Denton Daley/Youri Kalenga (unimportant cruiser belt)

Post by zorndeslammes »

Because I'm probably insane, I'm not going to the fight card in Detroit this weekend (Ray Edwards, former Minnesota Viking, fights at a VFW somewhere), but instead driving a few hours to Ontario to see this. Why not? Top ten ranking in the balance, relevance in a division full of quality fighters. I watched some of Daley, and I can see why Kalenga would be interesting to them. Kalenga is beyond raw - he fights like Sam Peter but punches more like Glen Johnson, which means he can easily be hit and isn't likely to light you up with one shot. But he's fought a guy at the next level in Masternak, and Daley's never even glanced in that direction. His best wins are against 4th rate trial horses and the shell of Richard Hall. There's a lot of interesting storylines in this one, and I'm definitely interested to see it. Anyone else?

I live in Toronto, and I was considering going to this fight, but decided not to, plus plans happened etc. Denton Daley is a decent boxer, I'm not sure however that he's gonna be able to deal with Kalenga, but if he does it would be nice to have a Canadian owning a WBA belt, even though an interim one. Maybe Lebedev fights the winner of this fight.

Daley will spark Kalenga. Probably too late to get tickets for this card at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga. Nearly sold out last time.

Interesting fight. Daley has not faced great opposition thus far and this is a step up. This fight will tell us something about Daley. If Kalenga wins, it really doesn't prove anything by beating a relatively untested prospect.

Kalenga beat the tar out of him. Should have been stopped after the 9th or 10th. I was worried Daley was hurt bad. Franjic got one punch ko'ed too by a nobody in a fight he was dominating. Not a lot of smiles from the fans in attendance.

Daley was untested and the outcome proves it. Kalenga didn't prove he's ready for Lebedev by beating Daley.

Just saw the last round of Daley-Kalenga....the ref did a horrible job. Daley was clearly out of it when he went down the second time and just sat there, and there was no reason to let him take those final shots.

Daley hit him with his best righthands and didn't even slow him down. He wasn't ready for Kalenga, but maybe never will be. Kalenga looked like he outweighed Daley by 20 or 30 pounds. Optical illusion?

I felt the ref and Daley's corner did a major disservice by allowing him to go into round 12 with absolutely no legs left (he showed NOTHING positive after that knockdown in round 9 and barely finished round 11). He's lucky he didn't get seriously injured.

Daley is a decent athlete... But really a limited, non physically gifted novice fighter. How and where these guys get it into their heads that they are good enough to turn professional is ridiculous. Sydney Vanderpool, his current coach was a talented, skilled, well-schooled amateur boxer who went on to an EXCELLENT pro career, probably even over-achieved as a pro. Syd, with a month of training would KO/dominate DALEY....
Professional fighter... FFS... Get real.

Daley is 32. So it was turn pro when he did or forget it. Another case of a guy taking up the sport at an age when he should already have 20 or more fights under his belt. Much as I like Daley, he certainly seems to lack the thunder in his punches to be a force in the cruiserweight class. Either that or Kalenga has a cast-iron jaw. I'd be curious to know what they actually weighed at ringside. Kalenga looked massive next to the Canadian.
