A Radio interview with Dee Collier(2008)

Post by Caractacus »

check out this radio interview with the former 1986 California Heavyweight Champion Dee Collier
that was done back in September 2008 on the Spike Spillberg show in Los Angeles..
Its really interesting(and I aint lying either).
(you just have to listen to about 5 minutes of intro and music at the beginning before the interview starts)

I suspect with your quotation marks of'knock out"
you may be inferring that the fight may have been somehow fixed?
Did you listen to the radio interview?(90 minutes in length).

I believe it was fixed, yes, even though Dee was a huge man and Cobb was a coke head at the time.

If Shavers couldnt do it, and Cobb only hand a dozen fights or so... I cant imagine being more experienced, facing the likes of Norton, Dokes, Holmes, etc. that some man with a .500 type record could stop Cobb.

If its 90 minutes long I thought it might be easier for you to say what he said about the fight.

well, needless to say it was a really intersting to hear Dee Collier's story.
(here are some things that I remember about it listening to it just last week)
When Dee Collier was a teenager living in the ghetto of Chicago,
when he was a junior in High School, his mother left for California,
and told him to join the Army".
He lived with friends usually in the basement
However Five Educated Black men who were his coaches" saw something in him
and decided to help him out.
He walked 8 miles to school every day
and won a football scholarship to Indiana State University.
(All-American Linebacker)
One of his classmates there was future-hall-of-famer basketball player Larry Bird
(except Larry Bird didnt have to go to class like he had to)
Collier graduated with a degree in criminology.
so he left for California with just a suitcase in his hand.
He first tried out with the Oakland Raiders, but couldnt make the team,
however the gym he worked out also trained boxers.

and someone(a former trainer of Ken Norton and Michael Dokes) suggested that he try boxing for money.
He trained for six months before he had his first amateur fight.
He had only 6 amateur fights and won the Golden Gloves before he turned pro in 1983.
His purse for his first pro fight with Mike Evans was 200 dollars(of which his manager got 33 percent of).

also in the radio interview he says that he once trained and sparred with Mike Tyson
and appeared with Mike Tyson vs Alfonso Ratcliff,Michael Spinks vs Stephan Tangsted
HBO box-off.
Dee Collier fought Buster Douglas on the same card.(was this bout taped if not televised?)
He said he walked Douglas down almost the entire bout and had him down on one knee in the tenth
but they gave the split discion to Douglas because Douglas had a contract with Don King but he didnt.
Dee Collier also said that he was offered to fight Mike Tyson when Tyson was still coming up
around 19-0,but they only wanted to pay him 10 or 15 thousand dollars for the bought
(of which his manager would get 33 percent of.
He also refers to Don King as a "Shady Brotha"
and had to sue him twice
and one time Don King skipped town early next morning after a fight and didnt pay him

Thanks for sharing the interview, Duce - the first good thing you've done on this forum.

I'm delighted that Collier is so eloquent, and has performed in society post boxing career with outstanding merit. It is however hard what to make of his boxing tales because he so frequently blurs the facts. He willfully confuses California with the world, and his state title with a world title. The California no 2 ranked Mark Wills becomes a world no 2 ranked Mark Wills. He also considers himself a slippery stylist in the Ali mold, which will surprise anyone who watched him lumbering along, windmilling shots at Orlin Norris. I have no doubt that his version of the Buster Douglas fight bears no relation to reality. Bob Sheridan who watched the fight and calls the international feed of Douglas/Tucker makes it sound like a routine win for Douglas, which certainly fits with the scorecards and respective talents.

It baffles me why anyone would think 'Tex' Cobb took a dive. With the big money and possible glory of a Michael Spinks fight set up? Who from Camp Collier could cough up the sort of lucre to make Cobb fall over? Cobb was a physical, come-forward guy who's punch resistance had departed - bad recipe versus a monstrous guy like Collier.

It's good that he made some money, had a great ride and got out after 10 years. Unfeasibly sensible for a heavyweight. His contemporaries - Billups, Wills et al went on and on, right through the 90s, going from dangerous upset mongers to dilapidated punchbags. God only knows what condition their motor skills must be in by now.

Im assuming the the trainer that Dee Collier was referring to that got him started in boxing was
Bill Slayton?
I wonder if Collier had ever sparred with Ken Norton or Michael Dokes even while as an amateur?

That doesn't make sense does it? I have asked the question once. You on the other hand have an obsession.
