Frankie Gavin going to Matchroom?

Post by chad »

Frank allegedly Tweeted this morning that he is not renewing his contract with Gavin. Soon after Eddie Hearn Tweeted Matchroom are coming to Birmingham. Sounds like Gavin has made the switch.

I don't think Gavin although a talented fighter is going anywhere on the world stage in a great division Warren has probably come to the same conclusion.

Interesting switch but i don't know what Matchroom can do that Frank hasn't done already! Frankie is a great boxer with loads of ability but I really don't see him beating the top boys at Welter, it has been said loads of times that he looks like he should be a Light Welter and I worry that his lack of desire to make this weight for big opportunities will maybe mean he won't win a world title that his talent deserves but i suppose there have been loads of talented boxers who never win a World title!!

I suppose there is a possibility of a bout against Kell if he does switch? I don't see him beating Kell but it might be his best chance.

Frankie has had a tough couple of years inside and outside the ring.

Personally , I felt there was a lot of pressure on him with the unbeaten record, this big amateur pedigree.

I think the pressures off now, he can start relaxing and we see some sparkle back.

Matchmaking is extremely important though. Slippery, negative opponents have not made for entertaining fights for him, but paired correctly he will entertain.

He's got a lot of skill and a lot of heart.

Has Frank let him go or has his contract run down? Good for Eddie as he has a few brume fighters now in Gavin, Yafai and Eggington.

Good luck to Frankie but I do fear he's going nowhere fast...had his big chance at home against Bundu and he wasn't good enough to get the job done...no shame in that by the way as Leonard is a class operator but he needed to win that. more worrying was his performance against Skeete which he could easily have lost.

Pretty much agree with all the above. Very talented boxer but will never win a world title or be in a FOTY.

Frank is generally good with people who are good with him. I suspect he may have laid his cards on the table with Frankie and suggested that an alternative route may be in both their best interests. I doubt there'll be animosity from either side.

The Bundu performance looks worse in hindsight after the way Thurman dealt with him, unfortunately Frankie is a few notches below world level.

One of the more disappointing sights in recent years is his failure to live up to the potential many thought he had.

Its obviously not too late yet, and he's not exactly at a "poor" level currently but the promise was there for a great deal more out of him.

People argue he is lazy not getting down a weight division. Don't know about that, but he clearly remains a world away from some of the names he was calling out not so long back.

Was always just an over-rated pro based on his amateur exploits. Top amateurs don't always make top pros and this is one of those cases.

He got too much smoke blown up his arse early doors by Arnie Farnell and seemed to let it all go to his head, then settled down and seemed like progress was being made when back to his old trainer, but ultimately I don't think it was anything out of the ring that did for him, he seemed to get his head down and train hard enough I just think maybe it was a lack of power and not quite the right mindset, maybe one of those naturally talented kids who underneath didn't quite want it enough.

He could still come back for more but he's struggled with certain fighters he should have been easily beating if he has world title pretentions so I struggle to see him beyond British/Euro level still.

My initial thoughts when I saw he had parted company with FW was a move to Hobson.

But with Hearn tweeting about a Birmingham show on the same day it suggests I was wrong and he will move to Matchroom. It should be a good move for Frankie, especially with his high IBF ranking....

With Gavin, G Yafai, K Yafai and Eggington it could be turned into a really good card in Birmingham. There are a few arenas that could accommodate, I just hope it is in Birmigham and not in the Civic Hall in Wolverhampyon.

I wonder if Hearn will ask the question of whether he can get down to Light Welterweight, where in my opinion he will have a better chance on the world scene.

It is times like this I feel sorry for his (now ex) promoter .....

I am guessing he signed him on a decent deal 6 years ago and got him British, Commonwealth and European title shots at home - let's not forget, Gavin does not have a particularly crossover fan friendly style or an engaging personality to attract fans / sponsors.

I wonder what deal he has signed ? - I can only imagine it will involve Kell Brook and/or Amir Khan. Other than that he will be sent over to America to get beat up by one of the top lads in a "life changing opportunity" or some shite.

Frankie could be a world champ, at the right weight, personally think he could make lightweight never mind light welter.

but he is not a welterweight

Hes Pretty tall for a Welterweight to be fair , dont know what his Body is like for losing it but maybe he just cant get down without really draining himself.

i think the problem basically is hes not a big hitter

My brother was tall for the weight and think frankie was same height when they fought if not little bit taller . and in late 20s if your trying get down to far then can seriously affect you.

If Frankie is going to have that one shot at a title with a chance, he'd be best off moving down to LW, take a few fights and see how the land lays once Danny Garcia has moved up. He's not going to get a chance at Welter unless Brook needs a short noticed opponent.

I could see him going life and death with Welters such as Kevin Bizier, Diego Chaves, Mike Alvarado and those are second tier Welters.

The only decent name around those top 15's at Welter that Gavin would possibly have a chance against would be Paulie Malignaggi. I could actually see that happening on an Matchroom under-card. That would be a nailed on 12 rounder!

Maybe I'm selling Frankie a little short but I just see Eddie using him for a few shows before packing him off for a final eliminator in the US(similar to Rose) to go and get battered.

Gavin is talented but hasn't the strength or punching power for the pros.

Look at his body - he looks like a career smack head who hasnt eaten for a week.

With a strength coach to put some muscle in maybe.

Everyone has their ideas about Frankie. Mine is that he's in the wrong weight division. He's fit enough and strong enough for the professional game, it's a matter of not doing his weight right, thinking he can't do a lower weight division when he could. He doesn't need a strength coach - certainly not as his number one priority - he needs to be given the right diet and stick to it.

I wouldn't be surprised if Hearn 'encourages' him to go with Simms and join the Essex mafia

About time, we may actually see him box in Birmingham while Eddie plays the rankings game - rather than matching him against the likes of Skeete and that Shitti guy

People go on about this great Birmingham fan base, were none of these thousands arsed enough to make the trip to his fights in Walsall and Wolverhampton? Its 15 mins up the road.

Interesting cos FW seemed to be very confident about Gavin only in January, saying he'll get a world title shot etc.

Tbf mate the walsall show ( welborn fight) was sold out a month b4 and heard he did good numbers in wolvo for bundu granted neither are massive venues. I hope he signs for matchroom cause it will bring big shows to the midlands. Matchroom bar froch dont hav a midlander who cud headline a show currently in frankie with yafai bros sam Eggington their is a start bring in aj campbell etc and the lg arena will sell out

Gavin has been a big disappointment as a pro but he lacks power so it's not really surprising. Should mean a fight with Bradley Saunders isn't too hard to make although I suppose he will be fighting an unranked Argentinian for a WBA international title first. All the bravado about levels before the Skeete fight and they looked pretty evenly matched. Perhaps Queensbury were trying to get him beat before cutting him loose?
