Who would have been Cuba's super-heavy at Seoul 1988?

Post by Chopping Right »

Just interested to know who Lennox Lewis and Riddick Bowe would have been up against and how they might have fared had Cuba attended. I figure it would have been either Jorge Luis Gonzalez or Leonardo Martinez Fizz, Roberto Balado was still at 91kg at the time and I assume Teofilo Stevenson would have been too old.

Gonzalez, I think

I think that the Cuban Superheavyweight boxer at 1988 Seoul Olympic Games, if no Stevenson, would be Jorge Luis Gonzalez, because his performance at 1987 Indianapolis Panamerican Games.

But in 1988 the best Cuban Superheavyweight boxer has Leonardo Martinez Fizz.

I'm not sure when the upper age limit of 35 came into effect in amateur boxing, but Stevenson would have been 36 at the time of the Seoul Olympics. Given that he finished his career at the 1986 World Championships I would assume that the limit of 35 probably applied back then or he may have been tempted to continue until Seoul. The Cubans did not attend in 1988 of course but their boxers would not have been aware of that in 1986.

stevenson in 1988

The Cubans athletes are not aware of the no participation in Olympics only days or weeks before the 1984 and 1988 Games.

Stevenson last fights was in Reno 1986, at 34. But he wished that Cuba asked for a special permission so that he participated in the Seoul Games in spite of already to have fulfilled 35.

In order of this, he makes two exhibition fights in 1988. I must confirm it, but I listened that those fight were against Jorge Luis Gonzalez.

At that age, could Stevenson have possibly beaten Bowe or Lewis?

He would've been too intimidating for Bowe who was quite green at the time. It would be interesting against Lewis. However if Stevenson wouldn't be allowed to compete Leonardo Martinez Fiss would have been the cuban representative.
