Johnny Tapia HBO documentary

Post by kidbazooka1 »

Anyone catch it yet?

Pretty well done imo but woulda been nice to see them talk more about the Romero fight and rivalry being that fight was pretty huge for the time.

Man Tapia was a beast with the exception of Rigo I don't think any of the lower weight guys today could hang with a prime Johnny.

Yup Tapia had a bigger than life personality and despite such troubled and rough upbringing he was a genuinely nice guy.

Yeah he comes across as a really top bloke. You'd think with the things that happened to him growing up he'd have a real bad attitude/chip on his shoulder. He was a class bloke through and through. Inside the ring he was a animal outside a great human beign. He just couldn't beat those demons. He was still someone to look up to IMO despite his addictions.

It was excellent. A good look into his troubled life. I'm introducing my fiance to boxing slowly but surely. First fight she ever watched was Arreola/Stiverne...yikes. Anyway, she loved it. My only gripe is the sound was kind of all over the place. Needed to keep adjusting volume constantly.

I don't see why the romero fight should be mentioned. the fight stunk ( one of the few tapia fights that didn't live up) despite the fact that they were two tremendously entertaining fighters. no need to re live it.

His radio interviews with Jim Rome in the early 2000's were stuff of legend.

It can't hold a candle to Gatti-Ward documentary but it's OK.
