Kevin MItchell punch drunk?

Post by smiling assassin »

Been thinking this for a while now but last night on Ringside i thought he sounded worse than normal. Does anyone else think Kev is a bit punchy, hes been around for a long time now and has had quite a few fights. i know hes close to getting another world title shot but i just hope he doesnt do himself any long term damage and stay fighting on to long

He has always spoken like that, it's almost like nervous energy. He is usually pretty intense in interviews, don't know if he's like that away from the cameras too.

even then I think you have to be prone (if that's the right word for it) to end up slurring. There's boys had less than a quarter of fights than I had that sound proper gone. I'd like to think I'm still pretty sharp. So many boys have countless gym wars without the proper gloves. Far too many treat a spar like a fight rather than work on technique and certain things.

Yes true, that's probably the real reason and from a young age aswell probably doesn't help. What part of your career would you say that you mastered the defensive side of boxing?

i think I was very defence savvy but I also rode a shot very well. I was always 100% relaxed and confident very loose round the neck ,waist & shoulders.being tensed near doubles the impact of your opponent's shots.also I rarely sparred I didn't need too being as busy as I was.

Jesus! just looked at your record you were a busy fighter fairplay. :TU: Do you think you could have kept that up if you turned pro earlier? or did you just want the 100 fights?

I'd already had 30 odd ams & 50 unlicenced fights.before my debut I said I want 100.i really miss the regular ££ and the lifestyle but I'd already started feeling, well just physically knackered by about 90. It was pretty non stop for a few years

He really is no different than usual. He simply isnt bright or articulate enough for television or punditry.

He's a little bit like a rabbit in the headlights in the tv studio. Decent boxer though.

Yeah you could be right he seems to stumble with his words and make his speech come out a bit punchy. i like him though always comes across well, saw him in at lakeside a few years ago and he was more than happy to stop and have a photo with me. It must just be me then just thought he sounded worse than normal

Yup, so many boys seem to think that they have to win a spar-and too many so called trainers let it happen imo. The other thing that people forget is that these top fighters have usually been top amateurs which means they have been making weight and in hard fights since they were nippers.

Go to any school boy champs weigh in and you will see 12 year olds skipping in plastic bags to make weight. Put that onto the next 20 years and you get an idea of the damage these boys brains can get.

There are lots of individual difference and I hope it gets some good research in the future. I know there is an apparent potential genetic predisposition to the likelihood of Pugilstica dementia.... but general "punchiness" I am not so sure about.

When you hear the likes of Graham Earl speaking and compare to people like George Foreman (okay many of his fights ended early, but he had many many more fights and a lot of his later fights did go long and he ate a lot of punchers), Jim Watt (hard career) and Sugar Ray Leonard you think why?

I know it was parodied on Youtube hilariously a few years ago, but James DeGale speech and articulation genuinely concerns me

DeGale's diction is genuinely alarming. But then like you say, Foreman and Holmes went longer than all of their contemporaries and are totally coherent. Then consider a heavy like David Izon, came out went, a few big, tough fights and he's near disabled.

To look at retired boxers in general it seems the great majority have the predisposition to brain and motor deterioration, no matter how great or tough. Foreman, Holmes, Chuvalo et al seem to be, in the nicest way, freaks.

That is true.

Also, I believe that the cumulative effect from sparring and boxing combined is a big factor - a pro might only have 10 pro fights but they could have sparred thousands of rounds since they were kids.

It depends on the type of sparring, was this body sparring, moving around or full-on open sparring.

Ironically, as Johnny said above - even though he has had loads of pro fights, he as possibly actually not done as many rounds (sparring and fighting combined) as other boxers because he had no need to spar.

He could box a 6 rounder every month, and some lads are sparring 6 rounds most days !

I used to train at Earlsfield ABC. There were three of four boys, teenagers, who seemed to be considered the star pupils. They were sparring each other mon weds fri evening and sun morning just for good measure. Always looked to me like they were eating punches rather than developing a particular part of their arsenal. One of them always seemed to step out the ring with his face a grim patchwork of welts. Made me inwardly cringe.

I think that might just be because DeGale can't talk properly, not because he's been hit round the head too many times.

Foreman and Holmes both had long breaks though. That must have helped a lot.

The weirdest one is Jake Lamotta. Here we have a genuine freak of nature!

You want to talk freaks of nature, look at George Chuvalo here at 73 years of age:

You think of Ali and Terrell, of Quarry and Ellis, of Mathis, Frazier, Patterson, Folley, Bonavena and the Big Cat, and here's their opponent George Chuvalo in 2010, lucid and witty, strong and solid, still making noise!

This man must have some strain of neanderthal in his blood.
