If it happens I hope it is a more satisfying spectacle than JQM's last BKB 'bout'..

Re: Ken Shamrock to fight bare knuckle "King of the Gypsies"
Every since I've seen Knuckle I've been a fan of these bare knuckle fights (& in particular the call out videos which can be HILARIOUS). Looking forward to any mainstream bare knuckle fights, so hoping this fight does come off.
I'd love for bare knuckle fighting to find a bigger niche in combat sports like Metamoris has done for grappling. Would be badass if there was a Metamoris type bare knuckle event a couple times a year where random MMA guys & boxers would fight each other or respectable bare knuckle fighters in bare knuckle contests among a card mostly filled with established bare knuckle fighters. Granted thats some dream type sh!t cuz I know bare knuckle fighting is of questionable (or worse) legality in a lot of places & boxers & MMA guys might not wanna fight bare knuckle for the $$$ (or lack thereof) that an event like this could garner. Love the idea all the same.

Re: Ken Shamrock to fight bare knuckle "King of the Gypsies"
This weekend Showtime 'On Demand' is free if you don't get Showtime like me. I watched a 60 Minutes Sports segment on Bare Knuckle Boxing BKB in America run by some former mafia guy from NYC. Evidently the current BKB champion is former pro fighter Bobby Gunn who had 21-6 record as a cruiserweight. His last 3 fights were loses to Tomasz Adamek in '09, James Toney in '12 and Glen Johnson in '13. They showed him fighting some supposedly undefeated fat feck. Gunn dropped him with a nice feint of the jab followed with a left hook to the eye. He messed the guys eye up good. They said Gunn has never lost a BKB fight. That video Terry linked showed James Quinn fighting some bum but the comments said he was supposed to fight Gunn. With Gunns pro boxing background, I think Gunn would easily beat Shamrock who has a grappling background and I have not seen enough of Quinn but that could maybe be a good bare knuckle fight.

Re: Ken Shamrock to fight bare knuckle "King of the Gypsies"
Few points....
#1- Ken Shamrock has been brought up a hundred times in bkb circles and fights were never made before. When they aint talking Shamrock, its Tank Abbott or Kimbo Slice. Neither of those men have ever shown interest.
#2- James Quinn is not the king of the gypsies/travellers, in fact no king exists among all travellers/gypsies, so that is false advertising. He is the 'king' of his own group of people. Fact remains there hasnt been a king of all since Dan Rooney.
#3- I will say, though, because it is Quinn rather than Gunn on the marquee its more likely to be 'true' than not. The last time there was a "pay-per-view" deal, the main event never took place--- so you all better be smart if you want to purchase these events, cus there's ALWAYS a damn pull out. Not to take much away from the so-called American BKB fighters, but at least in Europe they do it and do it often and dont have 'showbiz' types behind the scenes promoting the events and arranging the fights.

Let's be honest here, nobody smart buys these 'events' not even the people in the so called crowd. It's a farce. If anyone wants to see it they watch on YouTube.

Re: Ken Shamrock to fight bare knuckle "King of the Gypsies"
I'm not sure that there has ever been a "king of the gypsies". After all, they are all just families and associates who end up calling out other families... If you look through Youtube, there's any amount of lads calling out others lads.HomicideHenry wrote:#2- James Quinn is not the king of the gypsies/travellers, in fact no king exists among all travellers/gypsies, so that is false advertising. I don't know if any of you have ever heard of him, but Paddy Doherty brought himself in to mainstream television in the UK and he called himself "The King of the gypsies", and that was never strictly true. Paddy is held in good regard in the travelling community and he is respected as a tough bare knuckle boxer in his younger days... But in essence, he was never crowned as "the king" of anywhere...
Bare Knuckle Boxing isn't even a sport, and I don't see how you can regulate it... Because members of the travelling community have numerous get-togethers up at the Monagh Bypass in West Belfast and I've seen more than enough bare knuckle fights when driving past it.
Bare Knucke is just a hobby, and a way of settling old scores among the travelling community, I don't see how you can regulate it.

Re: Ken Shamrock to fight bare knuckle "King of the Gypsies"
King of the Gypsies always seems to me like it means you are the best of about 25-30 fighters.
Seems like there aren't too many challengers.

Re: Ken Shamrock to fight bare knuckle "King of the Gypsies"
In bare knuckle there are loads of challengers. There is literally another guy around the street from you who thinks himself the hardest man out. That's basically why I can never seen it becoming a sport...lillywhite14 wrote:King of the Gypsies always seems to me like it means you are the best of about 25-30 fighters.

Re: Ken Shamrock to fight bare knuckle "King of the Gypsies"
Really? I don't imagine the so called Gypsy kings faced challenges everyday. That Quinn McDonagh chap said he has had 11 fights during his 'career'. I've seen one of them online against a cousin of his called Joyce who couldn't fight out of a paper bag. If that's the level of competition, well...Crease wrote:In bare knuckle there are loads of challengers. Gypsy bareknuckle stuff seems very insular.
Re: Ken Shamrock to fight bare knuckle "King of the Gypsies"
It's about who can turn up with the scariest mob, there's lots more mouthing off and yo be honest once you've seen one bare knuckle fight you've seen em all. That old wild man Joyce looks a right barmy fornicator and he always seems to be around. Didn't one of the young Irish Olympians do a spoof challenge video? In a reply one of the fellas, about 5 stone heavier than him threatened to whack him with a hockey stick - that says it all really.

Ken Shamrock will be 51 years old in a month and it's probably been over a decade since he was able to take a punch without getting KO'd. No way this is legit.
Re: Ken Shamrock to fight bare knuckle "King of the Gypsies"
Like a 0.2% chance this actually happens.

Tommy McCarthy's impersonation of the Joe Joyce shadow boxing technique is spot on!

4-0 currently I think he could be a real prospect to watch as a cruiser assuming he maintains his dedication. Great style for the pros

Re: Ken Shamrock to fight bare knuckle "King of the Gypsies"
Over in Europe, I would say the competition is more legit than here in America.
Outside of Gunn and Batchelder, there is no one of any real merit or consequence here. It's all showbiz.
In Ireland and Britain, though, you have guys like Jaws Ward, Joe Joyce, James McCrory, etc. and alot of those guys were either regional or national amateur champions before doing the bare knuckle--- and in between time, alot of them do put on the gloves and box in the "semi-pros". Those men, I'd argue are the best of the bunch. For one, they fight rather reguarly, and second they have the pedigree, and third they keep themselves in the spotlight and actually do what they say they are going to do.
But here in America... ehhhh... when you got a former mafia guy who makes movies, and is also connected to the Feldman brothers who run Celebrity Boxing and a professional wrestling federation... you have to make yourself wonder whether alot of the "opponents" are in fact little known wrestlers, actors, stuntmen, etc.

The callout videos are better than the fights I gotta admit even as a fan of bare knuckle fighting.

I just saw this on the web:
Could be interesting but not enough to do PPV.
