Chagaev vs Fury????
Would a Fury vs Chagaev match up be a good tune up for Fury?
This would be for the B-S WBA regular championship.Would gaining this meaningless strap
make a bigger payday when negotiations start for Wlad VS Fury?
I think that Chagaev poses no risk but a big reward for Fury.
Thoughts????

Re: Chagaev vs Fury????
Sure, decent match up. Chagaev is tough but I imagine Fury would deal with him these days and win on points.
Re: Chagaev vs Fury????
Good idea, I like that as a tune up
Chagaev isn't a total pushover, won 6 in a row, has experience against tall opponents (Valuev), but won't likely pose too much of a threat to Fury.

Re: Chagaev vs Fury????
It would be a good tune up yes, but I can see nothing other than a points win for Fury.
I would like to see Fury fight Bryant Jennings next, it would do him good to beat an American, and increase his Global reputation. As much as I don't like him, he has never aimed for the BS belts, and has been calling out Klitschko for a long time. Perhaps a best out of three fights battle against Shannon Briggs. First fight at a restaurant, the next at the shopping mall, and the final at a rival boxer's gym.

I can not see Jenning's camp taking a Fury fight. He is already highly rated and is just in a waiting game.Batley18 wrote:It would be a good tune up yes, but I can see nothing other than a points win for Fury.

I think he is one of the weaker contenders and poses no real threat to anyone in the top 5.Fury included.
Re: Chagaev vs Fury????
Chagaev's about 6 inches shorter than Wlad and winning the WBA regular belt would lose Tyson his WBO mandatory slot and therefore his shot at Wlad. Throw in that Chagaev has hepatitis, so I doubt he would pass the medical and they're not stupid enough to go out there to fight him and it's a non starter I'm afraid.

Better matchup than I would expect for Fury's stay-busy fight before he fights Wlad. I would have expected someone like Leapai.
Re: Chagaev vs Fury????
Good points. Any suggestions who he should fight instead?expe wrote:Chagaev's about 6 inches shorter than Wlad and winning the WBA regular belt would lose Tyson his WBO mandatory slot and therefore his shot at Wlad. He would lose his WBO mandatory but gain the WBA mandatory. Not only that but Wlad could wait until 2016expe wrote:Chagaev's about 6 inches shorter than Wlad and winning the WBA regular belt would lose Tyson his WBO mandatory slot and therefore his shot at Wlad. too fight Fury as it sits.Numerous commissions would sanction Chagaev to fight. So the point is moot.
It would be a stay busy fight and could be a big HBO fight.Anything to get Fury some much needed American exposure
to make Fury Wlad a PPV fight.
Re: Chagaev vs Fury????
Someone similar in height and build to Wlad, enough to present some threat to him, enough for him to be motivated and train properly, but without being a major danger, I certainly wouldn't be throwing him in with a puncher at this stage.Gnome wrote:Good points. Re: Chagaev vs Fury????
I don't think Fury will risk anything against a Ustinov or Chagaev. I hope I am wrong.
Shutting Shannon Briggs mouth would be too good to be true.
My guess, if he actually does fight in February, it will be against a low risk opponent like Rossy, Molina, or Darnell Wilson.

Re: Chagaev vs Fury????
The WBA are useless when it comes to enforcing mandatories, especially with super champions, he'd be waiting forever to get a shot. Wlad's allowed a voluntary, then he has to fight Tyson, or vacate the WBO belt, the fight will happen June-September. The British Boxing Board of Control will not license Chagaev if he has hepatitis, Fury's fighting February 28th at the O2 Arena, the money for the fight Klitschko fight is here and in Germany, it will be on HBO as part of Wlad's deal with them, I can't see them making a fight between a German based Ukrainian and an English/Irishman, that's likely to take place in Germany, a PPV in the US.tiny_acres wrote:He would lose his WBO mandatory but gain the WBA mandatory. Not only that but Wlad could wait until 2016expe wrote:Chagaev's about 6 inches shorter than Wlad and winning the WBA regular belt would lose Tyson his WBO mandatory slot and therefore his shot at Wlad. Those two would be near the top of my list, Mariusz Wach would be another option.Gnome wrote:Pianeta? I hope you're right. Fury had done all his training for Chisora when Derek pulled-out and replacement Ustinov and Fury even had a weigh-in. It begs the question of whether Fury saw Ustinov as a threat then?
I realize Fury was depressed over his uncle's sickness. But if there was no threat, you'd think Fury would have grabbed the money and engaged in the <36 minute workout.
In the real world spouses get sick and die and people work thru 8-10 hour shifts. Like I said I hope you're right, Fury-Ustinov would be a good tuneup match.

