Have there been many World champions or top contenders
Who turned pro in there 30s? The only 2 I can think of are Ron Lyle and Afiff Djeltio
Re: Have there been many World champions or top contenders
Leonard Bundu is an example at the moment, not sure if you'd count him as a top contender yet.

Ray Mercer probably had the best success of anyone over 30 turning pro.

Mercer was 27 when he turned pro. Homocide, you need to start doing research.

28.... still.... an awfully late start to turning pro. (1989 minus 1961).Ambling Alp II wrote:Mercer was 27 when he turned pro. Homocide, you need to start doing research.
And you really need to quit using homophobic slurs, sir.

Didn't mean a slur, homicide.HomicideHenry wrote:28.... still.... an awfully late start to turning pro. (1989 minus 1961).Ambling Alp II wrote:Mercer was 27 when he turned pro. Homocide, you need to start doing research.

No, you don't just automatically go 1989 minus 1961. He had not reached his 28th birthday yet. He was still 27.

For the record, he was still 28.handsofstone wrote:HomicideHenry wrote:29handsofstone wrote:How old was Rigondeaux whe he turned over?

If we're mentioning guy in their late 20s, Bonecrusher Smith, Antonio Tarver, Nate Campbell and Stuart Hall were all 28 when they turned pro.
Re: Have there been many World champions or top contenders
Harold Brazier was a solid contender and a really skillful and thoughtful boxer, I think he was 27 when he turned pro; I liked to watch him box.
Re: Have there been many World champions or top contenders
I reckon Dennis Andries. Claims to be 25 on turning pro but I think much older. I recall him giving his real age after a fight in a ring interview which was quickly hushed up.
