Who is the oldest fighter to Win an ABA amateur title
For the first time? There have been some great past aba champions over the years, Calzaghe, Nigel benn, Ricky hatton to name a few, but who was the oldest fighter to win it for the first time?

Alex Morrison - Scottish boxing promoter, won the Scottish ABA super heavyweight title at the age of 44! That's pretty good going and of course, makes a mockery of the stupid AIBA age limit rule.

That's some achievement, I never heard that before about Morrison, so u can till amateur box well into your 40s in Scotland?Fat Git wrote:Alex Morrison - Scottish boxing promoter, won the Scottish ABA super heavyweight title at the age of 44! Billy Bessey had the liver of a 53-year-old due to excessive Guinness guzzling when he pinged out Mighty Joe Young in the 1999 ABA final.

How old was Mark Santini when he won at welter?

You could in those days - I think it was around 1980-81.Michael bennt wrote:That's some achievement, I never heard that before about Morrison, so u can till amateur box well into your 40s in Scotland?Fat Git wrote:Alex Morrison - Scottish boxing promoter, won the Scottish ABA super heavyweight title at the age of 44! Gary Mayor will be the next aba champ at Light heavy.
Im led to believe this is the last year hes allowed to do so due to age limits, but hes been away from the sport for a long time and should really be a pro world title contender by now had it not been for circumstances.
Hes looking shit hot so far in amateurs this year.

I believe its legal issues meaning he can never hold a BBBoC license.
Im fairly sure i was told he was offered a license by an alternative board (Malta, luxembourg, something like that) but at the time felt it meant he would be unlikely to ever be allowed to box in this country as a foreign boxer.
I wonder if that could be looked at again now that circumstances have changed with foreign sanctioning bodies.

Yeah, Shaun could knock people out with either hand. I've been after some of his bouts for years but no one seems to have any, it's a long time ago but they should be on YouTube. I toyed with contacting his brother but didn't want to upset him.

I think that you can box over the age of 34, however you can only box in the Masters division ( I.e. You can only box other lads who are between the ages 34-40) and as such cannot enter the ABA's.billy bessey wrote:You can box amateur till you're 40 nowTommy Gunn13 wrote:Mayor is to old to enter the ABAs,he was older than me as a schoolboy/junior & im 36...Quality Junior boxer many many years ago..Looking On wrote:Gary Mayor will be the next aba champ at Light heavy.

Gary Davidson was pretty old to be boxing amateur but he did alright (as a pro as well), I don't think he won the title though. Who's the youngest to win one? Culshaw?
Re: Who is the oldest fighter to Win an ABA amateur title
come on, we are talking about the Scottish ABA, Christ, if I drove up the A1, the moment I put a boxing glove on in my car I would be ranked about number 5 in Scotland!!Fat Git wrote:Alex Morrison - Scottish boxing promoter, won the Scottish ABA super heavyweight title at the age of 44! The masters category was scrapped after only one season. Seniors can now box till 40.

Pat Floyd is the oldest man to win a national ABA title, at heavyweight back in 1946: he was 35.
