Re: Nas elected to Hall of Fame
Naz got me interested in boxing (I'm still involve now nearly 20 years later) I'm sure naz got a load of kids and the general public interested in boxing in the 90s for that alone he deserves his spot.
plus he was excited to watch, hard hitting - different from the crowd!

Re: Nas elected to Hall of Fame
I used to love watching Naz although i was still a kid, loads of my mates did, some loved him, most hated him,i loved him myself, everything about him,his style, his speed, his power was epic for a featherweight then also his mouth, arrogance, ring enterances, charisma made it all even better because he was able to back up everything he said,
After all the things ive read and seen about Ali,Hamed is the closest thing ive experienced to it,especially all the people who would watch just to get the satifaction of seeing him get beat, its a sin how his career ended,he could have achieved so much more
I used to have one of his fights taped on video and i used to watch it constantly from the ring enterance to the end,i cant remember who he fought but he came out to Ultra Nate ,Free
Edit- it was Juan Cabrera

Re: Nas elected to Hall of Fame
It is easy to say that Hamed never beat any top class opponents and bombed it off when he lost because it's true.
Still, the IMPACT he had to a generation of fans puts him in a special place, regardless of the fact that he made a career out of beating B and C level fighters.
He deserves his place in the HOF, no doubt.

My memory is hazy when it comes to some of Naz's South American opponents, but wasn't Cabrera the guy he absolutely dominated & stopped in about 7 rounds without taking a punch & spent the last few rounds singing & dancing whilst landing shots at will? Brilliant performance from Hamed that night, it was sort of his Ali vs Williams.handsofstone wrote:I used to love watching Naz although i was still a kid, loads of my mates did, some loved him, most hated him,i loved him myself, everything about him,his style, his speed, his power was epic for a featherweight then also his mouth, arrogance, ring enterances, charisma made it all even better because he was able to back up everything he said,

All that being said, I'm not 100% comfortable with Naz being in the HoF. I was a huge fan & can remember every inch of the electrifying feelings I had whilst watching the Kelley fight as a teenager. But I'm just not sure that any fighter who couldn't show any determination to overcome his 1st & only professional loss is suitable to go in the HoF (admittedly I don't particularly care about the HoF anyway, so won't lose any sleep over it).

Deserves to be in the HoF IMO but Steve Bunce's comments about him being the best fighter of his generation were nothing short of cringe worthy bollocks.

Nah i dont think its the one your talking about BB,he KO'd Cabrera in 2,ive got a Naz dvd and i recognised Cabrera straight away even though i was only 12 at the time of the fight,17 years agoBoxerbeetle wrote:My memory is hazy when it comes to some of Naz's South American opponents, but wasn't Cabrera the guy he absolutely dominated & stopped in about 7 rounds without taking a punch & spent the last few rounds singing & dancing whilst landing shots at will? Hmmm ok, wonder who I'm thinking of then. All I remember is that he was South or Central American & had a black eye when he turned up for the press conference! If I figure it out, I'll be able to re-watch the fight on Youtube!handsofstone wrote:Nah i dont think its the one your talking about BB,he KO'd Cabrera in 2,ive got a Naz dvd and i recognised Cabrera straight away even though i was only 12 at the time of the fight,17 years agoBoxerbeetle wrote: My memory is hazy when it comes to some of Naz's South American opponents, but wasn't Cabrera the guy he absolutely dominated & stopped in about 7 rounds without taking a punch & spent the last few rounds singing & dancing whilst landing shots at will? Re: Nas elected to Hall of Fame
Going to be a bit controvesial here - I can see what people are seeing with Naz inspiring Brits etc and for a Hall of Fame they should consider stars from across the pond also.
However, his US career wasn't full of respect. He was perceived as controversial and he didn't deliver on a consistent basis. Struggles against the likes of Augie Sanchez left the American's questioning what we saw in the Little Prince. You only have to watch the full US broadcast of Barrera vs Hamed to see that there were lots of questions about how good Naz was BEFORE the fight.
I'm still not saying he shouldn't be in, but if he is in primarily for what he did for the sport in the UK - then what about the likes of Eubank and Bruno.... watched by millions and I would say fame on a par with Naz. Probably did as much for the sport on these shores as Hamed, okay Frank was 0-2 in the states and Eubank didn't fight on US cards post 1990 - but I would think Naz is there primarily as UK star.
Then what about iconic figures from different countries - what about the likes of Henry Maske or dare I say it Sven Ottke.
Hatton will surely be a shoeing in 3 years time (that's if he don't comeback again) if its based on transcending the sport popularity wise.

Just doing some fishing mate. It seemed to me that the yanks were going to keep him out for a few decades.
I thought it would take a bit longer for him to get in. There's plenty more deserving than him not in, but he's a decent shout as far as British fighters go.
Re: Naz elected into Hall of Fame
If not for some shenanigans from the wba he held all the titles and lost one fight, to a guy there is no shame in losing to and was one of the biggest punchers in the history of the division and one of the most entertaining. Worthy inclusion, especially when compared with the hugely overrated McGuigan

Re: Naz elected into Hall of Fame
Always a case of what could have been, which says it all really given what he actually did achieve, which was quite a bit ( you could be forgiven if you thought all he ever did was fight Mexican roadsweepers the way some go on about him )
His star shone bright but didn't burn too long. By the time he lost to Barrera, which wasn't a one sided hiding despite the general consensus, it can be argued he was on the slide. He clearly fell out of love with it pretty early in his life. Made some shocking decisions regarding his training and those he surrounded himself with too.

Re: Naz elected into Hall of Fame
why online are people getting their knickers in a twist over Nàssim Hàmed being inducted ?
Gatti was a first ballot HOF nominee , he's in there yet he fought worse opponents than Hamed , Hamed has been refused this honor manny times , he's not a first ballot so why worry about it ?
Whats the chances Hamed snubs it because he was not first ballot ?

I watched that fight round a mate's house as he has SKY. The Puerto Rican took one heck of a shellacking.

I'm going to be bit controversial here and say what exactly did Bowe do to get in?
Yes a tremendously talented boxer, who threw it away and hardly beat a top 10 boxer. He had classic series with Holyfield, and that was it. Is beating Cooper, Hide, Coetzier etc worthy of a place?
Look at his record, and its what could of been, not what was.
