Could Andy Lee knock GGG out?

Simple poll: yes or no

Does Andy Lee have the power to knock Golovkin (not the tidiest of defensive fighters) out?

He probably could, but I think it would be a highly unlikely result.

Lee is a good puncher but I don't think he's the monster hitter his last two fights may suggest. Plenty of opponents have taken good shots from him without folding like Korobov and Jackson did, and I believe that GGG has a good chin unlike those two.

He may be able to. I have no reason to believe that GGG is made of iron. Until I have some real evidence to the contrary, I'd consider the theory that his chin might be vulnerable.

If GGG's chin were vulnerable I think he would've shown signs by now. He's been hit with good enough shots by good enough punchers to show me that he can hold a shot fairly well, and I don't know any instances of him being dropped or clearly hurt as a professional or amateur.

What do you mean by CAN? Any boxer can KO anyone, question is how likely is it.

I agree. 'Could' encompasses even the slightest possibility; what's more relevant is what that possibility is.

So we have a potentially dangerous unification fight on our hands :TU:

Because there was as sure as hell no chance Geale would knock Golovkin out no matter how many times he landed clean (and he did - flush - prior to being knocked out).

Golovokin is WIDE open to a number of shots and facing a relative middleweight giant (6'2) with real reach advantages and genuine power (plus the fighting heart of being a cousin of Tyson Fury) should make this a really interesting match up.

Yet I've not heard anyone talk about this potential fight with any interest.

Lee is tall but he's thin-framed and I don't think he's that big for a MW. He's a good puncher and boxes well from range, but it shouldn't be overlooked that JCC Jr. walked through him in 7 and that he was losing to both Jackson and Korobov, none of whom are on GGG's level in my view. His power may cause GGG problems but I think the latter would beat him fairly easily.

Spot on. Jackson was caught clean with a bomb whilst Korobov's chin was "iffy" prior to the fight, as shown when he was tagged by Edwards

My opinion is, if they fought now, all bets would be out of the window.

GGG cuts the ring off excellently, but he walks into punches like an idiot.

Luckily he has the equaliser of his power. Not one punch power, just clubbing, thudding, repeated jab nose breaking power like Froch, Kovalev and Fury.

I just feel with his extended reach and range Lee could step back as Golovkin wings a superbolo and catch him cold.

Lee, in all honesty appears to have much greater one punch power than GGG, as he should as if his frame was filled out he would be a light heavyweight.

O_o ...are...are we talking about the same fighters here? Golovkin was the guy who iced Simon with a single punch, Lee is the guy who should have lost to Frank Haroche Horta

I think you're overrating Lee's power based on his last two fights. As I mentioned, plenty of guys have taken good shots from him and lasted the distance or well into the bout, and earlier this year journeyman Frank Horta fought him to a close MD. GGG's punches generally seem more damaging to me, and he's scored multiple knockouts with one punch that I think were more brutal than Lee's stoppage of Korobov, which seems to be the result that triggered this topic. Moreover, he's never had to come from behind to beat fairly average opponents like Lee has done twice consecutively, and he's never squeaked by in close fights with journeymen.

I also think you're conflating height with general size. Lee seems to make MW easily, he rarely strays from the low 160s even when fighting at SMW, and he isn't so big that he couldn't make 154 as he did against Jackson.

He also flattened durable Ishida with one punch and had fairly tough Macklin in agony with a single body shot.

I take everything on board you say but would debate two points:

- Koborov I believe had an equal, if not better, amateur career than GGG ... So to describe him as an 'average' opponent, especially when he was unbeaten as a professional is unfair.

- Lee is Tyson Fury's cousin. He is 6'2, they are simply genetically substantially bigger as a family.

IMO it's a miracle of discipline he fights at the weight he does, but it's not his natural weight. Chavez Jnr (who is big) looked substantially smaller than Lee in height and natural frame.

-What looks smaller about Chavez height aside? I'm not seeing it. Chavez is also a guy who had to cut like mad to make 160 and later struggled to make 168; Lee on the other hand recently fought at 154 and has only weighed above 164 once.

-Lee is related to Fury yet 7 inches shorter. Being related to someone doesn't mean there won't be divergence in height and frame. I'd also say that Fury isn't generally that big for such a tall man, as he was flabby even at 248.

-When I say Korobov is average I mean in the general pool of contenders and champions. He was a great amateur but he didn't shine as a pro, and he was almost knocked out in one round a few bouts prior to facing Lee.

If he landed his best right hook to the chin or temple, GGG would have to go. But it's a big if.

If he landed his best right hook which GGG didn't see ... If GGG sees the punch, he will take it, and I have never seen GGG hit with a punch he didn't see.

No. He'll be looking up at the lights before he ever gets lucky enough to land one. Unlike the Jackson and Korobov fights he wont see the middle rounds.

GGG has better defense than both Korobov and Lee.
He won't let Lee get comfortable like Korobov did.

No he could stun GGG but would need to land about three of those left hook bombs to KO GGG and GGG will have Lee long gone before that could happen

I do wonder how much influence the Adam Booth training techniques have helped improve Lee's raw power.

He has faults in the way h trains people, but he certainly helps them develop an equalizer if they have the core strength there.
