I've watched a lot of Pulev. A couple of years ago I predicted that he would be the man to end the Klitchskos' dominance... Clearly I was wrong about that.

Even thought Wlad flattened him, he still is one of the top five Heavyweights in the world today - just because you lose to the Champ doesn't mean that you are a bum. And I do give Wladimir massive credit for taking the fight, even though it was an IBF Mandatory fight for him - he could've very easily dropped that title and he would still have been known as the clear number one Heavyweight, but he took the fight against the man was Boxrec ranked number two, and that's good enough for me.

I would find it refreshing if other Boxrec Number Ones fought the Number Twos, you would have fights like:

Light Heavyweight - Adonis Stevenson vs Sergey Kovalev
Middleweight - Gennady Golovkin vs Miguel Cotto
Welterweight - Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquaio

You have to say, there's not many boxing fans who would turn their back to watch those fights...

Datsue wrote:Pulev's probably the best of a bad bunch but no-one in the division is very far ahead of anyone else, VK apart. They're all separated by ickle degrees of shitness. They know they're all very similar/capable of losing to one another on any given day so are terrified of losing the initiative gained by a series of unthreatening wins.

Jennings has shown some ambition but I couldn't see him racking up more than two/three wins against the top ten before losing badly to someone. Fury's team aren't stupid neither, they know what they've got imo & have been reasonably happy (Tyson's bored-puppy-eating-the-sofa antics aside) with TF marking time whilst waiting for the Klits to fvck off.

Tyson as much as admitted to me that that's what they were gonna do with him back in 2012, it's just no-one predicted Wladdy would keep it going as long as he has--which is a result of the awfulness of the heavyweights in general.

Look at it this way: Fury's best win? Points over a fat, disinterested Chisora. Haye--"not a real heavyweight"/"fraud"/"coward" etc etc--knocks the ever-living shite out of Chisora. Haye was probably still the best heavy contender out there, but was content to play the game every heavy has: let's wait for the Klits to retire.

The awfulness of the division is not predicated on the fighters (they're mostly a bag of shite, but +watching two carthorses race can still be thrilling) but rather in the caution each of them has shown in refusing to fight their contemporaries, which is 'cos they all kinda know that doing so would make them definitively number one contender, then they would be in line for a focussed Klit thinking seriously about hurting them.

Which is basically what happened to Pulev. He strung a few wins together, talked himself up, & got horribly splattered for his trouble.
I think that is a consequence of everyone playing it safe for the last few years, hoping the Klits would both retire - well, they've got a wait yet for Wlad, and in the meantime, none of them are learning their trade by continuing to mark time fighting no marks.

Can you imagine Tua and Ibeabuchi going at it in this day and age - no way Jose.

Joshua isnt that great either though. He looks good against the opposition he's been in with so far but then most do when they're coming up.

Precisely, far too early to get excited about Joshua, let's see what happens when he fights someone who doesn't fall over after the first meaningful punch, or heaven forbid, hits him first.

I'll admit Joshua has many of the physical tools (I do worry about that Hulking frame though, reminds me a lot of Frank Bruno) but does he have the chin, the mental game, etc? Time will tell.

I get the reservations about Joshua but he has looked more impressive than any recent prospect against similar opposition.

People talk about Price being as impressive in his early fights but he wasn't. He laboured in a few early ones.

Joshua won't ever fight Wlad though. Wlad's physical attributes will wane and he will retire before Joshua reaches world title level.

It could be easy to forget though that Pulev for instance stopped Matt Skelton in his 5th fight. Just shows it doesnt mean a great deal when they eventually step up.

I think there's a slim chance of it happening - depends on how fast Joshua is moved - I think Wlad may well still be champ in 3 years time, barring injury, and if Joshua gets a bunch of fights under his belt, and is a big enough name, Wlad might go for it. Depends also on whether his team would rather wait Wlad out.

I think Joshua has all the tools but the jury's still out on him. I do think he'll make the grade when he steps up but no need to rush him as he still needs to add the finer nuances of boxing to his game and work on his repertoire of punches.

I do think he'll have ample stamina when it comes down to it. I know his big muscles have been a point of discussion. I've paraphrased this interesting post from a another forum:
Larger muscles are able to store more glycogen than smaller muscles. Glycogen is a type of stored fuel in a muscle that gives it muscular endurance. The greater the glycogen reserves that muscles have, the more muscular endurance the fighter will have. In fact, one of the reasons muscles grow larger through weight training is that the amount of glycogen reserves in the muscles increases, making the muscle larger. Of course that's not the only reason that weight training makes muscles grow but it's one reason and an important one when discussing muscular endurance.

The most intense parts of fights are anaerobic exercise, as opposed to aerobic exercise. In anaerobic exercise the muscles don't use oxygen as fuel; they first use their ATP reserves (adenosine triphosphate), and then use their glycogen reserves which give a fighter muscular endurance.

In the less intense parts of a fight there is aerobic work being done and then there is the issue of oxygen being used but this is the only type of endurance that is ever discussed. They never take into account the endurance that fighters have for anaerobic work, and anaerobic work is the hard, intense work; the type of work being done when pummeling an opponent with combinations on the ropes or exerting maximum force/power into a punch. These are a couple examples of the anaerobic work done in a fight, work done not with oxygen but with the fuel stored within the muscles - ATP and glycogen.

As for Pulev, he's probably not as good or as bad as some are making out on here. He did perform very poorly against Dr.Steelhammer but having watched a lot of his fights, he's generally better than that. But even on his best night, he'd never be a match for Klitschko. I agree in the 90's he probably wouldn't have even got a title shot due to falling short against one of the many decent contenders at the time like Razor Ruddock, Ray Mercer, Akinwande, Golota, Briggs(who used to be a very good, fast heavyweight) etc.

Hmmmmmm given the dearth of challengers (only Wilder and in 3 years Joshua seem to present a threat), Wlad could probably do 35 defences....

If he chooses correct,y he could do 5 defences in one night....

Maybe he could do UK Prizefighter and get the IBF/WBO/WBC/IBO to agree to sanction all three of his fights through the tournament. He'd probably pack out the York Hall. :TU: Get Eddie on the phone! :box:

He can't beat Joe Louis' record because Joe Louis defended the undisputed title 25 times.

Wladimir has to date defended the undisputed title 0 times.

If he can beat Stiverne (a fairly easy assignment) he can begin his attempt to beat the Brown Bomber's astonishing record.
