Liverpool card this weekend is stacked
Re: Liverpool card this weekend is stacked
I think Algieri will put up a pretty good fight; I think he'll get caught at some time but I think he'll impress a few with how he loses.

Oh sorry - I wasn't sure off the top of my head. It's still two world class (and one P4P) fighters though, and the undercard of Lomachenko, Zhou and Vargas makes it a far superior card to the PPV nonsense.chucktaylor wrote:It's not a unification b/c Algieri holds the WBO 140 title the fight is for Pac's WBO 147 title. Still a good fight either way.reggaereggae wrote:I can only assume you work for Hearn... This would be a 'stacked' card and one of the best this season in terms of depth; IF it wasn't PPV. But as it stands, for the TV subscriber it's a bloody ripoff. At least Algieri - PAC is a true world class fight and a unification (i think?)jujigatame wrote:Bellew vs. Cleverly

In my estimation this is more PPV worthy than the Pac/Algieri card. Particularly looking forward to Quigg/Otake which is a pretty big fight at 122.
Depending on ticket prices; might still be great value as a live event. I have no idea what they are though
Im a bit out of the loop on TV coverage; who is showing the PAC bill?
Re: Liverpool card this weekend is stacked
Was that a faux nieve question? It is of course BoxNotion who are showing the Pacman bill.

Don't agree. Lomachenko is in against a no-hoper and is Shiming really compelling to anyone? Also I wouldn't consider Algieri a world-class fighter any more than Quigg or DeGale or Groves.reggaereggae wrote: Oh sorry - I wasn't sure off the top of my head. Honestly both cards are a terrible value for PPV but if you offered me both for the same price I'd choose the UK card. The only reason I made this thread was because I get the UK card for free on US TV and wasn't aware anyone actually had to pay extra for it.
Re: Liverpool card this weekend is stacked
Card turned out largely how many thought it would....a shutout for the house fighters with no result in serious doubt for them. The main event was mediocre in my view and what to me seemed like the most competitive undercard fight on paper (Degale-Periban) was largely uncompetitive and stopped far too quickly. Groves-Doughlin was more competitive than I expected, but the ending was very predictable, and while Otake showed impressive toughness he was clearly well out of his depth and rightfully lost nearly every round.

Anyway I actually think Shouming looked great in one of the fights I saw (ordinary in the other). And Loma's opponent really isn't that bad, one loss I think?. Algieri may not be any better than Quigg, Degale or Groves, but hes a world champion and he is fighting Pac Man, not a journeyman.
PS even though I am not part of the community; am I the only one who thinks Algieri looks like a gay porn model????

Stoppages by British refs seem to be very premature. Today, I counted 3 premature stoppages -- in DeGale, Joshua and Groves fights. While DeGale and Joshua would have likely finished their opponents, refs still stopped these fights too soon. In Groves case, only about 15 seconds was left, and his opponent was on his feet throwing lazy punches back. Why not let him finish the round ?

I think the refs are not only scared to let a fight too long for health reasons; they are also in the pay of the promoter and so support the home fighter.
I think also its a reflection of how one sided a lot of Brit fights are; the know the other guy has no chance
Re: Liverpool card this weekend is stacked
I had it for Bellew.
I've always like Nathan and have a tremendous respect for the Welsh fighters.
For me and no disrespect to Cleverly, something isn't right with him.
It's not physical like his right hand didn't work because he threw the jab all night.
I think he lacks the fire in the belly.
Doesn't mean he isn't gutsy to stick it out, more means he doesn't have that extra gear to take it into deep waters and compete and that level.
Last time these two fought it was Bellew who wilted down the stretch, this time it was Cleverly.

Re: Liverpool card this weekend is stacked
Basically US fans were better off watching the UK card and vice versa, because neither were worth PPV money.
I actually had Bellew winning a pretty wide 117-111 decision. Cleverly practically fought one handed, throwing nothing but jabs for minutes at a time. Not only that but he faded badly down the stretch and was barely moving in the last 4 rounds. The judge who scored for Cleverly was out of his mind.
Periban definitely got stopped too early but he looked out of shape and DeGale would have gotten him out of there sooner or later, IMO.
Quigg looked good but Otake hung tougher than most thought he would and I thought he stole a round or two when he got aggressive.
Sprott was a bit of a joke, it's about time for Joshua to step up. I say match him with Tony Thompson and see if he can do what Price couldn't.

Re: Liverpool card this weekend is stacked
Just on Joshua, can anyone answer my question of why the Joshua vs sprott fight was a defence of Joshua's WBC International title up until 4 days before the bout, and weather the Johnson fight is likely to be a defence of this belt?
Thank you
Thank you
