what we learned from last nights boxing!!!!

Post by mullenman »

The Excel is an awful venue for boxing
The fights went on to late for the people that had to get trains
The schedualing of the fights was way off
A good card on paper does not mean a good nights boxing.
Tyson Fury is a very good heavyweight when he sticks to a plan
Del Boy is a gate keeper and there was something wrong with him last night (we'll find out soon)
BJS and Eubank was a very good fight and could even be better next time
Mitchell Smith is a hype job and stunk the place out and I hope i never see him box on PRIME TIME TV AGAIN
Buglioni is exciting but will get KO'd again when steps up in level as he was in trouble against a middleweight last night
Skeete is a negative fighter and Frankie is no world beater like in the amatuers
Liam Walsh was impressive and should kick on now.

overall very dissapointing nights boxing but it was a top class card on paper

Golovkin would probably do the same to Saunders to be fair.

yes to all of the above and that Chris Eubank sr is a flawed judge he may well of lost that fight for his son by overmatching him too early and as for beating Golovkin that was simply a stupid thing to say I hope he realises what a prick he has made of himself.
Also Chisora is finished as a serious contender.

But better than most gave him credit for prior to the fight.

What is not in dispute is that the lad just gave BJS his toughest and most competitive fight. He aint all bad. Just needs to develop the jab and round off his edges. Great strength and engine.

Ps Boxing is a lot to do with psychology and hype. Did he or his father really believe that he would be as good as Floyd Mayweather or Ray Leonard? Or course not, but it gets people talking.

Great performance from the lad considering how many unknowns he was tackling coming into that fight.

I couldn't believe Eubank Sr's behaviour last night. I've always had a lot of respect for him, and I always saw his posturing in the ring as a way of enhancing his profile, at the cost of his own likeability.

It seems to me that the primary objective of the Eubank corner was to provide a stage for Sr to get himself back in front of a large TV audience.
The small matter of providing any kind of strategic advice to Jr was not a priority.

Saunders fought well, and I think he would have won whatever the situation in Eubanks corner.
But I hope that Sr feels like a dick today. Jr should not feel too discouraged, he will come back stronger if he learns the lessons of last nights defeat, he has the tools to be a champion.

I thought that the entire corner was pretty useless, Ronnie Davis' advice consisted seemingly of 'go aaaart there and smash the faaack aaaat of him' hardly the most enlighted or constructive advice.

It did also seem to me though, that Eubank Jr was pretty much ignoring whatever was said to him, he barely acknowledged anything that was said to him.

Eubank Sr, for all his pomp and arrogance, listened to his corner, but it does seem that Jr, despite having very little amateur pedigree or experience, thinks he knows best.

I thought Saunders won quite clearly, I had him by 3 rounds, Jr literally threw away the 1st half of the fight.

I have serious doubts that Jr can make a real impact at beyond domestic level, he looked very amateurish last night, and very one dimensional, there's a huge amount of work to be done, and I'm not sure he has the right mental makeup to learn.

Hopefully, after last night, he will realise how much work he needs to do to progress.

I long considered Eubank Snr to be a very self-absorbed idiot.

His aloofness cost his son his unbeaten record.

Posturing, being cocky and creating a name might increase your profile - but amongst all of that, someone forgot that 'punches' actually win fights !

I notice Jnr doesn't follow anyone on twitter, he might be wise to start following a few trainers.

I thought Jones and Rawling were a bit harsh with their treatment of Eubank Snr - yes, he is a "persona" but it was almost like they were forgetting what experience he has also. Jones was harping on about why they don't utlise Davis or Sanigar - lets not forget Daddy had 19 world title wins in his career.

I think Daddy takes the psychology of the sport maybe a bit too seriously, I don't blame him it did him an awful lot of good during his career. However, with all the "average Joe" and performances in the corner in previous fights, when Son has been dominating.... I think Daddy thought the he couldn't really revert to panic mode in the opening stages (when they should have done) because Tibbs/Saunders would have had the upper hand psychologically.

I agree entirely with what James McDonnell is saying, I'm just thinking of explanations as to "why" Daddy behaved like he did. To Daddy's credit when he started talking to his son, he was calm and his son did kick on and won most of the rounds, just Daddy was too busy trying to outpsych the other corner by not even talking to his son, to give the impression it's all part of the plan. Maybe he needs daddy to be in the corner at all times and not three of them in a state of confusion, cos Daddy's advice was decent when he actually spoke boxing - Davies' advice was hardly brilliant "knock his block off". However, Daddy needs to be not focusing too much on outpsyching the opponent and focus on his boy.

I think the history between Team Eubank and the Tibbs' was a critical element of the fight.

we learnt that, much as team eubank are good value, chris needs to change trainers and drop his father from the team, only then will he progress. he does have raw talent but it needs channelling in the right direction.