You're forgetting Fury's wife had a miscarriage. I think he made the smart business decision of not risking his marketability as an undefeated big mouth against a big unknown he didn't train for. If he had a full camp for Ustinov, I'm sure he'd fight him. The same true for anyone really; like him or not, Fury is a fighting man and doesn't seem to want to avoid anyone. Management is another story altogether.
Re: Chagaev vs Fury????
Fury, will be hard to stop and will be on top for many years to come future HOF!
Re: Chagaev vs Fury????
If you look at Wlads last fights:
15/11/2014 - Pulev (IBF mandatory)
26/04/2014 - Leapai (WBO mandatory)
05/10/2013 - Povetkin (WBA Defense)
The WBA title is the next one that will most likely be up for defending, but who knows.
Fury's team is saying that WBO is going to force him to defend in late summer, but Klitschko defended WBO this year, plus he has held the belt for 6 years, and defended it many times, I'm sure they would be fine extending the date of the fight.
Getting the WBA regular belt could be a pretty good idea, but honestly Chagaev isn't the type of fighter that Tyson should be fighting before Klitschko. He should be fighting somebody with the same type of size of Klitschko so he can get used to being in the ring with a big man. He could fight some high rated WBO fighters like Charles Martin or ideally David Price.

Re: Chagaev vs Fury????
Will not happen... Fury must face someone ranked in the top ten by the WBO, or else he will lose his #1 contender status... remember when he was to face Pulev in the #1 IBF eliminator, and he opted to fight Haye instead?... and him criticizing the WBC?... in order to get Klitschko (for sure) he has to fight a top ten ranked man in the WBO... or someone who is a complete non-factor in all the 4 organisations.
Which makes me think, possibly, the February opponent may be someone of the European-WBO stock and it be a "defense" of Fury's European belt--- could be David Price (#9 by the WBO) or someone in the top 10-15 EBU ratings such as Anthony Joshua (#8 EBU October 2014) or Alexander Ustinov (#18 October 2014) or Denis Boytsov (#5 October 2014).
However, I will admit, I would perfer if Fury did face someone like Chagaev, so that the Klitschko fight would be a WBO/WBA unifier--- but after all, this is boxing, the WBA will not allow that to happen because more money is to be made with the WBA title fractured as it is, than having it unified.

Re: Chagaev vs Fury????
Chagaev loses. Badly.
Re: Chagaev vs Fury????
As much as i am embarrassed to suggest him... How about Michael Grant?
He is big, powerful & athletic but not very good so he could perhaps present a Klitschko size non-threat.
I want to make this disclaimer before i take any abuse - I haven't seen Grant since he fought Adamek which i have just seen was 4 years ago. I hadn't seen him for a about 10 years before that but he didn't seem to have changed - no worse & no better. So if he's the same as he was then i'd say why not for a keep busy fight.
Ahem.

fury needs to fight christian hammer, good fight
Re: Chagaev vs Fury????
I agree that Fury should probably keep busy, since he has no idea how long it will be before Wlad gets around to fighting him. It wouldn't do him any benefit to wait 16 months or something for Wlad to fight Jennings and then finally get around to fighting Fury.
I agree that Fury's best tune-up opportunities are against the bigger fighters like Tony Thompson, David Price, Alexander Ustinov, Mariusz Wach, etc.. Although, if you're going to fight Wach, you better keep your eyes on him non-stop, because he's the filthiest f*cking cheater there is, and forget about him actually passing the post-fight drug test. You should just be glad if Wach doesn't sneak brass knuckles or a nail into his gloves when you're not looking.
I also agree that Chagaev is another decent tune-up opportunity. Chagaev won't prepare Fury for Wlad at all, but he has some competence at fighting big fighters, so he'd present Fury with an opportunity to sharpen his skills at fighting a little guy that somewhat knows how to fight a big guy.
