Early Calzaghe-Lacy betting

They've started going up the past couple of days. Obviously opinion on who wins this is extremely divided, and there will be threads, inc http://www.boxrec.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=37404 which will show all the arguments for and against

For me personally though, I reckon that Calzaghe, whilst he has/once had huge talent in abundance, this has been hampered by the poor quality of his opponent and the mindset ruck that he could potentially be in after all these fights in the passed few years. So whilst it's no formality, early prices from Ladbrokes and Stanjames offering 11/10 for Lacy is pretty good (both offering Joe at 4/6 as a consequence.) If this is pushed out at all in the coming weeks it's a v. good bet in my crappy opinion.

Incidentally, the Skelton-Williams fight is roughly looking like being 2/5 Skelton and 5/2 Williams. I wouldn't back Skelton at those odds, but if Danny puts in a similar performance for this as he did against Audley Hepburn, Skelton will win.

I'm surprised by those odds. 11/10 Lacy definitely represents good value, in a fight where I make him the favourite. I'll have a few quid on at those odds, and then spend the winnings at Cheltenham the week after.

I wonder what odds the Yank bookmakers are offering?

How can Ladbrokes and Stanjames favour Lacy yet? He's hardly done much to be considered favourite.

They aren't favouring Lacy..

They have Calzaghe as the favourite at 4/6 and Lacy as the underdog at 11/10

Nelson looks quite good at 1/1 IMO (Enzo is 1/1 also)

When u come to think of it what has lacy done to date? I mean I give him a very good chance against calzone but lets face it - his best win to date is against robin reid and if u saw the magee fight u will know reid was/is well past it (he looked awful in that fight IMO). And u cant tell me calzone, as poor as opposition as been lately, wudnt have done a similar job on poor old scott pemberton? I agree with the bookies and make calzaghe favourite. I reckon he probably outbox lacy to a UD. Another point, I reckon lacy's power is somewhat overrated - he is obviously very strong but dont think ive ever see him knock someone out sparkko (pemberton doesnt count!

) its usw his strength and pressure that do the job ala robin reid and rubin williams.

i agree lacy hasn't fought much. however he's looked impressive against the fighters he has fought.

syd vanderpool is as good as anyone calzaghe has fought in his title reign i'd say and lacy impressively got him out in 8 rds.

lacy has weaknesses and lacks the rhythm to his style that say hatton has. but don't right this kid off cos of that.

Ive watched tapes of both fighters.

In a war, I think Joe Stops him, with both men going down.

Does anyone think that hand injury could of been faked to sell the fight? Either one of them might of wanted a later date.

agree lacy hasn't fought much. however he's looked impressive against the fighters he has fought.

Joe looks impressive too against who he fights except he doesn't need biased refs.

Bookies usualy have it about right don't they - and I'm with them on this one. Lacy looks overrated to me - all the talk of him hitting like Tyson seems a bit optomistic.

In a big fight like this, by comparison, Joe has been there and done it all - I reckon he has too much for Lacy - and how good is Lacy's chin? We'll soon know....he was KO'd a few times as an amateur I hear ( by Allan Green? )

What one could do is pop a bet on the exchanges - put up some odds, really silly ones, and see if you get a nibble. There's plenty of mug punters out there so you never know.

On betfair by left clicking on the team/horse/dog/person you can see how their odds have changed, and you often see things getting backed/laid for some pretty odd prices at first before the betting settles down (and comes into line with other bookies) nearer the event.

For example, in the darts last night, Kevin Painter started his match against Phil Taylor as an 11 or 12 to 1 underdog, but he'd been an 18 to 1 underdog earlier in the betting - someone obviously put up a silly price and someone obviously took it.
