Butler Vs. Tete / Abril Vs. Mathews question
Butler Vs. Tete / Abril Vs. Mathews question
On the Mersey Boys card Tete has been brought in to defend his IBF title against Butler and Abril is coming over to defend his WBA title against Mathews.
When was the last time 2 world champions where brought over to the UK, to defend their titles against Brits, on the same bill? And I’m not talking about interim world titles or vacant world titles etc...

You just told me that on Twitter

Bloody good question. The second one here is a bit tenuous:
1996 - Winky Wright vs Ensley Bingham and Steve Collins vs Nigel Benn (technically non-Brit vs Brit)

Going even further back, to 1992, Manning Galloway v Pat Barrett plus Tyrone Booze v Derek Angol
Re: Butler Vs. Tete / Abril Vs. Mathews question
2000... Daniel Santos vs Neil Sinclair and Mauricio Martinez vs Esham Pickering.
Right, must actually do some work now...

Re: Butler Vs. Tete / Abril Vs. Mathews question
I think I have the answer. On the 6th October 2001 Barry Hearn put on a show in Manchester. On the card Columbian Jose Sanjuanelo defended his IBO Bantamweight title against Ady Lewis. On the same bill Algerian Affif Djelti defended his IBO Featherweight title against Alex Moon. It all depends if you think the IBO title is a legitimate world title or not. It's certainly more legitimate than any WBA interim title.

It wasn't the first but Imanu Mayfield and Tim Austin were brought over to fight (and beat) Terry Dunstan and Paul Lloyd respectively - that was 1995 I think.

Abril & Tete's combined purses?
I'm going to guestimate £80k
Abril is an incredibly cheap champion for a man so talented.
Eddie Hearn should be getting this guy on a retainer with the stable he has, even if Abril does beat all of them.

Think they'll be getting a lot more than that, neither's particularly expensive, but there's other promoters out there that are looking to bring a world champion in for their fighters and they'll fight who pays most.Yes We Can wrote:Abril & Tete's combined purses?

I heard he was ridiculously low paid for his trip to finlandexpe wrote:Think they'll be getting a lot more than that, neither's particularly expensive, but there's other promoters out there that are looking to bring a world champion in for their fighters and they'll fight who pays most.Yes We Can wrote:Abril & Tete's combined purses?

Re: Butler Vs. Tete / Abril Vs. Mathews question
Hearn had to pay him a non refundable deposit to come over and fight Crolla, by the time he fought Tatli he was probably desperate for any kind of fight after so long out of the ring. I can't see him getting anything less than £100k for fighting Derry, if I had to guess I'd say £150k. Tete will be less because of the division and the shortage of big fights out there for him. Between them I'd take a stab in the dark at £250k.Yes We Can wrote:I heard he was ridiculously low paid for his trip to finlandexpe wrote:Think they'll be getting a lot more than that, neither's particularly expensive, but there's other promoters out there that are looking to bring a world champion in for their fighters and they'll fight who pays most.Yes We Can wrote:Abril & Tete's combined purses?

Re: Butler Vs. Tete / Abril Vs. Mathews question
Although FW pays very well I cant see both champions getting 250k between them, Abril cant get fights coz hes not popular on US tv and has someone said flyweights historically don't get paid well, id even say Paul get as much as the champ
