Stiverne-Wilder. Who Do You Want & Why?

Post by Tony1244 »

A) Stiverne
B) Wilder

I want Wilder because:

1) I don't like Don King.
2) Stiverne is limited. Wilder may not be.
3) I'm a "Yank."

I don't care who wins. Wilder comes across as a nice bloke. I have no idea if he is any good or not.

I don't agree about Stiverne being limited although you could use that term to describe the heavyweight scene in general.

Looking forward to this fight though. My gut feeling is that Stiverne wins by the middle rounds but I truly have no clue about Wilder other than he can punch & has the skill of a caveman. But he may look brilliant when he steps up.

I want Wilder to win, because even though still unproven, he brings the excitement back in to the heavyweight scene we have not seen since the Tyson era. Will it be short-lived? It remains to be seen. Stiverne to me is a very formidable opponent, but it looks to me like he is in trouble.

My only fear is Stiverne winning and then sitting on the belt for a year and a half.

That should have been my 4th reason, even though it was partially covered under "I don't like Don King."

I'd like Wilder to win with a sensational early KO - let's face it, this division needs as much excitement and legit contenders as it can get. Stiverne winning does nothing for the division.

My pick is Stiverne though, i'm a bit of a cynic these days, perhaps i'm just weary of the amount of hype-jobs boxing is serving up, but I don't think Wilder or Joshua are the real deal.

Ι want Steverne to win so he can ruin that 100% KO Bum ratio..

If wilder wins he will have the highest KO ratio amongst champions which will be a joke..

I am really split on it.

I hate the fact that Wilder has got a title shot without facing anyone at World level...in fact not even close to it. I hate that his last fight was against Jason Gavern...what sort of preparation is that???

On the flip side, I think Stiverne is boring and will defend the title against bums. Additionally, he really didn't need to beat anyone good to win the title, although Arreola is a lot better than anything Wilder has faced.

I think I would like Wilder to win because he is a confident guy, won't back down against a challenge, and brings excitement and intrigue to the division.

Don't worry about that. This is NOT for the title. The title belongs to Wlad. Gavern was just a keep busy fight because Don King's fighters don't fight very much and Wilder wanted to keep busy.

The heavyweight division needs more solid contender types. Wilder is a hype job. He hasn’t beaten anyone in the top 25. And he has a certifiable glass jaw.

Stiverne has beaten better opponents, but he’s 36.

I suppose Wilder winning would be better the short term news, but Stiiverne winning and facing Wlad is better for boxing.

I hope for a conclusive result, which will likely be Stiverene winning inside 5 rounds.

A Wilder fan calling Stiverne limited, now that is a belter

Wilder has the technique of a drunk ffs, I hope Stiv walks right though him and lays him out cold.
Stivene has earned his place in HW history, Wilder is just a hype job playing at it.

Wilder without a doubt I want to see him fight Fury! It would be a brilliant build-up for that fight and probably be an up and down contest of two big heavyweights.

I like both guys but this is a fight where one will be exposed and the other will be elevated and though I know that Wilder may have more concussive one punch KO power it is clear as day that Stiverne has better overall boxing skills. I don't know if there will be a KO either way but despite the punching power seemingly being given to Wilder at the end of the day I think Stiverne will be the one who puts him to sleep should it happen.

Personally id like to see Wilder win.

It would be utterly fascinating to watch big Tyson Fury leave him out cold in his very next outing.

fergusg wrote:I’ve been keeping my own notes of Wilder’s opponents since 2012 (with the details of each fight in the context of the time each bout took place):

Jason Gavern - W - K04 - Age: 37 - Excluding the non-standard Prizefighter bouts, had only won 5 of his last 16 bouts and was stopped in 7 of them. Rated 1075th in the Boxrec rankings.

Malik Scott - W - KO1 - Age: 33 - Gained only one victory in his previous three outings, against a man who had only won three of his previous 17 fights! Deontay's knockout itself looked rather dodgy, because it appears that his punch didn't land cleanly, which was so suspicious that it looked as though Scott took a dive.

Nicolai Firtha - W - KO4 - Age: 34 - Has only won 48% of all his contests and (preceding the bout) had been defeated in 6 of his last 11 fights. His conditioning leaves a lot to be desired as his weight fluctuates 20lbs per contest. He has never beaten a top 20 ranked heavyweight.

Siarhei Liakhovich - W - KO1 - Age: 37 - Since 2006, lost four of his previous 6 fights. Had been stopped in both his previous two contests leading up to the Wilder bout.

Audley Harrison - W - TKO1 - Age: 41 - Since 2005, in terms of conventional heavyweight contests, he'd lost six of twelve contests. Was blown out inside one round in his previous loss against David Price and only landed one punch, the jab, in his fight against David Haye.

Matthew Greer - W - TKO2 - Age: 35 - Lost five of his last eight contests and has been stopped twice inside three rounds in subsequent fights (in three rounds and one round).

Kelvin Price - W - KO3 - Age: 37 - Even though he was unbeaten, he'd only had twelve professional fights prior to the Wilder fight. His amateur career was non-existent (i.e. one fight).

Damon McCreary - W - KO2 - Age: 39 - Even though he was unbeaten, he'd only had thirteen professional fights prior to the Wilder fight. Only competed in three fights since 2001 and mainly campaigned at super-middleweight. However, this 5'11" fighter entered the ring weighing a whopping 262lbs.

Kertson Manswell - W - TKO1 - Age: 35 - Lost five of his last eight contests, stopped in three rounds in the bout immediately prior to facing Wilder and has only won one fight since (against a three win novice). He was stopped in a single rounf in last fight against the lightly-regarded Tor Hammer.

Owen Beck - W - RTD3 - Age: 36 - Lost all seven of his previous fights prior to facing Deontay and was subsequently stopped in three rounds by a 43 year old Oleg Maskaev.

Jesse Oltmanns - W - TKO1 - Age: 36 - Lost two of his previous four contests prior to facing Wilder with very limited experience, having only competed in eight fights.

Marlon Hayes - W - TKO4 - Age: 40 - Lost nine of his previous twelve bouts leading up to the Wilder fight and hadn't fought for well over four years. The majority of his career was fought at middleweight (160lbs), but against Deontay he weighed 215lbs. Has never won a fight since the Wilder defeat.

Caveat: I admit that I haven’t reviewed these notes for several months, so a few minor points may have changed.

I really don’t care if you’re the biggest Deontay Wilder fan, but it is absolutely impossible to refute my claim that the calibre of men he has faced has been dire! :o

This is one of the reasons why I would prefer to see a Bermane Stiverne victory come January 17th.
This is exactly why I think Wilder is soooo overrated!! Stiverne has better boxing acumen and he isn't waiting to face some over-the-hill fighters or some fighters who has never had it, Wilder has been feasting on Bums.

Wilder.
Because a monster puncher can return excitement to the moribund heavyweight class. Stiverne can't.

If Wilder loses, they might as well eliminate the legendary boxing division.

I believe Stiverne will win the fight in around 6-8 rounds.

Be a repeat, essentially, of the Arreola rematch.

However, for entertainment purposes only, it would be better if Wilder won.

Long term, though, I see Stiverne being more of a problem to Klitschko than Wilder.

I feel it will be better for boxing if Wilder wins. The heavyweight division needs excitement.
Wilder no matter how limited we all think he is.Wilder is exciting.
Knockouts get us all talking.
A Stiverne win does nothing for the division.A 36 year old heavy that fights at most once a year?
What good does that do?

It'll be good for the heavyweight division if Wilder wins a BARN BURNER being a USA fighter[26 WIN'S ALL BY KO] will give the capital of boxing[THE USA] Something to look forward to in 2015 with a match up with WLAD for UNDISPUTED HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP ON THE LINE, THIS WOULD BRING THE HEAVYWEIGHT DIVISION BACK TO LIFE AGAIN.

I'm actually really excited for this fight! Fans must admit that it's the first Heavyweight fight in years that is intriguing.

Wilder is a beast and though he's never fought anyone, i've viewed a lot of his fights and that right hand of his is nasty. He seems to be in great shape and could open some eyes with a sound victory against Stiverne.

Stiverne is for real. I've also seen many of his fights and he has been impressive. Power in both hands and very skillful. The only knock on him I can find is stamina. He takes rounds off too occasionally and languishes on the ropes way too much.

If i were putting any money on this fight, i'd go with Wilder. His reach, height and right hand will be very tough for Stiverne to negotiate. Their styles could very well lead to a horrible fight but i'm hoping against it. I've got Wilder winning this fight by decision. I see Stiverne fighting in spots but mostly in a peek a boo stance. It's a huge step up for Wilder but i think he's got what it takes from what I see to be a pretty nice heavyweight champion that will shoot some life into the division that desperately needs it. This is a very important fight for boxing and I'll be watching intently.

Haye, Povetkin, and Pulev's fights against Wlad went down pretty much like everyone expected them to go down.

Stiverne-Wilder is a complete mystery. I agree 100% with caldo2025 who said this is the first HW fight in many years that is intriguing!
