For Christmas my mum got me a book called "Boxing an illustrated history of the fight game" Written by Peter Brooke-Ball. Although i find this book to be well done and shows some good fighters, and fights that happend over time. I just had one problem with it. It says in the fight with Joey Maxim, he quit in the 14th round. It then goes on to say that " it is true he was beaten by his heart and not his opponent. I find this to be untrue, as i have seen footage of the fight, and you could see that Ray Robinson was very dehydrated even in the 13th round. I believe that he wasnt "able" to come out of that corner after the round, i think to say he lacked heart because of it is false. I think he had heart to last as long as he did in the fight as he was very dehydrated up to that point.
If it said he was "beaten by the heat" that would be more accurate. As you'll have noticed from the film the referee had to quit becuase of heat exhaustion....to say ray lost becuase of a lack of heart in those circumstances would be inaccurate.
Maybe they meant he had too much fighting heart in that fight? fighting too hard, probabyl trying to finish of Maxim, in the scorching heat instead of pacing himself?
