Coetzee and Knoetze had fought six times previously in the amateurs.each with three wins.
In October 1976 they fought as professionals in a pretty good action fight.
Coetzee's record was 13-0-0
and Knoetze's was 6-1-0(the loss was from a DQ in his previous bout)

Thanks for posting that. Rare video! Coetzee looks so skinny. I think that he beat Knoetze a few times in the amateurs too. Here is Coetzee's website:

Yeah,I remember a couple of years ago someone posting a link to Coetzee's web site.
The plaster cast of his bionic right fists got a few laughs(as what you could do with it).
He must have gotten that idea from hearing that once he became heavyweight
champion"Gentleman Jim Corbett" sold casts of his right hand as paperweights.
However those were taken from a plaster-of-paris mould
and cast with glass.
A really classy item for a collector other then just plain plaster.

Check out Coetzee's cool doo' with the pork-chop sideburns.
He must have been a fan of this popular TV show back in the early 1970's too.

I think the "bionic hand" thing is because he had a number of hand operations. He used to be a dental technician, but he got into trouble with the law there in "new" South Africa, such as it is, and they took away his license, or maybe he didn't have one, and banned him from dental technicianing, and I think fined him, something like that.

Very interesting. No, Els and Liebenberg didn't get very far in the heavyweight division, nor have I heard of any great heavies coming from SA lately. There sure used to be a steady flow of them. Kallie Knoetze's training habits, or rather lack of them, sound a lot like the late great Corrie Sanders.
So Bowe low blowed Coetzer nine times! Then he got what was coming to him when he met Golota - only they didn't award the wins to Golota!
