Nicky Piper.
Nicky Piper.
Congratulations to Nicky Piper on being honoured with an MBE at New Years Honours list.
Not sure if it is most deserving, it is though to services to Sport and mainly due to his role with the BBBoC, as opposed to his boxing prowess.
Whilst, I personally can think of much more worthy boxers who have yet to be honoured, I certainly think it was more worthy in the ring than Jawid Khaliq, who received an honour last year. Oh yeah, and Audley Harrison.
I'm not sure quite how this system works and eligability but I would like to see the following receive honours.
Jim Watt.
Barry McGuigan - he has an MBE, but I would like to see him with a Knighthood in the near future.
Nigel Benn.
Chris Eubank.
Lennox Lewis - again I feel he should receive a knighthood.
There are a host of other fighters who I am not sure have been honoured or not - the likes of Ken Buchannon etc.
Also think some broadcasters/journo's are worthy for their contribution over the years.
Sir Harry Carpenter is one I think that is deserving.

Cricket always seems to be the main ones that get awards, i'm not saying that the Ashes team didn't deserve there award, but they do get a chance to win the ashes every 2 years, A boxer like Ricky Hatton may just get the 1 chance to beat the best, luckily he took the chance.
Boxers don't seem to be made Knights very often,

I suppose its got something to do with boxing being a working class sport and Cricket not so.
Perhaps they worry that guys like Benn might say or do something out of line in the awards ceremony.
Henry Cooper had a more "stiff upper lip" style, you knew it was highly unlikely he would say something out of place. I would say Piper certainly fits into this category.
The Ashes team did not deserve the awards, well not all the team. Some only participated a little bit and were hardly influencial players. Same with the England Rugby team.
They should wait untill they achieve some other accolades.... Maybe Vaughan and Fletcher (although, I didn't think he was eligable).... but the rest? Look how long it took the 1966 world cup team to all win awards.

True, I can't see why if they thought the Whole of the Ashes Team were worthy, then why have they not given the British players at Liverpool something for winning the Champions League.KOJOE90 wrote:That's my take on the situation.stujones wrote:I suppose its got something to do with boxing being a working class sport and Cricket not so.
Would have thought at least Gerrard would have got something for his leadership that night

Bit in one of the papers yesterday they were citing Stephen Gerrard as being woefully overlooked, but you can put Hatton in his place, when you consider that Paul Collingwood (is this the right guy? J?) played about 3 hours in one test or something and got his MBE with the rest. Now, I know you can't just shut him out as it was a team thing but still, there is a point to be made there somewhere.
Anyway, I'm going to bed.
I wouldn't like to bet who get's an honour first - Hatton or Khan

He probably convinced the Queen to part with an award via a Piper Mind Meld, Mr Spock style.

Yeah i think that proves that looks can be decieving, Piper has proved his toughness in fights against the likes of Leeonzer Barber, in that one he only had to stay out the way for another round or 2 and Barber would have been stopped because of a huge swelling around his eye, unfortunatly Piper walked into one and was knocked out.steve689 wrote:Nicky Piper always looks like the world's most unconvincing Boxer to me, he seems like the type of fella who works behind a desk on computers or something.
he also hung in there with a prime Benn for 11 rounds, gave as good as he got for alot of the rounds in that one.
Piper was involved in one of the fights of 1994 , when he went in the Crawford Ashley , both boxers fought themselves to a standstill that night.
A knockout win over Bruce Scott shows that kind of power Piper had as well.

Yet Gareth Thomas should get one, for being the Lions captain (only due to BOD's injury) on an unsuccessful Lions tour? Part of a team that won the weakest ever Six-Nations?, and a Toulouse player?
Sorry Stu, but only a Welshman could make posts like that....
Well, as and when Thomas retires it'd be nice to see him get some recognition.
But fundamentally these guys are now ALL professionals and as such are just doing their jobs. They happen to get paid well (in a large number of cases) for doing so and get feted by the general populace. I'm much more in favour of the 'everyday heroes' getting the gongs.
Tom Jones? Did he really get his chest wig out and shag his way around the English-speaking world for the sake of Queen and Country, album royalties and concert ticket sales be damned?
The England cricket team? Fair play, they did something pretty special, but have the Aussies been routinely given smiley face stickers for winning the Ashes every other ruddy time? They are, after all, members of the Empire...
These honours should be for people who go above and beyond for the sake of other people, or whose primary goal is the significant advancement of a cause / sport / etc. Or who achieve for the sake of achieving, rather than the financial rewards - Edmund Hilary, for example.
In sport, nowadays, I think we're looking at the administrators, officials, etc as nowadays being more worthy of an honour, assuming their primary activities do not include extensive work with sick and / or needy kiddies.
Anyway, who's for the 'Arise, Sir Micky Vann' campaign?

You can edit my post as much as you want. I was stating the some of the squad (possibly most of it) didn't deserve honours. Some didn't even play at all - yet get awarded. When did George Cohen get his honour - and he played in the world cup final. Give it to the 15 starters of the final, and the players that played more than 2 games - but the whole squad and coaching staff?Loftgroov wrote:They won the World Cup!!??stujones wrote:ISame with the England Rugby team.

When you look at Rugby players who have got awards, that every Rugby player that has recieved an honour deserves it in comparison to Gareth Thomas. Forgot to add Welsh record try scorer - yet, Ieuan Evans has an MBE - Thomas broke his record and has achieved more than him.
Oh yeah, of course the likes of Dorien West is more worthy... only a Englishman would think so.
Sure honour the likes of Wilkinson, Johnson, Dawson, Bracken (for 50 caps), Back, Hill, Leonard and maybe one or two others with OBE/CBE's - but the entire squad with MBE's. Sorry, didn't agree.
My views are the same with the Cricket and would be the same if Wales did anything of world wide in any tornament.

Re: Nicky Piper.
Yep, in a devision that was so devoid of talent - they contemplating scrapping it. With the help of a horrible stoppage some 20 seconds away from losing in the first round (of the competition, not of the contest). Then had a buy and was fully expected to win the other contests.Loftgroov wrote:Harrison won an Olympic Gold Medal... representing Britain?stujones wrote:

Amir Khan's accomplishment was MUCH better.
I just think it shouldn't be honoured that year - and it my view of Gareth Thomas, but as they are already doing it - why not Thomas. Look how bad that honour looks now..
Look how, in hindsight, the "accomplishments" of some of the England Rugby team (including "Sir" Clive). Think "Sir" Alex Ferguson was also premature. Same with the Cricket team and their performance in Pakistan.
Trevor Woodman, services to Rugby, but has now retired and hardly played after the RWC. Danny Grewcock has disgraced the game with some of his disicipline problems, and Ian Balshaw has been a liability for you guys.
