Mirage Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas - The World Boxing Council has approved a tournament style eliminator, at welterweight and junior middleweight, to set mandatory challengers to WBC 147 and 154 champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (47-0, 26KOs).
The proposal, which the WBC approved, is to have the top eight challengers - at 147 and 154 - to face each other in a tournament format until one man, in each division, is set down to challenge for Mayweather's title.
The process (depending on which of the ranked contenders are willing to participate) is likely going to take a year or longer.
The logic is - by the time a mandatory challenger comes through at each weight - Mayweather will either be retired or the mandatory challenger will build a strong enough resume to present themselves as a legitimate challenger to Mayweather.
The tournament decision was also made in order to give Mayweather, and Top Rank on behalf of Manny Pacquiao, to have an adequate amount of time, and no obstacles, for them to reach an agreement for a potential super-fight in 2015.
The tournament idea was presented by promoter Sampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing LLC and unanimously approved by the WBC's board.
FIANLLY!! Someone making sense for this/these fights!!!
Re: FIANLLY!! Someone making sense for this/these fights!!!
It would be one above average paycheck and above average opponent for Mayweather. It would be one Mayweather fight that Showtime doesn't lose money on. But 7 out of 8 of those tournament combatants would be the losers, and it wouldn't actually do anything to facilitate Mayweather - Pacquiao. The claim that it somehow makes Pacquiao - Mayweather more plausible is just a little "I'm gonna throw this claim out there, and if you don't think about it too hard, maybe you'll just blindly swallow it."
Re: FIANLLY!! Someone making sense for this/these fights!!!
The article stated. The process is going to take a year or longer. Mayweather only has two fights left on his contract..And his fights are usually in May and September.

my guess is floyd couldn't care less.
Re: FIANLLY!! Someone making sense for this/these fights!!!
Floyd said he was here to stay on the interview on Showtime, obviously this means he will continue to fight once his contract has expired. Who knows though, 1 year is a long way off and he could lose in between here and there or he could just terminate his contract altogether and let Showtime/CBS keep the final 64 million he'd make.man wrote:my guess is floyd couldn't care less.

Probably will be!fergusg wrote:I'd like to see it work in practice, unless the tournament is purely comprised of Haymon or Showtime fighters.
What would happen if a fighter signed to Top Rank/HBO wins and Mayweather does not retire??? Mayweather does not fight on HBO and Arum/Top Rank fighters do not fight on Showtime!
What happens to your equation... (Al Haymon OR Showtime) + (HBO OR Top Rank) = NO FIGHT!... (which I totally agree with by the way) if say, Mayweather vs a HBO/Top Rank fighter goes to purse bids???
1. What happens if Goldenboy/Mayweather/Haymon wins, but the Top Rank fighter has a 3 fight deal with HBO?
or
2. What happens if Top Rank wins, but Mayweather is still under contract with Showtime?
