It could have gone either way, but I hate to admit that I think I agree with you. Pulev is bigger and has a better right hand, but I think Wepner had a much better jab and even moved his head. A little. And he had cement in his chin, which clearly Pulev does not.drunkenpiper36 wrote:I might go with Chuck by a narrow decision in a 10 round fight unless he gets badly cut early. The Great John L wrote:Pulev vs Wepner

I was half kidding when I responded, but who knows? Wepner wasn't half bad for a journeyman especially for being one in the 1970's. He was 6'5" and 225 for his bout with Ali and managed to sneak in a decent win here and there against a decent opponent. In all likelihood, Pulev probably wins. But the fact that we're giving Chuck a chance here says something about the current division. The Great John L wrote:It could have gone either way, but I hate to admit that I think I agree with you. I don't think Wepner was a very good fighter at all, but compared to Pulev he actually looks decent. Wepner was a club fighter who was given a shot at the brass ring. Pulev was a top contender, but has similar skill level to Wpener, but a much shakier chin. It's all relative.drunkenpiper36 wrote:I was half kidding when I responded, but who knows? Where does all the "shaky chin" stuff come from? The guy has only been down 5 legitimate times in his pro AND high level amateur career, and 4 of those came to Wlad. The other legitimate knockdown was as an amateur. That's not a shaky chin, that's getting hit on the button by a guy with crazy top ten all time power.

Wepner wasn't blessed with terrific skills but he'd be too tough and physical for Pulev, another European heavyweight fraud.
Re: Pulev is garbage; the HW div. is trash.
LOL.. Put Wepner in with Wlad and his chin would look like glass too. Pulev has a solid chin - he took a few flush bombs from Ustinov and stayed upright. Ustinov vs Wepner is more of a fight. Pulev would wipe the floor with Wepner. Crazy how even the old bums of yesterday get hype.

i think the division has been improving for two or
three years now. don't get blinded by the critics.
has always been like that, always will be: humans
glorify the past.

I liked Wepner. He was from my era, but think Pulev is a little better.
Re: Pulev is garbage; the HW div. is trash.
On pure boxing skills I'd give the edge to Wepner. They don't teach basic stuff now, like young ballplayers don't know how to bunt. Pulev is plenty tough, but to be knocked down by almost the first punch....The guy had been fighting level B and C heavies who know only jab-right hand. Anything more complicated and they get confused and trip over their own feet. Klitschko, Stiverne, Thompson, Povetkin and a few others have some actual boxing skills.

Chuck Wepner is a very tough guy no doubt. But if anyone believes that he would have a chance against any top 10 heavy now, they're smoking crack (and good crack too.)
Watch any of his fights on You tube, he's ridiculously basic and out of shape. He's a tough bar brawler and not a big one at that.
Wlad Ko 60 secs, or more likely anytime he decides to close the show