What you said about Chisora we all knew before last night.

Chisora has never been anything more than a bang average gatekeeper that loses every time he steps up in class; that's what's wrong with him.

I learnt that Eubank Jr has inherited his father's lack of urgency at times.

Senior lost to Carl Thompson the first time round for this reason & if Junior doesn't drop this bad habit, he is going to lose more times than he ought to.

The Buglioni and Smith fight should never have been shown when they did, spoilt the flow of the evening. No British card needs so many fights the main event goes on at nearly 1am and then turns out to be a bore.

After all the hype and postponements the Fury fight left a lot to be desired.

The Buglioni fight was a decent one. I think the Mitchell and Gavin fights were the problem. Light punching fights. Terrible viewing.

I'll second that and add he needs to drop the big arrogant I AM attitude asap - i suspect it will hinder his progress just as much as his current team setup.

I think if Eubank Jr can learn to jab, instead of just winding up big shots then he can go onto European level at least.

However the set up of his team just looks wrong at the moment. Eubank Sr and Davies dont look to have a particularly good working relationship.

It wont happen but I would love to see McCracken train Eubank, as I dont think Froch and Eubanks fighting style is massively different.

I was impressed with BJS at times, he showed he was the superior boxer and deservedly won the fight, I was surprised it was a split. I had him two rounds to the good at least.

I fear BJS lacks the power at World Level but time will tell and we should find out next year.

my first post so please be gentle!!

Absolutely agree, Excel centre is awful, what was they thinking putting fights on so late that there was NO trains, no wonder Chisora and Fury's fight was quiet, hardly anyone was watching.
The security was awful, nothing is geared up for boxing at the Excel
I have attended boxing matches before and I will NEVER return to the Excel again, very dissapointed with the whole experience. and to top it of £65 for a cab home, gutted

A very good round up. I also would add:

- BJS is a small middle. Can he get down to Lt Middle?
- when Fury trains hard and concentrates he is a good heavy
- if Gavin got a proper strength and nutrition coach he would be way bette

BJS and Eubank will be lucky to claim a world title between them. BJS has stamina issues (something already known I guess) and Eubank's power isn't what it was hyped up to be.

Already posted my thoughts last night and we agree on most.
broomy7s wrote:My thoughts on tonight and what I learnt.

That the excel is an awful venue for boxing.
allegedly allegedly sells internet jorno's seats.
Walsh can push on to european level.
Buglioni is the liverpool fc of the boxing world.
Smith was showboating why?
Gavin isn't going beyond european level sadly.
Bjs is.
Eubank jnr needs a proper trainer and he can come again.
Fury didn't break sweat and showed some skills but not much power.
Chisora is the gate keeper. Maybe a good opponent for Price next.

Cannot disagree with any of that.

I agree about what’s been said about the ExCel. It is totally unsuitable for an event of this type. The PA was completely inaudible from where I was sitting (£50 seats) as if no-one had bothered to do a soundcheck – it was just a muffled noise. The toilets were a good walk away from the hall itself, one of which had flooded, the toilet hadn’t been closed off or mopped up and so people were wading through urine. There was no guidance on the ticket about which entrance to use so we had to walk around the whole arena to get to our seats, the stewards were given a map of the arena, pointed people towards their block and then it was a case of “your on your own now” to find your seat number as they didn’t seem to know the seating numbers of each block they were stewarding – this caused problems later on when people couldn’t find their own seats or someone else was already sitting in them. I saw Frankie Gavin and his trainer queuing to get in with the public at a very busy entrance. At the early fights there was no partition for where the boxers came out so they were brushing past the public or waiting for them to pass on their way to the ring or back from the dressing room. At the end of the night I heard one steward say to another that he hadn’t seen his supervisor all day nor had he had a break all day. The stewards were obviously temps that had been brought in for a day’s work with no guidance or proper training on how to actually do their job – I’m not blaming them at all – it’s a very shoddy way to treat employees and, for that matter, the paying public. If any serious problem like a fire or crowd trouble had broken out God only knows what would have happened.

The scheduling of the fights, as has already been stated, was very poor. The main event really should be earlier – I thought this lesson would have been learned from the Copper Box last year when one of the best fights I have seen live (BJS v Ryder) was on far too late. The car park was a nightmare to get out of even though a sizable proportion of the crowd had already left – no sign of any stewards or police directing the traffic. I feel sorry for those punters that wanted to watch the card to the end but were travelling by public transport – I doubt if they would have got a tube at that time in the morning.
I finally got home to the Midlands at 5:15 this morning.

All of that said, credit to the boxers – there was some cracking fights last night but the promoters and organisers should not be treating their customers like this because at best shockingly unprofessional and at worst it’s downright negligent and dangerous.
