Opinions on Johnathon Banks as Wlad's trainer

Post by cjdragon »

Hey guys I was just wondering what you thought about Johnathon Banks as Wlad Klitschko's trainer.
I will always miss the voice of Emanuel Steward between rounds of the fighter's he has trained over the years...but do you consider Banks to be a good trainer? Able to calm his fighter and/or wake him up, if needed, as Steward could do so well?
For example, If Wlad attempts something unusual and/or stupid from his perspective in a future fight (like pushing out his chin, or entering a pure slug-fest with a banger) will Banks be able to talk Wlad back down to his game plan?

Thanks :)

I think Wlad is disciplined and finally understands the style that will make him most effective. Therefore, he doesn't really need a trainer for any major strategic advice or focusing. He is what he is.

I think that when a good boxer who is talented and experienced get to this level (Hopkins, Klit,May) it doesn't really matter who their trainer is....

They just need someone to organise their fitness training and routine...l

Banks is not an elite trainer, but he is more qualified to continue Steward's training routine than most other trainers would be.

Also their mitts workout is quite impressive.

Banks has trained many years under Steward too. he will probably replicate the Trainings he received with Steward with wlad.

It is still early days on Banks but I reckon he could go along way when he calls time on his fighting career as he has been mentored well by Emmanuel Steward and Javon Hill.

As good as Wlad is.I can not complain about Banks as a trainer.
I would like to see some other fighters under him and see how they improve.
It is too early to make an accurate report of his skills as a trainer.

I thought he did a great job telling him what to do in that fight but in all honesty I think Wlad has learned more from Stewart and really doesn't need anyone

Agreed, Wlad is a veteran and seasoned enough, at this point, to know exactly what he needs to do for his preparation and his execution of his game plans. Banks was also trained by Emmanuel Steward, so they both understand the style and teachings of their late mentor. I don't thin that Wlad necessarily needs Banks, but it's always advantageous to have someone outside of the ring and looking at the fight from a different perspective than what Wlad is...

Awesome feedback, thanks guys.
It's odd to have an active fighter as a trainer, isn't it? Or maybe it hasn't always been that way?

My father finally watched the Klitschko - Pulev fight On Demand. Funny, he's now a Wlad fan :)

So I guess Wlad should get the #1 heavyweight in the world to be his trainer? It's too bad that he already is that guy. Should he get someone who is X-0 against Seth Mitchell to be his trainer, like Chris Arreola? Or does he just need to hire an undefeated fighter like Tyson Fury to train him? Would Roger Mayweather beat Seth Mitchell if they fought? Perhaps Roger Mayweather vs Seth Mitchell should be an eliminator, and the winner gets to train Wlad. I can actually think of a fighter right off the top of my head who beat Seth Mitchell, and that fighter is Johnathon Banks. OMG, WLAD SHOULD HIRE JOHNATHON BANKS TO BE HIS TRAINER!

Jonathan Banks as a protégé of Manny Steward is the perfect trainer for Wladimir.

They've been working together for nearly ten years now. I imagine Banks knows Wladimir as well as anybody.

well he certainly improved under Steward but I think at 38 years old his style is pretty much set.
