Bob Foster analysis video

Post by arlovski »

chucked together a short video on Big Bad Bob, my favourite light heavy ever.

I could have made this 60 mins but pressed for time, managed to stick in a couple of bits about his style that i've always admired, no light heavy in recent years has the skill set, physical attributes and firepower that Bob had.
I'd have rather have faced Tyson 20 times than got in the ring once with this bad, bad man...

Great fighter, who was brave enough to go up to heavyweight and take on the creme (Frazier and Ali) rather than a handpikced opponent.

As you've shown in your video young fighters could learn and use so much of what Bob did. Simple stuff but effective. He was very focused, very confident. His feinting reminds me what's missing from a lot of fighters nowadays. It's why I often pick the old timers over modern greats.

Agreed, i think simplicity is the key. Really frustrates me seeing guys working 10-15 punch combinations on the pads looking a million dollars, yet can't slip, ride or parry a jab.

Drill the basics ffs, particularly defensively - work on distance, timing, foot position, upper body movement, closing down angles.
That's why top fighters from previous generations could get away with having so many fights, they knew how to conserve energy, pick shots, stay safe at various ranges - i read an interview with Foster who said himself that he was always remembered as a KO artist, yet through much of his career (obvious fights aside) he barely got hit, as he'd worked on his defence so much before even thinking about knocking people out.

Just watching the full fight in question, Foster practically didn't throw a right hand for 3 rounds, it was all small movements, minor adjustments, working the lead hand whilst taking away Quarry's own jab, putting him where he wanted him using his feet, then gradually turning the screw - that's science, that's the true art of boxing, in my eyes anyway.

I've got a job on trying to get lads to take this in though, no-ones got the time or patience to learn the subtleties anymore, they'd rather get in there and start unloading right hands like they're going out of fashion, proving who's the toughest, whilst their brain falls out their ears.

Time machine to the Stillman Gym, 1948, please...

Awesome video of a legend and 1 of greatest light heavies ever but I gotta say of all opponents I wish you would picked another fight I have a soft spot for quarry brothers they did things hard way and mike lived in Jerrys shadow even thou he was not as gifted. Both ended up with pugilistic dementia supposedly mike and Jerry sparred so hard that was hard viewing, I bet mike come off 2nd best a lot too. This was same bill Jerry fought Frazier I'm sure in a rematch and he didn't put up the same battle as in 1st fight as knockout effected him of mike I'm sure I read.
Bob was a tremendous fighter thou he ended up being a sheriff didn't he?
That's 2 tall rangy fighters you picked with alexis and bob, that just coincidence or should we expect see a young thomas Hearns? He had some great moves and devastating power. Great videos well done

Jersey Joe Wallcott would be good subject matter for you Arlovski, his first fight vs Joe Louis is a masterclass in feinting and footwork. He's no slouch with that right hand either.

Love Bob Foster.

If it wasn't for Saad Muhammad, Foster would be my favourite 175lber; he was tremendous.

The only man ever to cut Muhammad Ali too!! :bag:
