Eubanks corner and advice (or lack of)

Post by Controversial »

What are people's opinion of the lack of advice from his corner? After round 1 all his dad could say was bend your legs when you sit down (eh!!!)

Even late in the fight after it was clear he was losing all Ronnie Davis could say was something along the lines of bust him up.

Considering he had never been past 8 rounds before and was in a title fight against an unbeaten quality opponent the lack of advice was bizarre. What do you reckon?

I have said this on a couple of threads, the dynamic of the team is well off.

I am unconvinced on Ronnie Davies as a trainer, some of his advice (when he was allowed to talk) was odd. Eubank Sr comes across like he loves the fame far more than he cares about being a good trainer/coach for his son.

I feel if Eubank Jr goes with another trainer and maybe Sr takes a backseat then he definitely has potential. In terms of how far it remains to be seen, he throws a lot of wild punches and doesnt use his jab anywhere near enough.

ALSO

Eubank Sr appears to be an absolute nightmare to work with, which will put off promoters from working with Jr.

The whole no show to press conferences is not acceptable, and the £50,000 escrow was a joke.

Ive got a lot of respect for what Ronnie Davies has achieved in the game but corner men need to be in control of their corner,it seems he's just a yes man and someone to do the dirty work behind the scenes and in the training camp while daddy can turn up for the bright lights and take the plaudits

Amateurish corner work all round, and you wont find another trainer in the world who would allow that to happen(unless they too are yes men)

If Sr feels that he needs to be there in the corner in between rounds he cant be very happy with Jr's progress or Davies cornerwork because he's only recently started doing it

It still astounds me to see a corner in disseray in between rounds in proifessional boxing, especially when youve got 3 voices in the corner shouting over the trainer,i loss a lot of respect for trainers when they allow that to happen

This confirms that Eubank Sr loves the limelight far too much.

He used to just sit ringside and between rounds he'd kind of stand beside the ring stroking his chin looking awkward
This confirms that Eubank Sr loves the limelight far too much.

I think this was in response to Eubank Jnr telling him to stop talking, not Snr.

If they don't want to come to the press conferences, I don't see a problem, but to give the impression they were going to be there, then not show up, is plain disrespectful.

But why should they not turn up to press conferences?

It has been said a few times but if it is good enough for Mayweather Jr then it is good enough for Eubank Jr.

It's part of the business, whether you like it or not.

If you want the big money that boxing has at the higher levels of the sport you have to do the leg work of promoting a fight.

I dont know if ditching his idiotic father will help his career.
He seems an arrogant knowall who doesnt listen to anyone.
Ronnie Davies is an imbecile ......his inter round advice confirms that.
If jnr. is ever going to make a name for HIMSELF he has got to dump the pair of them and get a proper trainer....like Jimmy Tibbs and LISTEN AND TAKE NOTICE what they are saying.

The training team have made far too much of Eubank Jnr being a natural fighter; they should know above most that boxing is a learned skill and that the person boxing may well miss important aspects of what is going wrong and what is working, the trainers outside of the ring are there to give their considered opinion - if the boxer does not see the need for them then he is obviously a fool. If the corner men have so little of substance to say or they are enjoying the limelight themselves then they are fools. Boxing really is a dangerous sport and fools can get someone badly hurt.

im sick of reading the same topic but in different threads, so each time i see the same topic from now on im going to give a different reply.

Eubank Sr was great. how on earth can you say that the corner was not (lack of) giving good advice. I have seen thousands of fights and Ronnie Davies gave a great display or corner work. Infact I would go as far as saying that Davies is the best trainer since Nike lace ups, 1970's version with the red tick. But if you want to argue with trainers Fila arent too bad and dunlop make great tennis trainers.

Apart from Eubank who did Davies train? I asked before and as I remember I think Tony Oakey and Neil Linford for a short period but no one else of note.

Sometimes a trainer only fits with one fighter though. Kevin Rooney with Tyson for example. I remember seeing him train Vinny Paz like he was Tyson. It was terrible.

Davies said it, all his years of boxing training to come up with that advice !!!

I'm not sure what the Eubanks are trying to do. I wonder if Davies is just there to try and recreate the corner of yesteryear and he has little input into the training or tactics. I thought it was quite disrespectful of Jnr to say he didn't need anyone to tell him what to do, he fought his own fight and didn't need help. Such arrogance. He needs someone to keep him in check, his dad clearly thinks the sun shines out of his a**e and Davies just seems to be a glorified bucket carrier. Maybe this loss will make them rethink things.

there's a slight unease in the air there. The lad has probably had a gutful of the old fella strutting about and telling him this and that. Eubank had a hard taskmasker of a Dad himself, according to his own book. I'm sure it'll all work out in time. I think this is why Chris kept his advice to concise, calm bursts.

I thought the letter that Eubank presented to his son on the day of the fight was brilliant. Really spot on advice. It was read out during the fight....... (begs the question did Chris have a spare copy and ask them to keep it secret til after the bell :-? ) Also the fact he needed to put his advice in a letter maybe lends weight to my first point.

I thought (is it Ronnie Davies the trainer??) I thought the advice was sound. It wasn't rocket science that Chris Jr needed to get in there and be more active.

I'd have thought Chris would be better off in there in trackie bottoms and tee-shirt, but he's not gonna change now. I think having that kind of experience in your camp must be absolutely brilliant tbh.

In fairness to the corner, it was Jr himself who didnt put the foot down until round 6. They were certainly asking him to be more active. The corner can only do so much and he more than held his own for the remaining 7 rounds. Any more than one or two bits of advice doesnt work, look at some of the trainers out there waffling pish for the full 60 secs, achieves fvck all.

He came pretty close to beating a much more experienced, world level operator. I thought he did ok.

Anyway, every fighter is different, maybe it works for him, maybe it doesn't, it's hard to tell unless you are very close to the camp. The lack of obvious respect for Davies doesnt look good though. There again I was never convinced Sr was listening that hard to him on plenty of occasions back in the day... :D

I guess we'll find out in time. Cant see him changing trainers anyway tbh so its really a moot point.
