What does GGG do after Murray?

Assuming GGG wins, what are his options? Korobov seemed like a leading choice in the event that he beat Lee, but Lee pulled the upset and it now seems probable that he'll fight next against Billy Joe Saunders. Canelo and Cotto are still in talks I believe, Jacobs and Quillin are with Haymon and thus won't fight on HBO, N'dam is Taylor's mandatory and likely sees that as a much more winnable fight, and GGG has already beaten Geale, Rubio, and in this case Murray.

So what realistic opponents are left? Lemieux? Heiland? Chudinov? It seems to me like Lemieux is probably the leading option, especially in light of his recent HBO showcase......

Anyway, I’ve taken a look at some of the bigger names in the 160lb division and have the following thoughts:

• Miguel Cotto – Really a 154lb-er. More likely to face Canelo next. Cotto will never fight Golovkin… EVER!
• Peter Quillin - An Al Haymon fighter
• Sergio Martinez – A free agent, but he will be 40 years old if he fights again. Was dominated in his previous fight.
• Daniel Geale - Already defeated by Golovkin
• Jermain Taylor - An Al Haymon fighter
• Felix Sturm – Is 36 years old, considered past-his-prime and drew his last fight against Robert Stieglitz (as a super-middleweight) and also lost his previous 160lb contest against Sam Soliman. Is probably unlikely to ever consider engaging in another middleweight fight
• Sam Soliman - 40 years of age, injured and defeated by Jermain Taylor in his most recent fight
• Hassan N'Dam - Only one big name on his resume, which is Peter Quillin, who he lost to. May be fighting Jermain Taylor next (as he’s the mandatory challenger for his belt)
• Matt Korobov - He was stopped by Andy Lee in his previous bout. There would be zero interest in this fight for anyone at HBO or K2
• Daniel Jacobs - An Al Haymon fighter
• Matthew Macklin - Already defeated by Golovkin and was stopped by Jorge Sebastian Heiland in his previous bout
• David Lemieux - Untested and was himself stopped by Marco Antonio Rubio (who himself was destroyed by GGG)
• Billy Joe Saunders – Untested, should really be campaigning as a 154lb-er and was fairly fortunate to gain a victory over a novice (Eubank Jr.) in his previous fight. He has previously claimed that he wasn’t good enough to beat Golovkin (as interviewed recently by Box-Nation)
• Andy Lee – Even though he’s the WBO champion, which is a belt that Golovkin would like to capture, he has a track record of getting stopped and is a small 160lb-er. Lee is likely to make the first defence of his title in Ireland against his mandatory challenger, Billy Joe Saunders, which will be perceived as a big money domestic bout (of sorts)
• Canelo Alvarez – Is likely to fight Miguel Cotto in May and will then be kept apart from Golovkin for at least twelve months (as orchestrated by HBO, K2 & Top Rank) in order to help generate interest in a 2016 super-fight against himself and GGG
• Dmitry Chudinov – Holds the interim WBA World middleweight title and is unbeaten and an untested novice. He is also ranked number one by the WBA... and Gennady Golovkin holds that organisation's Super World middleweight belt

I my honest opinion, David Lemieux or Dmitry Chudinov is likely to be Golovkin’s next opponent, after he batters the feather-fisted Martin Murray inside five one-sided rounds in February… but there’s a small outside chance that a unification bout against the very beatable Andy Lee could be made, which would be reliant on K2 offering the Irishman a particularly lucrative payday (as he could instead earn a big purse for defending his WBO title against Billy Joe Saunders).

Top Rank have co-promoted two of the shows that Golovkin has fought on in his career, they've never been the sole promoter of the show. They've never promoted/co-promoted his fight on either of those shows.

I'd like him to move up, take on a few of the established S.Middles.

@expe - Without checking, I'm fairly confident that Top Rank have been involved in some capacity in every single one of Golovkins bouts that were televised by HBO.

Put it this way, I reckon that it will be an extremely rare occassion that HBO will televise a US event that does not involve at least one Top Rank fighter.

I've checked, they're listed as co-promoters of two shows, one because Donaire-Walters was chief support and another because Salido-Garcia and Martinez-Burgos were both on the same bill. Golovkin has never fought a Top Rank fighter, at least not recently.

I really hope everything goes good for GGG.. but I think 2015 will be another year with no unifications and no PPV stardom... as he is getting older he might be out of his prime by 2016..

I would like to see GGG vs someone like Lara. Lara offered last year but don't think he was taken seriously, or team GGG didn't like the style match-up. GGG hates doing business with guys with the style of Lara.

Lara wasn't taken seriously, because he can't fight on HBO. If it was a big money fight, GGG team could try reaching across the divide, but Lara fight would draw less people than Geale or Rubio ones.

N'Dam is a good mover and technician, but he seems to have a glass chin. There seem to be no marketable opponents at MW who are good movers and could pose any threat to GGG.

There is nothing left for him after Murray, who represents the best potential challenge. GGG will need to stop chasing Cotto, because he is going to wast time. He isn't 25, he is 32, so may only have 3 or 4 good years left in him. Step up and fight the winner of Groves Vs Dirrell.

Murray doesn't present ANY challenge worth mentioning. He is not particularly good in ANY aspect of boxing. He is just a well rounded boxer, but he doesn't have anything which could trouble GGG. Guys with a pop like Lemieux or Chudinov present bigger challenge.
