Boxers in Devon or Cornwall

The Camborne and Redruth amateur club used to produce some cracking boxers in the 90`s,not sure if that`s still the case nowadays though

Not the case ever imo and I boxed for them for a few years although my old trainer there beat Terry marsh in the amateurs

Yep, I trained there briefly when I was down at Cornwall College doing a course in 1993, and while they were a friendly bunch the quality wasn't high. Toby, was the trainer a guy called Nigel? Would have been around mid-40s then at a guess?

There may have been, rings a bell. I remember Vic Delves in the late 80's and into the 90's then I boxed at the Fitzroy Lodge when working in London for a couple years then when i went back it was Raymond Patch and Richard Bates as the head trainers. My second to last fight was a two round hammering at the hands of a lad Joe Harvey. I was gutted and heart went then a year later watching the ABA Finals I saw him there as a heavyweight finalist and realised I lost to a half decent kid but too late.

Believe it or not it was one of the few accredited places in the country where I could do my post grad in journalism with the NCTJ - was a 20-week intensive course from September-January but let's just say that living in Poole and going out in Cambourne and Redruth meant that was long enough I remember going to a place called The Twilight Zone in Redruth with a fireman's pole in it - never has a place been more aptly named
It was actually Richard Bates I was thinking of, he was a good guy. Last time I saw him was when I boxed on a dinner show in Plymouth when I was competing in the ABA Novices.... sadly a long, long time ago...

Jed "The Tiger" Syger, I use to train with him really nice fella done quite a bit of sparring, nice boxer but didn't have any strangth, he was from Torquay... He was 1st with Chrilie Mageri then join with Johnny Eames. Went to the U.S. to do a bit of training and ended up finishing of in Oz.

Its like the Bronx man, you got to be tough to survive in the mean streets of Poole. You know what I'm saying? Things go down and life is cheap in the west country.

I think you're getting Poole in Dorset confused with Pool in Cornwall fella, though I think that's in part my mistake as I wrote it incorrectly with an 'e' on the end - I'll blame it on the legacy of living in Bournemouth for a while as well

As Dookus pointed out, it sadly doesn't have any redeeming features and it was a shock to me to find out how deprived pockets of inland Cornwall are and how bleak the whole county can be out of season.

I train at St. Austell Amateur boxing club (in St. Stephens ) and there is a show on in May which will be the second show run by the club. Nice to have a local boxing club in Cornwall, don't know of any in Plymouth really which is a shame; the uni has a jeet kune do club but not a boxing one!

There are at least two in Plymouth I know of Mayflower ABC and Devonport ABC, both very long established clubs. There is also one in Torpoint just across the Ferry.

Didn't Camborne/Redruth have Mark Delves and Peter Gage boxing for them in the early 90's ?
I'm from Bristol and remember friends boxing them in the Western divisionals back in the day.

Yeah Mark was from there as his dad Vic ran the club for a while, saw him the other day as his son Piran is in the same class as my daughter at school.
