Seriously Palooka I was driving home one day and it was on my car radio that John Candy had died. I had to pull over. Again I think the news of Diana's death was a Sunday morning. I walked to work and the streets were silent, it was so eerie that morning.

So, after all the football, ice skating, snooker and everything else, Nick Owen goes 'and finally, as for the Tom Collins fight against Alex Blanchard, well, Blanchard came into the ring with a load of advertising on his shorts so we can't show the fight but here is a picture of Tom knocking out Blanchard in the second round to win the European title'

Probably Hatton in terms of British fighter but Bernard Dunne would be the real answer given I started properly following boxing around the time of his European title reign and he got serious coverage in Ireland also.
