lack a deep skillset, or are not disciplined or confident enough to carry out their gameplan, or in some cases, merely stay in shape well enough to give themselves a chance.

I have come to admire Wlad - his dedication to his craft is admirable - and I'm not a nostalgia freak either, I think he would have battered the likes of Frazier for instance - (but not Ali, Holmes to name but two) - but really - the level of capability of the current contenders is very poor.

Oh to have someone of the calibre of Holyfield or a young Bowe to be facing off against Wlad - unfortunately, he's not faced anyone of that calibre his entire career, and never will, because the talent isn't there.

Just before the finishing shot, Pulev landed a few with Wlad's head going up in the air but he took them well. Oh well don't annoy Wlad seems the moral of that story. I have to say Pulev fought scared to me, he was very jumpy and looked like an amateur but as others have said Wlad can do that to you.

Yep it is poor to have not seen the number 3 Heavyweight in the world box before I agree, the heavyweight division in recent times has done that to me unfortunately, I was brought up watching guys who had skill and a decent punch output, and on occasion even some passion. I'd heard some thing good things about him on here and in other places but was pretty shocked to see how bad he was. To be fair though I should watch a couple of his other fights, maybe as James says the field between Klitschsko and the others is that wide. Still pretty sure as a punter I can spot talent when I see it though.

I'm not sure why everyone is slating Pulev so much. The facts are he earned that shot, fought his way to being the #1 contender. If he was sh1t he would never have gotten that far.

Maybe he isn't as classy as fighters gone by but that's hardly reason to give the guy stick?

It's an unusual style that UK fans are not used to seeing for sure but parrying/keeping distance is a recognised defense, whether you pull it off or not lol Joshua parry's a lot, he doesn't slip much, it's just a style.

Wlad does seem to be just so much better than everybody else at the moment, but i've said it for years, Pulev is the best HW in the world not called Klitschko and not one of his opponents has proved me wrong so far. I still stand by it.

I'm not slating him PERSONALLY, I'm sure he's a wonderful human being - I'm just shocked by how poor his technique looked. I find it staggering that people are saying he did well, given that he was dumped on his arse twice in the 1st round and four times overall, including the KO.

I guess everyone is so used to totally shut outs that the fact his opponent landed a few shots gets people excited these days.

Stiverne has very fast hands and has that concussive power that comes with fast hands. I would
put my money on Stiverne beating Pulev that's for sure.

I rate Pulev as a good fighter though, he did the best he can against a dominant champion.

Give you that one, mate. I love that type of fighter tbh, Andy Ruiz/Mike Perez, both exciting to watch from a technical point of view.

Maybe Stiv/Pulev will happen, Wilder might finish the big guy though.

For the record, I think Wilder is absolute gash! Horrible boxer, looks like he's been schooled in a back yard ffs. But he can hit like a train, so he always has that chance.

I thought Pulev looked pretty good as Vlad challengers go. I think it's nigh on impossible to get in with Vlad and retain your usual style, so what Pulev mustered up seemed to work ok IMO. You've got to acknowledge that it's a massive task taking on VLad (whatever people think of him).

Pulev ruffled Vlad's feather a couple of times, definitely come to fight and didn't show him too much respect or look terrified. That was one hell of a well timed left lead to Pulev's chin to close the show.

As long as Pulev stays focussed on boxing he can still figure in some big fights.

Good call.

RE: the fight. I thought Pulev looked about as good as I've seen him--he is limited, just in a weird way: he jabs, he parries, his hands are held out three feet from his chin, his feet are never quite right. It's literally all he does. He actually did better than I thought he would--no way with that kinda non-punching humungous amateur style was he gonna win vs Wladdy. I saw Pulev beat Thompson & Travis Walker & Ustinov & that kiddie Fury KO'd in five, & I heard he was gonna fight Wladdy & couldn't stop laughing for a week, simply 'cos stylistically he had next to no chance whatsoever.

I thought he did quite well to stun WK with a 1-2 just before he ate that first left hook that decked him, he had Wlad looking panicked & hanging on (good job by Tony Weeks I thought, as well, nice to see a proper ref in a Klitschko fight) but then Klit just bombed him & that was literally that. Pulev seemed adamant that Wladdy was doing something weird but I think the poor boy was still in La-La Land from taking that left hook. Might've broke his cheekbone by the look of it.

Klit's best performance for some time imo, but I still hold to the feeling that Pulev kinda sucks arse, so, you know. YMMV & all that.

Datsue, i don't agree mate sorry.

Pulev style is catching or deflecting Wlads jab, causing him to lose balance and coming inside with a counter. Ok he didn't have great success with it, prob had more success with his own stiff jab but that's a good fight plan if he could have carried it out.

How do you beat Wlad, or what style beats him? Movement obviously, you got to make him miss because he's coming forward all day at you, therefore you don't even need that much power.
You can't take Wlad shots to your gloves/arms, he's too heavy handed so tucking up in survival mode is pointless.

Is there anyone out there can do it? Who knows.

He doesn't come forward, he just gives the illusion he does. He actually spends his entire time keeping his distance and alternating between clutching or jabbing when the other person gets into range.

Richie Woodhall actually made the point beforehand, that he jabs and moves back, not forward.

His entire style is centred around not having you in punching range, but controlling that distance with either a jab or spoiling techniques.

He looked a little ragged in there at times, reminded me in touches of the Brewster and Sanders fights, where when it was coming back at him he's disorganised and his feet are all over the place. He likes to be in control, he knows he can't hold a big shot from lumps like Pulev so it's about negating their ability to land big shots.

Ask David Haye if he doesn't come forward

Yes he leans back, to avoid a counter. I think once he has the measure of you he hunts you down.

It's a confidence thing too i suppose.

If he kept coming forward at Haye, then why was his first excuse his broken toe that he couldn't push off?

I'll save you the time, here's his own words:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/boxing/14004800

"I couldn't push off the right foot to throw the right hand."

"I was trying to egg Wladimir on to come closer so I could land some punches, but he fought the smart fight."

"I've got a lot of respect for Wladimir and he's a great fighter. Everything that was said in the lead up was for him to come and get me so I could land my shots."

I think Wlad was still coming forward in that fight and Haye was the one fighting on the back foot but Wladimir was smart in that he would come forward but not recklessly and still give himself enough space to take a little step back when Haye would throw.

Yeah, he looks like a taller rangier Kimbo Slice the way he fights, terrible balance.
